A "complex and difficult" operation is under way to rescue a man trapped 270 feet up a chimney.
Police, fire and ambulance services are all at the scene, with a helicopter hovering near the top of Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle, Cumbria.

Footage from the scene appears to show a figure, upside down with his legs in the air, at the top of the chimney.
Roads around the structure, built in 1836 and a prominent local landmark, have been closed.

Local reports said shouts and wailing could be heard coming from the chimney in the early hours of this morning before police arrived on the scene.
The man is believed to have become stuck in the chimney at around 2.20am.

Scott Mattinson, 24, and his fiancée Nadene, 25, live nearby.
Scott told the News & Star: "We heard a noise at about 10.30pm last night - some sort of wailing; like something in distress.

The pictures on our local news showed him dangling outside the chimney.
Poor fella.

You can only hang upside down for so long before you die. Blood pools in the head for one (can cause brain haemorrhage), and for another, the heart isn't designed to pump blood that way round the body so blood pressure rises and the heart can simply fail. Like it's totally safe to be upside down for a few minutes, probably even a few hours, but 12 hours + and things can start to get bad.

I read a story a whole back about a caver who got stuck upside down and eventually died. They managed to get people in beneath him and could talk to him, he was talking at first, eventually passed out, and had died before they managed to free him.
