Ahead of a new Channel 4 documentary, emotional TV host Davina McCall recalls her horror when she witnessed the Big Brother racism row involving Jade Goody – and how she knew the reality TV star’s life was “ruined forever” even before she left the show

Watching this just brought back so much nostalgia and just reminds me how much I miss watching BB. There were some parts I did find a bit difficult to watch, it looked like Jade had a very harsh upbringing and some of the stories were sad to listen to. The next episodes will be even tougher to watch.
Do we know who has the rights to the clips of old BB footage now btw? I was sure it was in C5’s hands for a bit but I wonder how they produced this

Same here Annie. It was literally an all-encompassing "experience" shared with friends and family, not just this nightly show. A phenomenon.
I remember once in school my form tutor was like 40 mins late and after making her excuses to fellow staff, she told us all "in confidence" that the real reason she was late was because she was watching some random garden/pool conversation on BB Live until about 4:30am, nothing special but she just couldn't turn it off, gripped. :joker:
Enjoyed the show, really reminded me just how awful the press were to her during her stint in the house. The fact that Kevin idiot was just laughing about it all made me uneasy but it's expected from him really.

What an excellent episode. Next week's episode centring around the race row will be a hard watch to see again. I love and have missed Davina's passion for the show and the housemates. It was such a different world back, the press were vile about Jade. I wasn't expecting to see so much BB3 footage but I loved it. Very nostalgic and weird seeing Big Brother on Channel 4 again. Could BB make a one off return for its 20th anniversary maybe if this was a success? (that's probably wishful thinking though :bawling: )

I do believe there was a 30 minute tribute programme on the night of the UBB final though. I seem to remember Channel 4’s ‘Farewell Big Brother’ night went on from, like, 8pm-midnight and had all sorts mixed in like the the results, the Jade tribute, all sorts.
Liam-

Such a compelling, eye-opening documentary which touched on real issues very honestly and unapologetically. I was only 7 when BB3 aired and I didn't even know about Big Brother until BB5, so essentially I grew up knowing and accepting Jade as a celebrity; perhaps even took it for granted without paying attention to how truly remarkable her life trajectory really was.
It was refreshing to get some exclusive new info such as anecdotes from PJ and Alex regarding their time in the BB house with Jade. Also nice to see Davina and Ruth have a part in the documentary.
Overall it was very dramatic but truly gripping. Can't believe we have to wait a week for the next installment which I assume will touch on her other Reality TV shows and culminating in her CBB stint.

Yeah all the programs were mixed in, I just remember on the TV guide they were all listed as individual programs (like children in need is, where each segment has its own part of the show but it still cuts back to the studio between each)

I didn’t watch the documentary, my opinion of jade has not changed, she was a racist bully as her second time on celebrity bb clearly showed.
I have said on here in the past how channel four realised she had become a hate figure and edited bb to show her in the best possible way, Grahame Norton was channel fours highest paid star at the time and went from calling her the pig to being her biggest fan!, I wonder why!.
We had her cancer fight rammed down our throats, she was not the only woman to die from cancer who had kids, but you would think her cancer was the only one, women are still dying of cancer
The only money jade ever gave to charity was 700 of someone else’s money.
Now it’s clear from the posts in this thread, my opinion will be met with disgust but I live in the real world not the edited version.

I didn't like her at first sheriff, but did come to like her in the end,but you are right,if anyone else said what she did in the race row,she would have been slaughtered especially on here, I suppose it depends who you are on whether you are deemed racist or not.
...I would imagine she was ‘slaughtered’ on this site as well as any other site for her actions toward Shilpa Shetty...she was part of a pack that was probably the most unpleasant thing ever seen on BB...it has nothing to do with who we might ‘deem to be racist’ ...her actions were undoubtedly racist ...that was a few weeks of her life though...if any of us had our life judged on a few weeks and on something we felt represented ‘the worst of us’...because we all do have ‘worst’ which is a part of us as well...this programme, these episodes...represent so much more than that one time...they create a balance of a complex person...and the ‘best of her’...when it became the most sad part of her young life...?...has helped so many young girls in awareness of cervical cancer...people who had never in their lives had a smear test were coming forward and saying...’..because Jade...’...

She wasnt racist though was she? She was ignorant and some would say she paid the ultimate price while the others who were actually racist and full on nasty have respected any sort of backlash, have refused to acknowledge their parts and have had a great life afterwards

What are you talking about?
The majority of viewers and this forum were and still are against Jade because of her treatment towards Shilpa. You say that like she came out of it all unscathed and her behaviour was overlooked when she bore the brunt of the scandal, despite being the least racist of everyone involved.

This was a really good watch. It was surreal seeing the audition tapes and how creative, outlandish and desperate people were to be on the show. It's really quite sad what once was a phenomenon turned into such meaningless rubbish by the end of its stint.
Jade's story is crazy but so fascinating. I can't imagine what it was like for her growing up. Most people would be deeply effected and wounded by the trauma, but she seemed to be the kind of person that took things in her stride no matter what- even if she was quite petulant and vulnerable. The interesting thing is that the vulnerability really did fade away once she left the house. It's crazy how much of a mogul she became in her own right. A concotion of chav culture and good timing re Big Brother (at its prime) really helped a lot of the BB3 housemates actually.
Really intrigued by next week's episode. This is the one I've been waiting to see. Will be strange to relive the race row again and hear how people perceived it (especially Davina, who I loved seeing again!) in their own words.
Was also cool to see a few of the BB3 housemates, especially Alex. What he said about he rock being thrown into garden really shocked me. Watching the clips from BB3 in high definition (or as close to HD) we could get, reaaaaalllly makes me wish that C4 would release all series on DVD or upload them onto ALL4.

...they showed so many VTs that were based on nudity...like being fine about appearing nude on TV was going to make for an interesting personality over weeks of more or less 24 hours coverage......it must have been so difficult to be THAT person or that group of people who decided which would be chosen...to know whether that person could sustain in entertainment value...
...it was really nostalgic to see so many elements in looking back..the live feed for instance, being some of ‘the best’ of BB...the next two episodes though are going to be extremely difficult...
She can be slaughtered for one incident, whilst still celebrated for other things. Its not either or and one thing in her life does not define her tbh, like all of us.

Watching all those paparazzi when Jade was in that car. I don’t think I could ever hack that sort or fame. It kinda doesn’t surprise me that people like George (BB7) decided to walk because of this. I remember watching the episode all those years ago when he did walk and I thought ‘how could you do that?’ But watching that, now I’m alot older I understand why.

I get way more upset if my mum is treated badly than if I am.
...I think it’s also that the media looked down on her and her mum so much, they were awful to them...so she would have wanted the public and media to get to know her mum and get to fall a bit in love with her...?...which didn’t happen...and also she would have wanted her mum to have found the eviction experience as special as she could...with the opportunity to look her finest...

Jade’s problem with Shilpa was never her race, it was the fact that she thought that Shilpa looked down on her and thought she was better than everyone else and should be treated that way, unfortunately she just wasn’t intelligent enough to articulate it properly imo.

I do wonder whether Jade thought the public wouldn't understand Shilpa the same way she didn't, but backfired horrifically.
There's no excuse for the abhorrent bullying, and the comments were racist whether the intention was for them to be or not. However, I do hope this documentary can put the entire thing at rest because the entire ordeal must be such a misery for everyone to go through again. As fascinating it was, there's just no need to relive it again. It's interesting that the press were the bullies that got away with it, but in a way social media has taken that badge from them. Even the comments from people online about this show are really disgusting.
I really do hope for peace for Jackyie, in particular. She's too vulnerable to be put in these positions and have to relive the trauma again and again.
