So jumping straight into 50th, we have the Jonas Brothers comeback album. I’ll be honest straight off the bat, this was a reunion I didn’t have many hopes for. I never vibed with their original endeavour, and I felt Joe and Nick (and, well Kevin?) had both gone on to much better sounds with their solo projects. But, I was shocked to say the least when I heard Sucker and it was just a sound that worked. It was modern, it was catchy, it just sounded good. And upon hearing Cool, it marked the point where I decided I was going to give this reunion a chance.

It’s an album that impresses with its singles, from those I’ve mentioned, but falls flat on some of its album exclusives. Don’t Throw It Away, Happy When I’m Sad, Hesitate and Rollercoaster have really nice sounds, they’re a good bop every now and then. Whilst I enjoy most of the songs on this album whilst I’m listening through, there’s nothing particularly memorable here. I mean, I’ve been listening to it whilst setting up this thread to refresh myself, and I remember only half of the 14 song album which isn’t an impressive statistic.

But it earns a spot on my ranking because there’s nothing offensive here and everything’s fairly pleasant listening.

I support this placement if not just for the fact that Joe Jonas is pointing his bum in my direction on the album cover

Sorry Daniel :p

This is one of the albums I’ve listened to most recently, but it’s already made an impression on me. Despite being Neck Deep’s weakest album by quite a stretch imo, I found it to be an enjoyable listen. It was my introduction to a heavier sound, and I found it to be great for breaking that in. Like the Jonas Brothers album I found some of the songs to feel quite similar sounding, but I think if I get a bit longer with it then I’ll definitely grow a little more love for it. I think Losing Teeth is an incredible opener, and definitely a standout track for me.

8PRymK0tM80

For me it’s 100% a top heavy album, I much prefer the tracks at the start and my interest drains a little towards the end, but it doesn’t affect my overall thought of it being a solid album too much and I’d still give it a solid 7/10.

Tyler Joseph’s first and only solo album is the next one out. Although lyrically deep, touching on hard-hitting issues such as suicide, mental health and depression in most of the tracks (including Drown, Taken By Sleep and Goner, the latter being remastered many times in the future), my main criticism is the production quality. It was a completely self produced album by a teenage musician new to sound technology, so as you can expect audio issues and technical glitches are a regular occurrence.

upzAfLIfaek

VOWO3xONG3E

YgmgFLV0fp4

But that aside, it’s an incredibly well written album. Known for his more subtle and layered lyricism in recent years, No Phun Intended provides a very blunt and explicit look at Joseph’s teenage state. In many of the tracks he calls upon his religion to provide him answers, and in Prove Me Wrong, one of my personal favourites, he questions his ability to fall in love.

3l-WFk_bvEo

Overall, it’s an album that I see as a huge window into Joseph’s life, both through the music, the lyrics and the skill. It’s not an album I return to often, but it’s an album that I can appreciate for what it is.

Although it has one of my favourite album covers of all time, the same unfortunately cannot be said for the album content. One this I’ll praise is the lyricism, the way Tyler Joseph tells a story is something I’ll never be short of amazed at, and this especially shines in Addict With a Pen.

0PqpRnpE4yg

Some of the highs of the album, for me, occur on the upbeat, pop-rock-rap infused bangers like a Fall Away, Friend Please, Air Catcher and Trapdoor. On the other hand, some of the tracks get a little, well, boring, and having a string of piano-centric songs drags the album from what twenty one pilots are best known for.

I still praise the lyricism, and each song has a story I can get behind and delve into (and so do each of the band members x), but it’s not an album that is easy to get through if you prefer something with higher energy.

maybe self titled would have been better with Josh.

I mean they still had a drummer (albeit not one of Josh’s standard) and the drums weren’t technically the direct issue (but sure, I’d have been happier with more). The album just needed a few more bops, or even just a few more generally upbeat songs. The piano ballads get boring after a while.

From one of my favourite album covers to one of the worst, it’s very, erm, ‘graphic design is my passion’.

As a completely self produced album, and old in git in the same sense as others such as No Phun Intended, it matches up well. There’s clearly a few audio errors and the vocals are patchy in areas but behind its flaws lie some absolute gems. The album kickstarts with Silver, a pop punk style banger with a catchy chorus, which sets sights high for the rest of the album.

xqLsQHdT55k

Not everything matches up however, Bones of 92 and I Was Hiding Under Your Porch Because I Love You are songs that have the patchiest vocals and the actual songs, to me, don’t make up for it.

The album ends (well, except for the acoustic and demo versions stuck onto the end) on Fantastic, which pardon the pun, is a Fantastic way to end the album. It’s the only other song that really gets on the same level as Silver.

AIK2IXWK2R0

On the whole it’s a decent album, theres blatant rookie mistakes on the production but it’s nothing too hard to listen to when you look past those.

The queen of singing in cursive has arrived

But, on a serious note, I really appreciated this album from Halsey. This was the first I heard from her, besides the ****ty DJ collabs (closer is tragic, don’t @ me), and wow what a shock. I had no idea she created this well crafted, almost conceptual, alternative music. The album starts of with Castle, a song that I really love for its sound.

Vk0xkd8qs9I

The album has some real bangers though, like Hold Me Down, Roman Holiday (with Josh Dun’s gorgeous live drums ) and Strange Love.

xKnG2d9tZdU

heMTVlawFmM

x-Jo25SL56A

But most importantly, this album has possibly my favourite Halsey song of all time, Colors. I love the sound, I love the lyrics, I love the visuals, and I really connected with it the first time I got to listen. I can always go back to it and still jam like I did the first time, and that’s something for me that’s rare to find in a song.

JGulAZnnTKA

yOwZRx5oFCs

One of the drawbacks for me though, is that it’s a pretty lengthy album at 16 songs. That isn’t always a bad thing, but if you’re gonna serve a 16 song album then everything on it needs to have a purpose and I find with some of these tracks they either just don’t belong on the album or just simply aren’t needed.

The OPH albums from Bastille are something really special to me, I love seeing the collaborations they form with other artists, and their unique take on covers. Right at the start of the album we have Bite Down, featuring HAIM. This is such a beautiful arrangement, their voices mesh so well together and it’s just so easy to bop to.

WL1WuxL2bMc

There’s so many other great collaborations on this album, including MNEK’s work on bad_news and Axe to Grind with Tyde and Rationale.

jtVPa5baudI

Gdcv2h4TvPA

The album doesn’t slow down towards the end either. Some of my favourite songs are in the rear end, Lizzo’s rap verse on Torn Apart Pt II and the closing track Remains, with Skunk Anansie and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man. The latter was a track I had little home, as I’m not keep on either collaborator, but it ended up as one of my favourites as I just find it beautiful to listen to.

This was my introduction to P!ATD, and at the time, I really did love this album. It was exactly the sound I was vibing with at that age, it was fun to listen to, and my friends also loved it. But as I’ve discovered with most Panic albums, they just get very old, very quickly. This album still has some of my favourite Panic songs of all time on it, especially Hallelujah which is a pure BOP!

DxYyHHR0Q1c

I also love the old school, almost crooner sound spun with a modern twist in songs like Death of a Bachelor and Impossible Year, it’s a style that really suits Brendon’s voice and showcases why he really is one of the best male vocalists of our generation.

R03cqGg40GU

e6XHLcIGESY

Now although I would say he is one of the best vocalists from our generation, with the power in his voice and the range that he possesses, he is not the best songwriter and it’s a flaw that lets him down in many of the songs imo. If the actual songs he made were just a little better, he really would be unstoppable.

The collaboration between Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth is nothing short of incredible, honestly. They have voices that blend together so uniquely, they have production that sets every song alight, and songs that you can really bop to.

Their first outing as a duo was in 2019, and it’s a decent first EP, but not their best work. The star of the album is very much the titular track Strange Love, it has really nice vocals, I vibe with the lyrics and I am obsessed with the production.

jAGuAFzicm0

Although I vibe with some of the other tracks such as Drug, Adrenaline and Lucy, they all seem just a little overshadowed by the titular track to me.

One of the things that attracted me to Super Whatevr was the tone of Skyler McKee’s voice, it’s just so unique and I love listening to it. Personally I don’t think he truly found the exact sound that suited him until their latest endeavour (Don’t You Wanna Be Glad), but the offering from Never Nothing is a good listen nevertheless.

Some tracks are good but don’t ever seem to reach any kind of peak or climax, which is a shame as there’s a lot of potential, but some of my favourites are examples of songs done well. These include subtle love song Kathrin with a K, and old school pop song Cops on Motorcycles.

C9NXzd42Oos

vnf8xW1ce4U

Other highlights on the album include the fastpaced banger Misquote, the simplistic Telelelevision and disappointingly short 8:51AM (Saturday Morning Congestion Blues).

Oops not RileyH fumed again :skull:

Look, it’s another Panic! album that I do really like, I just liked it more when I first heard it. This too, just got stale quickly. That being said, this album does have some of the best Panic! songs to date, special mentions there to the opener This Is Gospel, Miss Jackson (feat. Lolo) and Girls/Girls/Boys - a song that everyone assumed was about bisexuals but turns out to be about a threesome :)
