HOWEVER I have recently amended my stance on Self-ID from "not that worrying" to "worth keeping an eye on". There are some governments and institutions running off half-cocked (..... ... ... .... I...) with it and implementing changes and policies with absolutely NO basis in research or impact studies being carried out first. Which is never good, for ANY reason. There are also some very dubious activist groups abusing the issue for a sort of "shielded status" / playing into all of the "cancelled culture" BS.

But would still add that people need to be wary of allowing the anger and frustration they're feeling towards extreme elements and people abusing the system to bubble over. It's worth remembering that extremists are LOUD, and so it's easy to mistake them for a large proportion of the whole group.

I think the tipping point has been passed to be honest; I think the damage has sadly already quietly been done. Like you say, people are afraid to talk about it publicly so they're not. When the bubble bursts and it becomes evident that there's actually a large amount of accumulated frustration under the surface, it'll be too late. It's an increasingly common scenario in all sorts of things at the moment and I think we're only at "tip of the iceberg" levels.

That's fair enough, I was more on about the story than this debate you guys are having. I think self ID should only be able to be used once you are in touch with NHS (or the equivalent abroad) about trans stuff, rather than just being able to declare it with nothing to back it up

Clearly this guy isn't anything other than a sexual predator. I certainly wasn't trying to say otherwise. My only point in posting this I guess was to highlight how making Self ID too easy, you will have people looking to exploit loopholes (like that Yaniv weirdo in Canada) And people should be talking about potential problems so that everyone is protected as much as they can be. I think shutting down conversations will only make bad feelings fester and worse like TS said earlier

That all seems fair enough, though the NHS does require you to self identify before they allow patients to get HRT, so it'd a bit of a difficult thing. Trans people in general understand why the NHS does this but would prefer to be diagnosed and get the HRT without having to self identify before any actual medical stuff has taken place.
