So Boris has announced that in effect I can't go to bingo for the foreseeable future. Was supposed to be going tonight. Not now.

Well pissed off.

But if the bingo hall is still open then surely you could of still gone ?, They can't force people to stay home.

I understand being on the safe side, but people will still go out .

Okay fair enough , like I said it's being on the safe side .

People have plenty of shows & gigs booked, they'll probably still go unless those things are cancelled.

Thing is, I totally get it if all of this really is just temporary (until we get health services bolstered to handle it as an ongoing disease), but I just don't really see how it can be "just a few weeks" or "just a few months"... and so, I am conflicted. It feels a bit like in exchange for the best chance at staying alive, we all have to give up living, and so what is the point? The ironic part being, the people I see mostly agreeing with that attitude are the over-70's that all of the isolation is designed to protect. We can't isolate forever. Even right now this is a totally untested phenomenon - we have absolutely no idea what the damage of essentially suspending society for months is going to be. I think it's going to be an absolute disaster if I'm being entirely honest. I currently feel VERY, VERY privileged that I can work 100% from home, and that more than 50% of my wife's income is freelancing from home as well.

Just because the government haven’t enforced it doesn’t mean we can’t start.

For someone who has ties to Italy, surely you understand the importance of locking down and self isolating before things get to that point :worry:

Because if everyone goes by the logic ‘one person won’t make much difference’ then suddenly 400 people are out and the virus spreads again

But it's already spreading... if we're not in lockdown and pubs/bars stay open then you might as well just go. If we end up having to all be in self-isolation then sure, but as of now that's not the case. If it was such a bad thing to be doing, we wouldn't even be discussing whether we should or not because the rules would've been put into place straight away.

If it was safe to be out and about then almost every country wouldn’t be in lockdown ...

We’re just run by literal boomers who don’t know what they’re doing so it’s best just to avoid their advice and use common sense instead

I think it's just more for the people who are older/living with older family members that should probably be more sensible about what they're doing.

It's debatable really... because supermarkets will have to stay open I don't really think that everything else should be avoided as well because... that's just going to run into even more problems in the long-run.

A friend of mine who is a bar manager in London made the point that advising people not to go bars while not ordering the shut down of bars is going to put them out of business with no social welfare support

Sadly this could've all been avoided if every country had've decided to temporarily shut down the boarders with China whilst they were dealing with the Coronavirus, and the funny thing is that China are recovering now as well so life would be continuing as normal for the most part if the leaders had've done what I said. But sadly they favoured money over health which has put people like you and my Nan in this position.

I think at this point it is the right decision, but it could've been easily avoided imo.

What I read was, most bars/restaurants etc. have insurance for things like mandatory shut-downs so if they were TOLD to close they would get an insurance payout and could survive... but if they're allowed to stay open - while everyone is being told not to go - that's a loophole in the insurance and the insurer doesn't have to pay out because it's technically just a lack of customers, not a mandatory shutdown.

Countless hospitality and retail businesses are going to go under, and this is global... the impact on people's livelihoods is frankly going to be catastrophic. I really don't feel like, in the desperate scrabble to control the virus/protect frontline healthcare, enough has been done to mitigate the secondary damage at all and there are going to be a lot of actual deaths by the end of this that have nothing to do with catching the virus.
