When she grows up she’ll may be a little more tolerant towards the elderly .. they were born and raised in different times ..

A couple of my 80 year old neighbours occasionally say shockingly racist things just in general conversation but they’re still good people .. they just grew up in times of something like 95% white English communities ... times have changed so much , nowadays they see the terrible news stories like the sex rings in the north of England which always seem have a race element ...

I was speaking ‘generally’ .. and yes she should have been more tolerant of an old lady who was could have been suffering from Alzheimer's or something..

If it was said by a younger person that would be different

You surely realise that old folk get easily confused and often say cruel or hurtful things to people they love never mind strangers

I'll make it really simple for you...

Older people feeling less inhibited to say the offensive things on their mind does not make the offensive things on their mind any better.

Alzheimers or "getting old" doesn't create racist/offensive thoughts. Just means they're likely to say them where normally they'd keep it to themselves.

Kind of like excusing the rantings of a drunk person for being drunk. The alcohol didn't create the rantings, just made the person relaxed enough to verbalise them!

So google "old people say racist things" all you like!

I mean...

1) This isn't the original video, it's a lip sync.

2) It's a "viral TikTok" and you can therefore be 90% sure it didn't literally happen. That's not to say it DOESN'T happen, but you can be pretty sure that this specific example is fiction.

3) One of the first things they say is "they were clearly mentally ill", and ignoring parts 1) and 2) and pretending that this IS a real thing... no, I don't think it's "funny" to talk about or encourange violence e.g. "punching a mentally ill person in the throat" for any reason, it's actually pretty grim. Mentally ill and learning disabled people say inappropriate and offensive things. No one has to accept it or like it but maybe not applaud aggressive language and assault :umm2:.

"Getting old" no but alzheimers and other dementia this is actually a gross over-simplification; they definitely CAN come along with a "tourettes-like" compulsion to say the most inappropriate thing. It doesn't mean that person was secretly racist when they were younger, it's literally a thought process of "what would be the worst thing someone could say right now" and that actually being verbalised.

Again, of course, none of this actually happened but I guess that's the problem. Fictional viral videos generating a tidal wave of un-nuanced outrage-opinion based on little to nothing at all and everyone feeding off each other to generate whole belief sets based on layperson opinion instead of actual knowledge and understanding. 2020 innit.

"Unbothered" is fine but they're not unbothered, they're gloating/celebrating it. Again this is of course in the land of make-believe where this incident actually happened and isn't a fictional viral TikTok.

My opinion on this would be different if the person who originally made the content didn't specify "clearly mentally ill" - it completely changes the discussion. Though I wouldn't be comfortable condoning the "I'm going to punch them in the throat" comment either way, the "karma" comment would be more understandable.

But beaming about karma over the death of a mentally ill (IN THEIR OWN WORDS) person because they "said racist stuff"...? Gross.

Tbf "clearly mentally ill" is a poorly used phrase by a lot of people to just dismiss/insult someone so (if this scenario was real that is :worry:) I wouldn't necessarily take it that she diagnosed the woman as actually mentally ill.

I understand where zizu is coming from with elderly people being from a different era were things that have obviously never been ok but somehow where seen as being so back then, things weren't as pc either so being the age they are they will be more set in thier old ways and today's ways will take a bit of time getting used to, that however doesnt excuse being outright offensive and then using age or illnesses as an excuse to get away with it but we rightly expect them to adjust to today's society so in fairness we should also be a little more tolerant and accepting of them trying to catch up. IMO

In the elderly home I visit a lot some of them say things that are completely unacceptable (mostly sexism towards female staff that I've witnessed) but when this is explained to them by staff some of them really dont seem to understand why.

Pretty much, it's just another hoop to jump through to make someone who is a victim of racism look bad.

At the end of the day, if someone's a twat in life then I'm not gonna really pretend to grieve for them in death to make myself look better to other people. That's gross and I'd hate it if a bunch of people who hated me in life pretended like they were my best friend when I died.

I don't think anyone should shed a tear for someone who looks back at slavely fondly.

Absolutely, but there is a clear and obvious gap in age between "when slavery was legal" and "whenever this woman's youth was", let alone the gap between then and now. To try and pass this comment - "bring back slavery" - as a difference in generations today is just insanely myopic.

Its made up, it never happened - this person probably is so stupid they think that an old lady in the street can remember 1830 when she was probably born in 1940.

Its made up, it never happened - this person probably is so stupid they think that an old lady in the street can remember 1830 when she was probably born in 1940.

in creating some fanfiction to get likes on social media all they have done is illustrate how intolerant and poorly educated they are

I don't think the goal in a lip sync intended for humour is to be historically accurate. Probably just to be funny.

Again... there's a pretty big gap between "not shedding a tear" / "not pretending to be upset" when someone dies... and gloating/celebrating. The former is fair enough, the latter is ... uncouth.

I think relief would be fair because he holds so much actual power, but yeah celebrating or gloating - even for Trump (or worse) - is tasteless.

"It's YOUR fault that someone said something racist to you! They could've had Alzheimers or something!!!"

Didn't she say in the vid she had mental health issues? Sometimes people with mental health issues say horrible inappropriate things. It is hard but in those instances you just have to be a bit more tolerant.

No. First, she's a girl. Second, as MB said, this did not happen.

Absolutely, but there is a clear and obvious gap in age between "when slavery was legal" and "whenever this woman's youth was", let alone the gap between then and now. To try and pass this comment - "bring back slavery" - as a difference in generations today is just insanely myopic.

The difference is that you are referring to specifics whilst I was generalising .
