View Full Version : The Sun records £68 Million in losses

The Sun recorded a loss of £68m last year amid falling print sales and the enormous cost of phone-hacking claims against its parent company from figures including Sir Elton John and Heather Mills.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers, which publishes the Sun and retains liability for the activities of the News of the World, spent an enormous £54m on legal fees and damages related to the illegal interception of voicemails.

The figures, which cover the 12 months to July 2019, were revealed in accounts filed this weekend. They show that more a decade after the phone-hacking scandal began, the company is still spending an eighth of its revenue dealing with the fallout, as new cases involving the likes of Prince Harry continue to be filed at the high court.

Lawyers for phone-hacking victims have previously used pre-trial hearings to claim that phone hacking was widespread at the Sun but these cases have always been settled before going to trial, avoiding the need for the claims to be tested in court.
Settlements between News Group Newspapers and phone hacking victims usually include a statement that it was journalists at the News of the World, not the Sun, who were responsible for intercepting voicemails. The company has always said voicemail interception was limited to the defunct Sunday newspaper and did not take place at the Sun.

A lot of newspapers are in financial trouble. People just don't want to pay for things (like news) they can get for free on the Internet.

Let the free market kill it - if no-one buys it, it will be hoisted on its own petard of phone hacking and attacking celebrities. etc.

Anyone wanna bet they'll get a bailout?

Good.

I don't normally cheer at a company losing money, but in this case I'll make an exception.

this is largely due to a write off of legal costs, and the Sun group will have gained much more than 68 million over the years in the sales their tactics generated. By writing it off now, they make a rather large tax saving too, so I wouldn't be too smug about it.

The sun was given away for free at most it's been what...20p?
It's not sales that's affected the propaganda filled rag this badly.

...online usage is changing as well I think and I think will also decline because social media seems to be taking over as a news source as well...articles are copied and pasted onto there from what I can see...

Despite falling sales of the print edition, News Group Newspapers said more people were visiting the Sun's website.

It said 32.8 million adults in the UK visited the site a month, 3.6 million more than the previous year.

There is currently a trending hashtag "#IBlockedTheSun" which comes from YouTuber JaackMaate. Seems like there is definitely boycotting going on (for the better, and hopefully this encourages changes to be made).
