An advert that was ruled inappropriate and banned from a city's buses has appeared on a billboard.

The air conditioning advert - described by an academic as "plain sexist" - features the line: "Your wife is hot!"

It was meant to appear on seven buses in Nottingham but Adverta, which places adverts on buses and trams in the city, blocked it and said it could cause offence.

Lee Davies, who designed the ad, said it was "a little bit of harmless fun".

Professor Carrie Paechter, director of the Nottingham Centre for Children, Young People and Families, said the advert was "like something out of the 1950s" and called for it to be removed.

"If I had young children, I wouldn't want them passing that on the way to school, because of the messages it gives them about society," she said.

"The subliminal message about society is that it's OK to comment on women's bodies, and comment on women's bodies as if they are the possession of someone else - 'your wife'.

"It also gives the subliminal message that it's the man of the house that's responsible for getting the air conditioning fixed."

A new rule came into force last month prohibiting harmful gender stereotypes in adverts, following a review of gender stereotyping by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Prof Paechter added: "I don't want to demonise the company or the company's owner but it is a foolish advert and it needs to come down."

Political correctness is going to far. Its a bit odd. But to call it sexist and give subliminal messages is a bit silly given the fact that the milk tray thing is still a thing there was a campaign to find the milk tray man even. Yet women wouldn't say that was sexist

Why aren't we allowed to all just fancy each other anymore without it being totally inappropriate and insensitive

Guaranteed this will be discussed on loose women later and they will all bitch about how disgraceful it is and then they will say something like join us after the break where we perve on Chris Hemsworth in his boxers or something like that

Oh yes always the way to shut people down the old "you're ugly lol", grow up Oliver

*Not that I think this ad is sexist by the way, just that overly used come back is so stupid and childish

I think it does play into a few unhelpful stereotypes to be honest. Not really in terms of objectification, I don't really see it as promoting "partners as possessions" (who doesn't say "your wife / husband / child"?) but...

1) It plays into the idea that home maintenance is "men's territory", or that men are likely to be the "money holder" who can arrange for it to be fixed. Your wife is cold so YOU better fix it. Poor lady is stuck cold until you take your hand off the purse strings?

2) It plays into the "happy wife happy life" rhetoric that is just really unhealthy. "If your wife isn't happy she'll make your life a misery until you sort out whatever the problem is she wants solved".

tbh most adverts are either hideous stereotypes or (like the ad last night i saw with 3 mixed race couples in out of 4) hideous attempts to VS for likes

they are all bad

I think it’s harmless.
I think we are turning into a bit of a joyless society that takes everything so seriously.
Men and women find each other hot.So now we can’t even say that publicly anymore?
I think we all need to chill out a bit.

To be fair I'm actually far too hot and I wish my wife would sort us out some air conditioning :fist:.

We did buy a hilarious fan though. Our bedroom one broke and it's been insufferably hot / humid so I was like "Let's get a rly good fan" so I bought a big floor fan. That arrived in a box that says "industrial floor fan".

It has three settings.

- Really high
- Far too high
- Actual tornado in your bedroom

:joker:. On the lowest setting it is awesome at keeping the room cool to be fair. Just... y'know... you can't have any loose paper lying around or anything.

It's not about her being hot NM, it's about her being able to sort out the air conditioning herself if it's broken :fist:. It's 2019 and honestly jokes aside I do think it's time to let go of the idea that "blokes are in charge of house maintenance and budget".

It's not very warm here at all. We missed the heat wave when we were on holidays (and there was actual air con in Italy)

it would have worked fine, if there was a corresponding

you're husbands hot billboard..... that said I think advertisers do this on purpose as it creates a lot more attention than if they had gone down the non stereotypical route

it looks like the billboard is for a company which sends someone to fix aircon units, it's not encouraging husbands to fix it themselves. The person who comes could be male or female.
