AsdaWalmart trials refills at 'sustainability store' in Leeds

[Asda is launching a "sustainability store"
where shoppers can fill their
own containers with food.
Customers at a Leeds branch will
be able to use refill stations for
own brand rice and pasta,
as well as Kellogg's cereals and PG Tips.
Asda is the latest major grocer to
launch an initiative to cut down
on plastic packaging.
UK supermarkets are responsible
for 58 billion pieces of plastic a year,
according to Greenpeace.
Asda uses about 65,000 tonnes
of plastic a year. ]

Great idea tbh. We need to cut down on plastic packaging, and this is a good way to do it.

tbh I think supermarkets go the whole hog - carrier bags should be £1-2, with the profits going to environmental charities, and if this refills trial goes through, packaged goods should have their prices jacked up, with the additional money raised also going to environmental charities.

Yeah, we're going to have to go backwards to go forwards seems like. Back to glass bottles and getting your money deposit back when you return them next is my guess

As nice an idea as this is and I support any way to cut down on plastic the shop will be robbed blind.

I used to work in an Asda that let you weigh your own fruit and veg and we were always catching people out with 30p stickers for a few bananas stuck onto a huge pile that weighed at about £2

The same people who do it are the same who whinge about prices going up too.
