Chewing gum is a big cause of chokingIt shouldn't clog your Airways if you swallow it (its a different "tube" not far down) but swallowing a lot of it can clog up your stomach and bowels. It can basically clump together into a larger mass in there which then can't pass through your digestive system. If that causes a total blockage you're in trouble (it will be extremely painful and can only be removed by surgery).

I think you have to be swallowing several pieces a day over a long period of time for that to happen though, otherwise the pieces are small enough to pass through over time.

I actually did a lot of research into this (including pestering doctors) because a couple of years ago, my eldest left a large "roll" of bubble gum sitting out and my youngest ate the whole lot in one go :facepalm:.
