When watching a foreign film, which do you prefer to use?
Do you like watching the film in its original language with subtitles, or would you rather it be dubbed into English or whatever your first language may be?

I definitely prefer subbed.
If I'm watching a film in bed I'd need my glasses to see so I'd be more likely to watch it dubbed if there's the option, but subbed is my preference.
I watched The Platform with both, and subbed works better with the acting. The old dude sounds too "posh" in the dub, which in some ways makes him creepier because of the dissonance from what he's saying, but he sounds more gross with the original audio.

100% subbed for me!
Having it dubbed just sounds too unnatural and takes away a lot from the final product.

Dubbed because I'm lazy and my eyes aren't the best

There are few things that can put me off a film more than the voices not matching up with the actors' mouths. Subtitles are absolutely fine, I sometimes even have them on English films/TV.

Does anyone else get this:
once you're used to it, you don't even consciously "know" that you're reading? The words just snap into your head, and you know what's being said?
I don't know if that makes sense :joker:

Subbed. I avoid anything with dubbing.

I prefer to hear the original feelings and intonation in the voices, so I prefer subbed.

Not only do I prefer subtitles... I actually can't watch things that are dubbed. It's pretty much always just awful... The voice acting quality is usually poor... And you don't get the essence of the scene at all. It can totally ruin some films tbh. My father in law revealed that he watched "Dark" on Netflix dubbed and I was nearly SICK. The show is so... German. The whole atmosphere, the aesthetic... It just doesn't work at all dubbed into English.
The same goes for the more recent "Marianne" (French). It only works properly in French. Je Suis Mariaaaannneeee etc. Does anyone else get this:

I don't know if that makes sense :joker:Yep, the first film I noticed that with was "City of God" (Brazilian film, which EVERYONE should watch if they haven't already). I got totally immersed and I suddenly realised at the end of the film that it had been in Portuguese... But when I remembered scenes I could "hear" them in English! :umm2: bizarre.

I think they should be made to use perfectly good English, so lazy. We really should not pander to them.
That Platform film was in Portuguese!!, it's commercial suicide and surely there are out of work English actors who could do with the work...??

I'm watching Money Heist atm which is Spanish but it's dubbed and honestly the dubbing, imo adds to the charm of it

If it's live action, always subbed because dubs always destroys the original actor's performance because there's always a disconnect between the voice and the actor.
When it comes to animation, I don't mind either way.

I agree about animation, I don't mind if it's translated or subbed. It's not really "dubbed" if it's in English anyway... it's just a different voice acting performance.
That said - it does depend on the quality. In anime the Japanese voice acting is usually great but the English versions... as with games... it depends how much they've been willing to spend. It can be great, or it can be cheap (and show it).
