You've got to be kidding!

I honestly think that Paedophiles shouldn't be let out of Prison as you can't rehabilitate them like other types of criminals, and I certainly wouldn't be having them work with children, what kind of moron does that?

It seems like the issue here is that the library in question failed to carry out background checks... Not that it's being "allowed". Negligence from the organisers, not indicative of any widespread change in policy regarding sex offenders.

So negligence for the library to not provide background checks.

In all fairness to myself ..I did point this loophole out when the British news story cane out...and we all know how great we are at checking people.

Oh god, it gets worse

Library board can’t agree on sex crime checks proposed after drag queen story event
(https://www-1.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article234193237.html)
A proposal to background-check people for past sex offenses before they are allowed to make presentations at Wichita libraries was put on hold Tuesday, after a split in the board between those who want a complete ban on sex offenders and those who want staff to have some leeway.

The policy originated in a backlash against a drag queen story time almost a year ago at the Advanced Learning Library and has been criticized by the leader of the LGBT-rights group Equality Kansas.

It was apparent from the comments at Tuesday’s meeting that there is strong consensus on the library board that prospective program presenters should be screened through a national web site listing sex offenders.

But that consensus broke down over the issue of how much discretion the staff should have in allowing past sex offenders to participate in library presentations.

Board members were split between those who said registered sex offenders should be automatically disqualified from ever giving a talk at the library, and those who said it should be allowable in some circumstances.

In what circumstances is it ever allowable for child sex offenders to be allowed near children?

Anyone in that board who was wavering should be immediately removed from their position.

...isn’t this the reason why this is being discussed atm by the library board ...

‘But board member Jonathan Winkler argued that standards for inclusion in the offender registry vary from state to state and that a zero tolerance policy could wrongly ban an ordinary gay person for consensual same-sex conduct that was once illegal but no longer is.’

...surely this could have people on a sex offenders list because of their sexuality and no other reason..?...

There's a difference between someone who was convicted for being in a relationship with another consenting adult man several decades ago, and being convicted for raping a child.

The two shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath, there should absolutely be a zero tolerance approach.

...absolutely there is a difference and no one is suggesting anything other than zero tolerance ...which is exactly why this is being discussed by the board as to the implementation so that no one is banned from being a guest at the library because of their sexuality...thank you Oliver for pointing out that the checks must be looked at very carefully indeed...
