GREASE star Olivia Newton-John is to be made a Dame in a New Year Honours list packed with names from the world of entertainment.
The singer, 71, gets the gong for services to charity, cancer research and entertainment.
Olivia, who was born in England but moved to Australia aged five, said: “I am extremely excited, honoured and grateful beyond words to be included with such an esteemed group of women who have received this distinguished award before me.
“As a girl born in Cambridge, I am very proud of my British ancestry and so appreciative to be recognised in this way by the United Kingdom.”
James Bond director Sam Mendes, 54, is to be knighted for his contribution to drama.
Meanwhile, Sir Elton John, 72, will have his knighthood upgraded to a Companion of Honour — becoming one of only 65 living recipients of the award.
Steve McQueen, the 50-year-old Oscar-winning director of 12 Years a Slave, will also be knighted for services to film.
Queen drummer Roger Taylor, 70 becomes an OBE while singer Billy Ocean, 69, becomes an MBE for services to music.
Snow Patrol’s lead singer Gary Lightbody, 43, will be made an OBE for services to music and charity. But the news will be bittersweet for him as it comes days after the death of his dad Jack, who had suffered from dementia. His funeral was on Christmas Eve.
TV presenter and campaigner June Sarpong, 42, will be made an OBE, while BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan, 46, is to become an MBE.
Long-serving Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale, 79, will be upgraded to a CBE from an MBE.
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, 60, becomes a CBE — and joked that he would be celebrating like Tommy Shelby, the hard-drinking lead character of the hit BBC drama.
Playwright James Graham, 37, whose stage production of the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? cheating scandal was recently adapted for TV, will be made an OBE.
And stage star Giles Terera, 43, best known for playing Aaron Burr in Hamilton, becomes an MBE.
There are also awards for several TV cooks. Nigel Slater, 61, will become an OBE, while Ainsley Harriott, 62, and Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain, 35, are both made MBEs for services to broadcasting and the culinary arts.
In total, 1,097 people will receive honours, the Cabinet Office said, with 50.7 per cent going to women — the second highest for a New Year Honours list, after 51 per cent in 2014.

What the hell, why is IDS being honoured? People were saying Farage should get a knighthood, and while I don't necessarily agree he's as valid as some of the others, plus he got a bunch of people interested in politics ... but IDS?! NO! Unless they want to give him a Victoria Cross for casualties in the war against the poor.
I had to google some of the others, Nadiya had Debbie Harry show up in her "people also search for" ... why is Queen Blondie in the same search results as a random tv chef? :joker:

I'm sure that was a crushing blow. I'm not for a second suggesting that it is the job of self made people to fund charity. However, if awards are for philanthropy then let's see where these tax free lump sums ..I mean charity donations go.

Retirement age is a suggestion not an order. It just means you have reached an age where you are entitled to claim a pension. Nothing to do with tax.

It’s not very often I agree with you, but spot on, absolute joke.

As I recall the Gibb brothers were all getting into trouble around the Manchester area and the parents decided a new start in Australia was the solution !?!?

Well obviously...There's no JK Rowling homeless shelter is there?
Proportionally her donating 10k would be the equivalent of us donating about 10p. So to be worthy if any 'award' her donations must be substantial. I'm wondering who the lucky beneficiaries are?

Google it, it's too many to mention
As of 2011 she donated over 100 million.
Most causes are about children.
Rowling has contributed money and support for research and treatment of multiple sclerosis, from which her mother suffered before her death in 1990. In 2006, Rowling contributed a substantial sum toward the creation of a new Centre for Regenerative Medicine at Edinburgh University, later named the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic.[190] In 2010, she donated another £10 million to the centre,[191] and in 2019 a further £15 million.[192] wikipedia
Some of the later hp universe books were written exclusively for charity with all profits going there

Oh don't be stupid. There's plenty POC that actually have contributed something that could be honoured in her place.
Maybe it's like the Oscars and her agent paid for it.

why should helping muslim women get jobs in TV be anything?
and i doubt there is any evidence she helped a single one
Marsh.

Her representing a portion of the viewing audience is important of course. But that's not a personal achievement of her own. She won a reality show, she didn't do anything revolutionary.

Sophie Reade deserves an OBE at least.
‘Dogface OBE’ has a nice ring to it
ive never agreed with the honours lists and the fact that they grade the honour as well just makes it twice as bad. Acknowledge people of courage that can be identified in a specific event ... great ... but when someone gets a knighthood for services to the blah industry/charity/music etc ... they can bog off
