The Chinese government has signalled an end to the human consumption of dogs, with the agriculture ministry today releasing a draft policy that would forbid canine meat.
Citing the “progress of human civilisation” as well as growing public concern over animal welfare and prevention of disease transmission from animals to humans, China’s Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs singled out canines as forbidden in a draft “white list” of animals allowed to be raised for meat.
The ministry called dogs a “special companion animal” and one not internationally recognised as livestock.
The city of Shenzhen recently approved the first ever mainland China ban on consumption of dog and cat meat, a move that has given hope to animal welfare groups worldwide that other parts of the country could soon follow suit. The new draft policy has provided even more.
“The signal is the first ever from a ministry that dogs are not food animals,” Paul Littlefair, international head of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told the Guardian.

I'm pretty sure they've banned wet markets but apparently they are still a thing despite everything.
I think this is more of a move to appease the west, such laws sadly won't matter if they aren't enforced.

I've written countless times to the Chinese Embassy, And the South Korean Embassy, and the embassies of other countries with questionable animal welfare records, and I know I'm not alone in that, thank God. While it's good to hear this, do I believe it? Not really. Animal welfare isn't going to be high on China's list if Human welfare isn't. But their stuff is cheap right? And lots of people don't care.

Great news but as others have said, I believe this will never be enforced properly.
They SAY they’re gonna stop but ...

I've seen images online of markets with dogs on hooks & skewerd, like they were regular kebabs :yuk::umm2:.
I saw an article about them being burnt with boiling water and barbecued alive, the still images are truly grim.
Why torture them like that ?!! .

I know people are saying this won’t be enforced but I’m hopeful it’ll at least stop the dog festival that happens every year

I've read that most of the big US based and Japan based companies are pulling their manufacturing out of China, started before Covid (trade war) but has accelerated since February.
Tbh I think Chinese manufacturing, and thus their entire economy, is ****ed.

Yeah there's charities to prevent Tigers etc being killed for their bones.
It IS animal cruelty, I saw a documentary some years ago about animals being skinned alive to sell the fur  .
Those images are hard to get out of your head, it really was distressing and nasty and just torture for the sake of it! .

Yeah they're insane, they think torturing dogs and killing them slowly makes them taste better. Absolute monsters.
