I couldn't see a thread about this

but a teaser for this came on when i was re-watching IT Chapter Two. Red balloons were floating around the DC logo then comes up Hayley popping a balloon saying she's so over clowns.

That's what i thought it was going to be about when i saw the DC logo because that's coming up soon and i have not seen any trailers at the cinema for it. I saw that bloody brad pitt going to space trailer two months ago and still seeing it now but no joker:laugh:

I didn't even know that Harley was getting her own film :skull:

Four years after the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.

I'll watch but the title is tragic

Hm, seems okay. In the current comics Harley is in a relationship with Poison Ivy.

I'd prefer a movie about the Birds of Prey comics from just over ten years ago, by Gail Simone.

It has Barbara Gordon, who was formerly Batgirl, as a master hacker. She's in charge of small group of all-female heroes, mostly Huntress and Black Canary, but others join. She sends them on missions, and does things like hacking electric doors from her base so they can go through. She's such a good hacker even Batman asks for her help sometimes.

btw Cassandra Cain becomes Batgirl in the comics.

Is that as "Oracle"? I don't follow the comics but Barbara is in Batman: Arkham Knight as Oracle, after being paralyzed by Joker (pre-game). I think there's a prequel DLC where you play as her as Batgirl though I've never played it.

Yeah, Oracle.

Babs was shot by the Joker - he didn't know she was Batgirl, but he wanted to torture Commissioner Gordon (her dad) with pictures of her injured and naked when he had no way of getting to her.

Yeah, that was the main criticism I had of the trailer. I'll be so disappointed if he's not wearing that mask at all throughout the film.

Not a bad trailer but they should have just called it Harley Quinn because Black Canary and the Huntress are basically invisible so far.

I find Harley a bit boring tbh. I wish they'd dial her back a bit in the comics, she works better as the two dimensional weirdo that she is meant to be rather than a complex anti-hero. Her and Poison Ivy together is just silly.

But yeah i wish this was an actual Birds Of Prey adaption.

Harley and Poison Ivy's relationship is one of the best parts of Harley's character and Harley has never really been a two dimensional character. Have you ever read Mad Love? A large part of her character has always been about trauma and a commentary on toxic relationships and her relationship with Ivy is important because it shows growth for both characters.

Poison Ivy's a great match for Harley because it's a relationship that deepens both characters further, Harley isn't stuck in a cycle of abuse when she's with Ivy and you get to see more of what makes Ivy tick when they're together since she's not just a murderous seductress with a somewhat relateable goal.

It would be a true disservice to the character of Harley if they ever made her a two dimensional character because that's not who she is.

They should have just done a Gotham City Sirens film tbh, it's dumb that they turned the Birds of Prey into Harley's sidekicks when they could have hit hte jackpot with a film that brings Harley together with Ivy and Catwoman. The amount of speculation and coverage over such a film would be insane, especially since the media often speculates about who would play those two characters although they aren't attached to a film yet.

Sirens would be great, it's more in line with the version of Harley they want to portray, and it doesn't push a great team from the comics into the background.

This film essentially means we probably won't get a "proper" screen version of the Birds of Prey, which is a shame. If we were to get one, I'd say grab Gail Simone for the writing duties. Her BoP and Batgirl are my favourite iterations of each. And sure, keep the current Black Canary and Huntress.

Has Margot Robbie's line delivery improved? I found her quite wooden in Suicide Squad.

Welp at least he actually has the mask! Was worried.

I still think her accent is bad though and you can keep hearing the Aussie throughout in parts. HQ should have a really, really thick Brooklyn/NYC accent.

Does look very fun though! Going to see it.

Without spoilers, did the other Birds of Prey ladies get a lot of screen time? I know Harley is the main focus but I do hope the others weren't just in the background a lot.

And how was Black Mask?

Tony Montana
09-02-2020, 12:29 PM
I saw it last night and really enjoyed it, it was kinda slow at first but it quickly picked up and it culminated in an epic ending. Margot killed it again as Harley - she really was made for this role, Ewan was a great villain - although I would've preferred him to be more menacing tho and less jokey but overall he was still a great villain, Black Canary and Huntress were pretty badass characters and both shone, although I wish the latter had more screen time. The action was cool and so was the humor.

I'd give it an 8/10. I can't believe i'm saying this but I think it's my new favourite DCEU film.

Tom4784
09-02-2020, 06:58 PM
I thought it was really good, it wasn't perfect though. The pacing is all over the place and the film is mostly set-up for the end but it was entertaining throughout and Margot's probably the best live action Harley Quinn we'll get.

It's a shame that the actual Birds of Prey are sidelined so much though, this is really a Harley film with the BOP serving as extended cameos tbh.

I went to see this today and I really enjoyed it. It had its comedic moments like I was expecting but they didn’t feel forced or like they were constantly trying to fit as many as they could into it so I’m happy with that and I thought the action scenes were very good!

Tom4784

Jurnee deserves better, she makes an excellent Black Canary but I imagine those characters (and their actresses lacking star power) will be blamed and then dropped from the DCEU altogether.

I imagine Gotham City Sirens will be rushed into development and Margot will probably have her hand forced in casting more recognisable talent as Poison Ivy.

Then again, the film could rally with good word of mouth like The Greatest Showman did (Odd comparison, I know, but they both had underwhelming starts while the latter managed to rally with an legendary hold on the box office).

The R rating in America really hurt their numbers though, the film really didn't need to be R.

Should never have been Rated R. There was no real need for it having watched it and it hasn’t helped the numbers at all. I feel for the girls, because the movie was fun tbh.

DC and Warner Bros are going to be desperate for Pattinson Batman to be a hit.

The hashtag for it on Twitter is a cesspool of them preaching that the film is pushing a “woke” agenda and saying it’s a crap film when they haven’t even seen it, half of them are basing their opinions on the trailers and passing off their opinions as facts.

Oliver_W
17-02-2020, 11:46 PM
To be fair the marketing and promotional interviews made the film look like it was aimed at the "woke" crowd, even though the film itself was actually fine. Making it look like a "girl movie", when most of the audience was actually male (https://medium.com/better-marketing/5-marketing-mistakes-of-harley-quinn-birds-of-prey-25c39afc6128) probably didn't help either.

But yeah, it was okay, I'd like it more if it was about the actual Birds of Prey from the comics, and didn't include Harley :joker:

Incels that hate women and anything to do with women because they blame the world for no one wanting to **** 'em, easier to blame women for not finding them attractive then to consider that they themselves might be the issue.

It always comes down to the same thing, childish men thinking they are entitled to sex and being mad at the world for being entirely un****able.

But Dezzy weren't people hating on The Joker for being too misonginistic ? . Despite the box office success.

I form no opinion on either as I haven't seen The joker & I haven't seen Birds of prey .

But people seem to forget these are just movies not to be taken seriously.

I know some push a political agenda which can be annoying , but also these things can be based around certain characters and their stories .

I don't think it's fair to say its failure is down to incels. Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, The Hustle, Dark Phoenix, and that Rebel Wilson romcom were all successful and/or well liked.

Sometimes it really does come down to marketing. Most of the publicity for the film made it clear it was a feminist movie, and sometimes this publicity teetered over the "teehee, not for you, boys!"

Plus, a completely shallow point... These are the comics Birds of Prey:

I think the main reason for the box-office under-performance is that Suicide Squad didn't live up to expectations of the marketing, for many. So they didn't bother with this.

That and the 'R'/'15' rating.

Oops you're right xD well I guess that's another example of bad publicity sinking something - that widely circulated clip of Mystique bitching at Professor X turned a lot of people off.Dark Phoenix flopping wasn't down to bad marketing, it was down to it being not very good... And essentially, the entire X-men reboot cycle not being very good. First Class is an OK film, and Future Past has a couple of standout scenes but overall is a mess. Apocalypse is dumb and Dark Phoenix is just... Not even entertaining.

Logan is good but it's more like "Joker" - not fully attached to the franchise, more of an alternate timeline take.

In this case I can't fully comment as I haven't seen Birds of Prey, but I've seen a lot of comparisons to Suicide Squad and IMO, Suicide Squad is just not a good movie. In terms of narrative and editing, it's an absolute mess. Justice League was the same, and the cinematic cut of BvS (though I still like the directors cut).

I get the same vibes from the trailer for this. I'll still watch it on home release though and give it the benefit of the doubt.
