https://blog.us.playstation.com/2019/10/08/an-update-on-next-gen-playstation-5-launches-holiday-2020/

Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.

These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in a story that posted this morning.

The “more” refers to something I’m quite excited about – a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller. First, we’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.

While there’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I’d like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games.

Nice! I'm glad they doing a slower reveal this time, rather than doing a big thing

I expected a November release, if it's released closer to Christmas than that it'll be carnage trying to get one.

Unless there's some insane launch titles, I'll hold off until January/February before getting one. The most surprising thing about that announcement is that Tsushima is still coming to the PS4, given the radio silence around it I assumed they were updating it for a PS5 release instead.

From what I hear, a lot of games toward the end are going to be forward compatible, so the PS5 wont suffer from a lack of games to play, and most PS4 games will be backwards compatible too.

Yep, I'll get it as soon as an exclusive that I really want drops... which is usually at least a year into a console's lifespan. I'm overhauling my PC next April so it'll be fine for anything that isn't PS-exclusive for years.

I'm surprised it can do PS3... I wonder if they're incorporating the chip? Or if it'll be cloud-based? There's no way it's emulating PS3.

Still says "reportedly". Plenty of time to turn around and say "sorry, we tried, but it just wasn't feasible".

That and the developers screaming about how they can't do remasters of PS3 games anymore for easy money will probably put the kibosh on it.

To be honest though isn't PS3 backwards compatibility sort of moot? Pretty much every decent PS3 game got a PS4 remaster so 1, 2 and 4 compatibility is fine

I'm mainly hyped (in terms of backwards compatibility) that I'll finally get to play SSX Tricky without the horror of trying to get my PS2 working properly on a modern TV.

Word is it's less powerful than the Xbox, but I feel we've kinda reached the point where that's not really an issue anymore, Sony has a much bigger library of exclusives.

I hope it is fake bc it looks gimmicky

I always forget that the big square button on the dualshock 4 is touch sensitive and it’s so pointless bc the only game (afaik) that implemented that feature is uncharted and all they did was make it so swiping it left/right turned the pages of a book :skull: like sweetie how pointless

I dont mind the one on the PS4 controller, since it can function at up to four extra buttons

It opens the map/menus for swiping in different directions in Days Gone and I hit it by accident CONSTANTLY, to the point where it was completely unplayable until I stuck a cut out piece of an old credit card over the touch pad :fist:. You could access all the same menus by pressing it and then scrolling through them with L1/R1 like any other game! Pointless gimmick.
