Leona >She can hit all the notes but she's missing the richness Karen has in her voice and the depth. Was listening to Tracy Chapman earlier as well love her voice too, I think I'm more of a fan of deeper, lower singing voices in both Male and female singers. They have more character for me

Rumour reminded me of a mix of Karen Carpenter and Dusty Springfield.
I have to say, Karen Carpenter's voice was exquisite, like cut class.

...Karen Carpenter.....she would definitely be in my top 5 female vocalists...hmmmm, Karen, Aretha, Barbra...and maybe Annie Lennox..I’ll have to think for my 5th one...(..and they’re in no particular order etc..)..

I have to say, Karen Carpenter's voice was exquisite, like cut class. There was just something really special about Karen's voice, I cant even put my finger on exactly what it is. Cut glass is a good description though.

There’s just something about female vocalists of the 60’s/70’s and earlier that was so classy and “perfect” voice wise. You just don’t hear those kinds of tones and vocal maturity enough anymore Yano? The majority of current chart topping women sound too similar imo. Karen Carpenter was just incredible.
I must say though if you like Karen, have you heard of Rumer? British singer who literally sounds just like Karen it’s scary.

I've been listening to a lot of Joni Mitchell lately (I snapped up two of her albums "Blue" and "Ladies of the Canyon" for under a tenner from a local market - epic!) and she's the same thing as I said earlier - there's just something about her and that whole era. She doesn't have the greatest voice clearly, but she's just magnetic plus an incredible song writer to boot. Profoundly introspective and somewhat haunting lyrics and melodies in her songs. Up there with the other legends surely!

Reading back idk how that totally related to this thread but yeah.. Maybe the greatest voice doesn't always have to mean best "sounding"? Idk... :joker: :skull:

I cant listen to much Cassidy cuz it all too clear and too perfect and I like my music a little dirtier. Eva Cassidy has the clearest tone I've ever heard.

No mention of Nina yet? :(
Zl33hAMrJ7s
No one tugs at the heartstrings like Nina.
In terms of voice alone, I'd also have to throw the names Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush around. All for completely different reasons, of course. Kate for the quirky, ethereal quality; Etta for the sheer power; Stevie for the grit; Joni for the contemplative poetry; Amy for being the most unique voice of the 21st century and my formative years.
I caught a BBC2 thing a month or two ago with the bloke from the Carpenters (I'm terrible with names sorry) and it did awake a love of Karen's voice too, though.

Cheers Ammi!
I've been really into the "California Sound" of the late 60's/early 70's lately and the guys who all lived/jammed in the Laurel Canyon area of LA, particularly after seeing Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood.
The likes of Joni, The Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Mamas & The Papas, The Byrds and many more have been on repeat!

Personally, Pink/Amy Lee/Hayley Williams
But if we’re talking like, generally, then Janis Joplin, Alanis Morissete and Joss Stone have to be in the equation

I remember my dad raving about Jazz singers like Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. He always maintained that Sarah Vaughn was the best Jazz singer he'd ever heard. Most would not have heard of her or be familiar with her work.
I think there are too many genre specific singers to simply judge one as the best. I mentioned Eva Cassidy simply because she has the clearest voice I've ever heard without being attached to any specific genre. Her voice is so clear you can almost hear her move from note to note.
