View Full Version : Fireworks must be banned for the sake of animals

My dog is unbearable so scared and constantly panting and shaking.
I read that a dog had a heart attack a few days back due to fireworks and its unacceptable and immoral that people care more about setting the fireworks off then the health and safety of animals.
It's time to ban them once and for all and protect animals

AGREE I can't stand them. I've just spent the past couple of hours worrying because my cat hadn't come home, he's in now thankfully.

Can you put loud music on?
It does get over bearing.

Agreed!
They literally serve no purpose whatsoever, if people want to see them then they should only be allowed at organised events, they shouldn’t be sold to consumers in shops at all, thankfully my dogs aren’t scared of them, but my cats are horrified

I've read about two cases of dogs having heart attacks caused by them this year.
I don't see the need for any at all but the first step would be to ban them from sale to the public, at least with organised ones you know when they're happening so you ca somewhat prepare - but even then I wouldn't say it's worth the pay off
Not to mention the air pollution and danger to humans as well!

invent some poochy earplugs or something, you'd be a millionaire.

They’re such an annoyance I don’t get the appeal in spending £50 on some loud bangs and colours?
There’s firework carcasses all over my back garden, everything outside stinks of smoke from the bonfires. It’s bull**** tbh. Luckily my pets aren’t bothered by them but I know they can be awful for other animals

One mustn't forget the next generation though adam, they must be entertained at all costs...
Every family must explode 50 quids worth from the back garden of every house that has children...the next generation must be entertained though...
Pushy mothers... (on a par with the American child pageant mothers, if you ask me)
And dads going..."I've ****ing paid for them so they are going up, ok?"

Fireworks have been set off for the past 400 years, but it must be that damn new generation
I think there should be much stricter laws on fireworks, people forget that they are literally explosives.

They absolutely need to be banned. I mean people don't even stick to the time rules either. Someone was setting them off at quarter past 11 last night! Along with all the fear it brings to pets, it also brings fear to people with sensitive ears, my daughter was really scared last night as we had to go somewhere(not bonfire related) and lots were going off as we were walking down the street she was holding her ears and screaming because of her sensitive hearing
Also yes pets get scared but let's think of all the wild animals out there that also must be scared and they don't have owners to comfort them
So yes absolutely ban them. Public displays only!

Only place you would see them when I was a kid was at a bonfire display...they certainly didn't go on for ten days running.

hmmm, i don't know for me personally about this one, i like watching fireworks from my bedroom
although my mom hates them since our dog also gets very stressed, shaky (and she has already gone through a lot, been in a rescue shelter in La Linea, spain, before that possibly lived on Streets too we even don't know her exact age)
for the sake of animals, yes but i do myself enjoy watching fireworks (the arrows then i mean, put a ban on the more louder firework bombs)
i like fireworks, i'm never going to suggest they be banned when we have entire countries at war.

The bonfires need to stop, and firework displays are lovely if there was a way to do them with no bang ones?
Even at organised displays it has to be fairly near residential areas or nobody would go.

We've had quiet fireworks before. As well as pets, where I live there are lots of horses, pigs, sheep etc... They still make a noise but it's a "pfffft!"rather than a bang!
We just googled "quiet fireworks".

the ''Bang'' fireworks, are called firework bombs
few people in same street as us bought those few years back, very annoying too but we normally put the sound of our tv a lot up than usual
i also keep thinking to myself, if you can buy that lot of fireworks, then there is no economical crisis :idc:
also one guy who lived at corner of our street and another, had put his car in his garage, scared of people throwing fireworks against it probably :fan:
but the more colourful fireworks, are also the more ''quiet'' ones, those are just the standard arrows

By default I think they should be organised displays only but, even then, some of the booms at the display we went to last night were insane... there were one or two that made my jacket visibly "blast back" a bit :umm2:. Plus, the ones that got the biggest "oooooh"s weren't even the big bangs, they were the ones that go with a little "pop" then spread out over a massive area, then sort of "fizzle" brightly as they fall. The ones with the loudest sounds weren't actually all that impressive visually...
Can I suggest banning make up as well...that stuff kills animals
Niamh.

Not really much of a problem where I live but we do have regular army training drills as there are 2 forts nearby so sometimes there's lots of gunshots, doesn't really bother the dog and cat much though

Some parts of Italy ban certain fireworks or use silent only

It scares my cats so much, I think dogs are affected worse though, it's so hard to help them relax when they're so terrified.

I just see on Twitter that a guide dog was rooted to the spot in fear because of fireworks.
I agree they should be banned. Unnecessary things tbh

So what you're saying is the generation that raised you didn't set off as many fireworks as your generation has done?

My dogs growing up were a nightmare. I used to lock them in my room with me, black out the windows and have my music on loud. They were absolutely petrified. My cat today barely notices them. He may lift his head off a cushion if there is a particularly loud bang, but he soon rests it back down again.
I sympathise with the op, but fireworks are such a part of our history/tradition in this country, that it's unrealistic to suggest they should be banned. We just have to take better care of our pets for a few nights each year, which shouldn't be that much of a chore.

Fireworks should only be used at sanctioned public events really. It's so annoying to be constantly bothered by loud and underwhelming fireworks when every area could just have one event and that's it.
There's more and more calls for private firework use to be banned every year so hopefully it'll lead into action at some point.

I just don’t get the appeal of standing in the garden watching a few fireworks

It's more my generation didn't set off as many, but this new generation of parents do....all my kids needed was a packet of sparklers....not 50 quids worth from the local garden centre or pop up shop.

I dont understand the obsession for spending that much when it would he cheaper to head to a proper event and see a better display
Those flamin booming mortar bombs are just despicable and completely unnecessary imho

My Cat gets scared when the Fireworks go off.
For me personally though I'm not that bothered about Fireworks either way, I just don't like seeing my Cat be frightened.

Or stay indoors and watch it out the ****ing window if you live close to it. :fist:

To be fair, none of my pets have ever been arsed about fireworks . As a teen I took our little dog out for a walk on fireworks night and some old feller was giving me abuse about how scared she would be, but she was having a great ol' time :joker:. She did go totally deaf in her old age though, so maybe she was always half deaf?

Really? Bonfire Night and fireworks in general don't seem anywhere near as ubiquitous as they were 15-20 years ago.
I remember around late 90s there was no escaping the noises all evening/night long for days around bonfire night. Whereas nowadays, apart from a few, a majority either don't bother or just attend the organised displays.
Maybe it's just this area.

When Parmy grew up, "fireworks" meant making molotovs in a Glasgow high-rise.

When I grew up we built our own bonfires on the nearest patch of grass..as kids we went round houses knocking on doors asking for stuff for the bonfire after school.
Everyone knew it was ok cause on the night it was organised and not to big...but it had to be bigger than croft roads down the hill....
So yeah, as a 12-13yr old in 1983..That's what we did.
We spent night after night doing that...all congregating as kids round the bonfire each night as it grew bigger and bigger...who needed play parks that month..the memories of clambering about on the build as it grew, spending night after night for a month competing with the kids down the hill..
Good memories, spoiled by some wide **** deciding to make some cash out this celebration and making it all about snap crackle and ****ing pop.
Admittedly in hindsight it was maybe ruined and stopped by people lighting the opponents fires before the 5th...but that's another story.

Take the piss all you want..
Maybe it was earlier but I had my own seat up the top of the bonfire, so I could look out for the croft road lot and any potential sabotage.
We didn't need plastic witches masks in the shop to entice us to celebrate... all our parents needed was a basin full of water and enough apples for all the kids in attendence.

No.
its nice to have some audible feedback, but by now, they should know what sounds, frequencies and decibel levels freak animals out the most and avoid them. There certainly isn't any need for sonic boom level bangs like some of them are close to.
Ages ago, they downgraded things like bangers so they didn't blow your hand off if you were holding one when it went off, but the whole sector seemed to become deregulated and the floodgates opened with some serious **** on the market. We need to return to tight regulation and standards
