Even this isn't true, Trump is in a high risk category yes (as a man over 70) but even then there's still a more than 50% chance he wouldn't even need hospital care. He seems to be in relatively good physical health for his age (because he's rich).
Yes, he might get it bad and die. It's possible for anyone. But you need to stop reading the possibilities and declaring them as likelihoods or certainties.

Could it be with the number of celebrities and notable people that have been reported to have tested positive for the virus, that the infection has spread rapidly through the population, and the Oxford University study that suggested 50% of the country have already had it, is accurate?

i think it's accurate. I know quite a few people that were a bit under the weather with unexplained coughs etc, but no fever. It's speculation obviously, but it wouldn't surprise me if these were very mild cases. My brother lost his taste for a few days ... no other symptoms, it's just not a normal event to lose your sense of taste like that without other symptoms

It would be a sensible assumption, anyway.
Well if it's 50% already, what's herd immunity? 70%?

Like Doctor Who's Tardis, the property is deceptively large, despite its modest townhouse appearance. Behind the Georgian entrance lie approximately 100 rooms, connected by a labyrinth of halls and corridors – complete with a 0.5 acre garden. Following the death of Count Bothmar, who owned the mansion at the rear of No. 10, George II offered it as a gift to Sir Robert Walpole after the deeds reverted to the crown.

Agree.
A few politicians doesnt make it 50%.
Scaremongering :hehe:50% having it would be the best news in weeks so more "wishful thinking" than scaremongering.
But I agree that various politicians having it means little as they've been in close contact. There are enough "various" celebrities etc. with it (or at least claiming to have it) to suggest much higher numbers than official cases shows, but then, we already more or less know that to be the case. I think 50% spread is a vast over-estimation obviously.
Anyone hear the guy ringing into LBC a few minutes ago ??
He told of his friend stuck in a Vietnamese hospital after 27 days and STILL positive as of yesterday !
They quarantined him after random testing of a group of people ... he then had a sore throat for 7 days then went downhill . 3 days on a IV drip then started to improve slowly . He’s had no symptoms for the last 14 days but they won’t release him until he’s had two negative tests .. he was still testing positive as of yesterday !!
Just as worrying is the guy in the adjoining bed who’s been in all that time but with ZERO symptoms but is still also testing as positive !!
This is a scary development to my mind and could be a game changer :(

They can go out with a sibling or parent and exercise, ride a bike....jog, there are families with kids in our street they go out every day together and ride their bikes up and down, but they are not joining in with others kids on the street as they and their parents are obviously aware of what is acceptable, the kids come out at different times to other families
I dont know what part of do not meet others you are not getting.
Stay at home
Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home)
If you go out, stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people at all times
Wash your hands as soon as you get home
Do not meet others, even friends or family.
You can spread the virus even if you don’t have symptoms.

Unfortunately, I would love to let my son out to play football in the street but there is no way a child of his age would remember to stay 6ft away from the others. He has been playing football since he was 3, training twice a week on drills, spacing etc but get them in a game and its still swarm ball. Its tough but he just has toto play in the back garden for now. Luckily, we have a decent sizes back garden. I feel for kids (and their parents) who live in flats etc where getting fresh air is just not that easy.
To be fair, I don't see how you can possibly play football whilst staying more than 3m apart
They could always just avoid tackling/ close contact .. I spent hours with mates just passing a ball ( a good distance) to each other ... practicing techniques and controlling balls coming at you

Unfortunately, I would love to let my son out to play football in the street but there is no way a child of his age would remember to stay 6ft away from the others. Like these kids who live in back to back terraces?

But I would still plonk them all in front of a warm fire with a nice book atm.

It's a bit early to be slamming the breaks yet. They will need to do some serious re-evaluation if we're still in lockdown by the end of May, though.
I know that when you take a moment to think about it Kizzy, you of all people on here do understand that poverty kills just as surely as any virus. We need to be pragmatic and very careful.
He has said today
he still has a Fever
so will remain in his Downing St. Flat.
He also stated Good Weather
tomorrow but he wants you to stay at home?
Somehow I think many will go out
ignore the PM.I also think many will venture out this weekend, I was out early this morning just a walk round my small village and the amount of people already out and about was surprising.
On the topic of Boris, I thought he looked ill on the video stream.
The daily exercise is meant to be alone or only with household members, letting your kids out to play football with the other local kids is completely irresponsible and for once, I agree with Adam on something like this, parents found to be allowing their children to do so, should be finedThis.

The rules are clear and stretching them little by little to suit is just going to cause these lockdowns to drag on for longer.

You carry on being as rude and patronising as you like then cherie, I'm used to it.
Fact is when or if the advice changes there will be those who toe the govt line just because they've been told to regardless of whether the government themselves are following expert advice. This is not an admirable trait in anyone imo.

It does, however I do not believe for a moment the reasoning given for the rethink on herd immunity, that the lockdown is impacting on the poorest in society and that's seen as a negative let alone the reason for a rethink?...
Nah, I don't buy it, from the designers of austerity which impacted on the vulnerable like a virus? Nope.

Nah, I don't buy it, from the designers of austerity which impacted on the vulnerable like a virus? Nope.Well no their own reason would be to protect their own interests (as always). Nevertheless, when economies shrink or worse, crash, it is the poorest who suffer the most. That much we do know, from all across history.

I read earlier today that he still had a temperature (10 days into symptoms developing)... That is an awful long time to be running a fever.
It doesn't necessarily mean he's in ICU or severe condition, they may just be taking precautions incase he develops pneumonia. Other politicians who have had it have been recovered within a week so to still be running a temp at 10 days is a concern.
one thing i know is that they won't be telling us the whole truth, and he wouldn't be in hospital unless he needed to be ... so many tests etc could be done where he is

He has potentially hindered his recovery by staying in charge of government... I was reading earlier about the links between sleep, adrenaline and fever. Basically when you have a fever, it tends to "break" when you're in a relaxed deep-sleep state and the process is held back by high adrenaline levels. Essentially if you don't let yourself relax when you're ill, the fever can fail to break, your immune system doesn't operate anywhere near full capacity, and that massively increases the risk of developing a secondary infection (like pneumonia). That's why they start to be concerned when people's temp is still up at 7 days. Ideally, if your immune system is doing its job, it should be down within 3 - 5 days.
Basically the stress and probably sleep deprivation that comes with being PM may well be part of what's stopped him from making a timely recovery.

That’s pure speculation, the truth is some get the virus worse than others.I said "potentially" because yes it's speculation, a possible reason, not a definite reason. That's what "potentially" means :idc:.
However, no, it isn't "pure" speculation - not getting enough rest makes it harder to recover from illness, that is 100% medical fact. The part that's speculation is assuming he hasn't been resting properly, maybe he has been getting plenty of sleep and isn't stressed at all... I just think that seems unlikely. I'm not blaming him either, he's not in a position where he can just stop stressing and relax unfortunately.
Its still worth saying for other people though. Like BOTS said, some people have a "stiff upper lip, just push through it" approach to illness and it's worth pointing out that it can hinder recovery.

I don't like that the mods brushed it under the carpet and are insisting that everyone simply forget about it but that's their business - I'm not going to.I never even saw that comment tbh, did you report it?

No you bloody well won’t and this should not be discussed openly on the forum or is mob rule from now on
He has potentially hindered his recovery by staying in charge of government...
Interesting and understandable . Thanks

Ts is making a really valid point I totally agree, if you have any illness or virus that requires rest to fight off you should be off work and resting, it's common sense.
Boris spent so many years trying to get into no 10 he's understandably reluctant to hand over the reins, looks like now he doesn't have a choice. I wouldn't wish this on anyone and obvously hope he recovers asap.

I actually do feel for the guy ( :umm2: ) because in a position of authority like that it's not even as simple as checking out - even if he did totally hand over to someone else, can a PM really sleep soundly and not be in a state of extreme stress? In fact not being kept totally up-to-date might even make the stress worse. It's a bit of a Catch-22.
My wife was talking about a similar thing a few days ago, how things are different for Mental Health staff in wards vs in community MH/addictions. In the wards when you clock off, you hand over your patients to the next person on shift. In the community your patients are your patients... you can still take annual leave, you can still be off sick if you're sick, but you still feel responsible for those people and think about how they're getting on in your absense, worry about them if they seemed in a bad way when you last saw them, etc. She's quite worried about this at the moment actually - phone contact only, and much less contact than normal even with that. For obvious reasons, but she still feels a duty of care for those people and it isn't quite being met under the exceptional circumstances.
I imagine you could scale that up country-wide for a PM. Even if he takes time off, he'll still overall feel responsible. Then again... neither are the sort of job I'd take on, for that reason. I know I need to be able to clock out from work outside of work hours and not worry about what's happening. People know the responsibilities they're taking on... but it still must not be the easiest thing in the world.

Well I can see the comparison to an extent, however I'd say his motives were more about relinquishing power than any noble sense of responsibility.
The maximum wait on tests would have been a couple of hours, so there is a more fundamental reason for him being in hospital.
He will be getting the best possible treatment available, we know that, so we will just have to see how it pans out

he may look random, but he is a very driven guy, and those types of people tend to focus on things till they are done, they can't help it .... i used to be like that until i got older and wiser
So yes, he won't want to relinquish the reins, but if he is knocked out by a sedative he doesn't have any choice

Maybe, worth mentioning though that there's a difference between oxygen on demand via mask (which a lot of moderate cases benefit from) and being on full ventilator. There's also other reasons to be in, like being on fluids if the main issue is the fever. To keep things in perspective - it's worth remembering that 20% of cases need hospital treatment but only about 5% of cases are critical (needing ICU / ventilator). 3/4 of hospital treated cases are not critical so it's still more likely than not that he'll be OK - unless we hear that he's been transferred to ICU. That's when survival rate drops to 50/50.

I haven’t seen anything about it ‘going onto his lungs OR him being on oxygen ..
They’ve just said he’s had tests done because he’s still got the fever

We do similar plus clean most things with an antibacterial wipe ..
Maybe better to extend your paper/cardboard time as well .
Tests in the US show that the virus lives on copper for 4 hours , paper/cardboard for 24 hours and plastic / stainless steel or similar for 3 DAYS

I read 9 days on metal surfaces :/
Only in very specific circumstances, things like temperature changes and movement affect it. Like it was found after 9 days on some surfaces in cabins on the "infected" cruise ship, because the rooms had been blocked off totally untouched for that whole time and the temperature was pretty constant. Also it's always just "up to" x hours/days, it CAN survive on those surfaces for that amount of time but the risk drops considerably quite quickly.
Obviously still take precautions though.
