Chat about football or cricket in the workplace should be curtailed,
a management body has warned.
Ann Francke, head of the Chartered Management Institute , said
sports chat can exclude women and lead to more laddish behaviour.
"A lot of women, in particular, feel left out," she told the BBC's Today programme.
"They don't follow those sports and they don't like either being forced to
talk about them or not being included."
"I have nothing against sports enthusiasts or cricket fans - that's great,"
she said.
"But the issue is many people aren't cricket fans," she added, arguing
bosses should crack down on sports banter.
Ms Francke is concerned that discussing football and, for example,
the merits of video assistant refereeing (VAR) can disproportionately exclude women and divide offices.

"It's a gateway to more laddish behaviour and - if it just goes unchecked - it's
a signal of a more laddish culture," she said
"It's very easy for it to escalate from VAR talk and chat to slapping each
other on the back and talking about their conquests at the weekend."

Just listened to her interview, I mean  apparently its not an issue if its two males and one females in the boardroom, where it becomes an issue is when there are 7 or 8 men and one female..... wouldn't you just revert to logging onto TiBB, if you are not interested in the conversation, and that goes for female conversation as well as males, that's what I do :hee:
also
t's very easy for it to escalate from VAR talk and chat to slapping each
other on the back and talking about their conquests at the weekend.
unless they want to be hauled over the coals on a harassment charge this is fairly unlikely
people who literally only talk about sport are so boring

yes they remind me of Arsenal, literally so boring, and now with Arteta even worse. I mean with that squad they should be doing much better but they seem to be going backwards!!

It’s not just an excluding women issue tho. There are many guys, including me, that hate this sort of talk

so because you don't like a topic, no one else can speak about it? what about if you raise a topic that no one else is interested in, would you expect to be silenced?

Why though? If you don't like the topic then why not talk to someone else instead?

:suspect:
Quite easily. He might have no interest in talking about it because he hates the sport.

You cant hate it tho, you can have no interest but obviously appreciate others like it.
Just like if everyone is talking about the masked singer and you dont watch it - you know there are shows you like and like to talk about so you can appreciate how others feel about one you dont watch

You can do both. I can't stand X Factor, but I appreciate there are people who enjoy it.
There are people who enjoy to play with their waste as part of sex games, won't make me hate it any less if someone were to defecate on me. :hmph:

I hate sport and have nothing to add to any conversations about sport... BUT! Wtf is this lady talking about?
I am a huge advocate for team morale in the workplace and banning people from talking about a topic they're passionate about is just going to make them feel like prisoners in their workplace.

I agree with Jigs. A happy workforce is a productive workforce. You can't dictate what people can and can't talk about, it would breed resentment.

This.
Also what's to stop workplaces banning chats about other topics too? It's why nobody should be endorsing this mad woman's ideas.
