I do wonder though if he had a lot if large donations as it jumped from 3.5m to 6m in hours

Great guy, but the NHS should always be public-funded and I think his fundraising would be better spent on a mixture of commemorating NHS/careworkers who have died as a result of the virus (either with a national monument or individual smaller tributes like benches, plaques, etc), and also perhaps paying for their funerals/headstones etc.

I would say treating NHS workers etc. but the sheer number of them would vastly outweigh even his campaign.

I think alot of them have their own Go Fund pages, the poor nurse who died giving birth has a fund with over 100k in it

He only wanted to raise 1,000, I am sure they will decide how best to spend it now the figure is crazy

It's a nice story for these dark times but it's a shame that we have to raise funds at all for the NHS when the government should have been giving it the funds it needs to begin with.

Still, good on the man, I hope he stays safe throughout all of this and gets knighted for it.

Still, good on the man, I hope he stays safe throughout all of this and gets knighted for it.I'd say it's more like activism/shaming for the government though, which is a good thing. £20 million (as discussed in another thread :umm2: ) is not a huge amount of money to an organisation that runs at £370 million per day, but hopefully the fact that he needs/wants to do this as one elderly gentleman should raise awareness for the fact that the government needs to provide real, permanent funding increases.

..So, something a little bit more uplifting......wondering what our Tom’s been up to...I’m thinking that he might do a Harry and Meghan and go off to live the Hollywood life in LA....

Captain Sir Tom Moore signs film deal - and wants Michael Caine or Anthony Hopkins to play him...

He jokes: "I don't know of any 100-year-old actors but I'm sure Michael Caine or Anthony Hopkins could do a wonderful job."

Captain Sir Tom Moore will have a film made about his life, following a fierce bidding war over rights to his story.

The World War II veteran, who raised £38.9m for the NHS by walking laps of his garden, has also broken two Guinness World Records, scored a Number One single and been knighted by the Queen.

The centenarian joked: "I don't know of any 100-year-old actors but I'm sure Michael Caine or Anthony Hopkins could do a wonderful job if they were prepared to age up!"

Earlier this month, on the publication of his autobiography and the launch of his charity foundation, he said he would love David Beckham to play him due to his "charm".

Described as "uplifting" and "life-affirming", the biopic is being fast-tracked and will be shot next year.

It will focus on the former British Army captain's relationship with his family, and how he inspired them after moving into their home following the death of his wife.

The movie will also draw on his military career and look at the way personal grief and the horrors of war helped him develop a determination that has shaped his life.

Even if he has been vaccinated he could still catch it, and in some cases people will still die, just not in the numbers we see now, same as people who have had the flu jab, it’s not a cure all

It's hard to be annoyed at a 100 year old taking a trip anywhere tbh, who knows how long this ****e is going to go on for v's how much time he has left

Pretty much, I guess they weighed up the pros and cons of going

It must be very tough for the very elderly and people with terminal illnesses, this is coming up to almost a whole year of Lock Downs and restrictions, it's been hard for everyone but when your time is that limited and precious it must be really upsetting and tough to cope, I can see why he decided to go and I hope he had a blast

...I have to say that I felt that at Christmas as well, how conflicting it felt because for some, they would feel that it would be the last Christmas with their family but weren’t able to spend it with their whole families...

No one should be abusing him,but really Piers Morgan is such a hypocrite ,had it been anyone else he would have been abusing them on morning TV. Piers himself went off abroad on his jollies, strange man.:wavey:

I think the difference is Piers was on telly telly us what madness mixing and travelling at Christmas was and then went off himself ...hypocrite

Unfortunately if his family are with him they don’t expect him to make it.

I mean not to be harsh but at 100+ they don't really "expect" people to survive a bad cold or stomach bug... which isn't to say that people don't survive those... but basically at that age any health issue at all is "life threatening".

Irrelevant

okay you say he could have gone in the last 100 years and now say his finances are irrelevant

I will mention that to BA next time I want to travel first class to Barbados, I am sure they will just let me on the plane

If this was anyone else, there would be a lack of sympathy given that he likely got it by travelling abroad for a holiday. I don't wish him ill, but I struggle to sympathise with anyone who gets covid when they travel abroad for non-essential reasons.

No being funny but why is everyone making this dusty old man out to be some kind of hero when he literally just walked around his garden??

You left out the part where he raised £30m for NHS Charities.

Don't understand why people are claiming he caught it in Barbados when he caught it a month later.

Travel was allowed along as you keep to the laws and restrictions in each country something he did but the young social media influences refused to do

It’s simple really, you are not allowed to visit any one who has Covid, the only time you are allowed is when they can do no more or they know you are not going to make it.

As to being a hundred or more, not all people are the same and some can be in remarkably good health compared to people half their age.

Sad news, I might not be too sympathetic to how he got it, if the Barbados stuff is true, but that doesn't change the fact that it's sad.

At least he led a full life and made a difference with his time.

Bless him.
His attitude was one of the most endearing things about him too.

He had an incredible last year of his life and in a few ways, he helped bring some relief and inspiration to others in theirs.

A sad day, however from the 1940s to the last year of his life.
Quite a gift to the World was Sir Captain Tom.

Sadness and pride from his family and many people, at and wishing they could be at his funeral, will I think and should be in abundance today.
