UK airlines say they have been told the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new restriction is expected to take effect at the end of this month.

Industry body Airlines UK said the policy needed "a credible exit plan" and should be reviewed weekly.

People arriving in the UK would have to self-isolate at a private residence.

Government and aviation sources told BBC News that the quarantine would mean people might be expected to provide an address when they arrive at the border.

It is not clear how long the new travel restriction would be in place and whether non-UK residents would be allowed to stay in rented private accommodation.

"We need to see the details of what they are proposing", said Airlines UK, which represents British Airways, EasyJet and other UK-based airlines, in a statement.

It is not clear whether there are plans to quarantine people arriving to the UK via other modes of transport. Eurostar and P&O ferries declined to comment, while other firms have not yet responded to the BBC's queries.

An impossible task....so you give an address and told to go there and quarantine yourself...who will be checking up on them???

And we’re still the only country on the whole entire planet that isn’t closing our borders or doing airport health checks

Asking people to self quarantine isn’t actually enough, but watch the right wing press paint the idea that it’s genius and heroic as ****

People are expected to be responsible enough to follow the rules, seems to be working in most other places

The virus isn't going anywhere, this is how we are going to have to get used to living for a long time, whats even more scary is in 18 year they have never found a vaccine for SARs so there may never be a cure, so wrap your head around that if you can!

Tbf they seem a bit more positive about something being found to control it, but not in the short term, so get used to social distancing is my message to TiBB :hee:

Virus’s often mutate to become less deadly over time, hardly going to be social distancing for 18 years

We have no idea what % of the public have had the virus in the UK, thats why any death figures are completely meaningless. If for example 25-50% of the population have already had the virus then the chances of catching it in the future will be close to zero. We need the anti body test so that we actually can measure what effect exposure to the virus will have in the future. It's a simple as that really. The anti body test is something that can be developed and probably won't take more than a year to become extremely accurate
