View Full Version : Public asked to raise money so Big Ben can bong on Brexit night

:skull:

The mechanism was in place for New Year but has been removed, it was initially claimed it would have cost 120,000 to put it back but this has now risen to a incredible 500,000 and the public are being asked to donate, even if I did agree with Brexit, the cost being claimed has to be some kind of joke...

It's mind blowing that a figure like that can be plucked out of the air with no breakdown of the costs, and fools will pay to crowdfund it, someone will have a nice extra wedge in their bank account on 1st February

If you read my post properly you will see that I never mentioned forum members. I said "people with whom they disagree". That includes everyone they disagree with, on and off the forum.

I don't expect you to be happy. I expect you to say what you think without having to resort to terms like "flagwankery". I've seen that twice now and it makes no more sense the second time.

Finally, I've clearly said in a previous post on this thread, that I think this exercise is a waste of money. But if people want to donate their own money, that's very much up to them.

If you guys think harsh words towards a political party is akin to bigotry then you are everything that's wrong with politics.

Too much tribalism and cultish behaviour, people treat political parties like they're football teams. People are fans of parties and MPs and that's ridiculous. Parties are meant to work for the people, they are meant to answer to the people.

Excellent job of missing the point, there.

The Tories have had ten years in power, people are allowed to think badly of them and calling the people in power scum (who have ****ed up so much and has consistently targeted the vulnerable, as tories always do) is incredibly tame.

The whole 'insulting tories is basically insulting me' attitude is just plain wrong, if you aren't a sitting MP, you don't have a reason to be offended.

The same LT who voted for anti Brexit SNP?

:laugh3:

the SNP stood for 2 basic principles at the last election. Independence for Scotland and remaining in the EU. They also made it clear that a vote for them did not necessarily mean a vote for independence, and it therefore follows that a vote for them also did not exclusively mean remaining in the EU. They took votes from both sectors of the voting community

Hope that's clear now

oris Johnson appears to have backed away from expensive plans to make Big Ben bong to mark the moment Brexit happens, with Number 10 citing "potential difficulties".
It comes after the prime minister raised the prospect of the public being able to raise money for the cost of making Big Ben chime at 11pm on 31 October to mark the UK’s legal exit from the European Union.
"We're working up a plan so people can bung a bob for a Big Ben bong, because there are some people who want to," Mr Johnson said during a BBC interview earlier this week.
But on Thursday, the prime minister’s official spokesman said: “The House of Commons authorities have set out the their may be potential difficulties in accepting money from public donations.”
He continued: “The PM’s focus is on the events which he and the government are planning to mark January 31 and its significant moment in our history and we want to ensure that’s properly recorded.”:

Brexiteers are still pouring cash into a fundraising campaign that seeks to have Big Ben ring to welcome in Brexit despite fears the public’s cash will be rejected.

Stand Up 4 Brexit's "Big Ben must bong for Brexit" campaign had raised just over £150,000 of its £500,000 target on the GofFundMe website by Friday morning.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official spokesman earlier admitted that there could be “potential difficulties” in accepting the money raised by the campaign.

Those who wish to celebrate Britain leaving the EU on January 31 will want to do so in the same manner as New Year's Eve - by looking at a clock, the campaign's organisers wrote online.

"The natural choice for this would be Big Ben but because it is currently undergoing refurbishment, special measures would have to be put in place, which could cost up to £500,000," a statement by StandUp4Brexit founder Rebecca Ryan and Mark Francois MP added.
