It was within 5km of where he's staying, we're allowed meet up in groups in 4 and it was himself, his partner, and two friends. So no he wasn't breaking the rules.

He didn't though. That story was false. Him and his partner met friends from another household while socially distant outside, which isn't against the Irish rules

It's funny you would title the thread "breaking and flouting lockdown" considering you seemed pretty sure there weren't any rules yesterday? If Cummings didn't break any, then this chap certainly didn't.

Not really the point being made, if Cummings didn't break lockdown guidance then this guy certainly didn't break Ireland's guidance. But if that's the excuse you're telling yourself for your ridiculously hypocritical attitude.

Hypocritical Irish PM tells his people not to picnic during lockdown, then sunbathes bare-chested while picnicking
https://www.rt.com/op-ed/489809-irish-pm-picnic-lockdown/amp/
because it was only a week ago that the assistant secretary of the Department of the Taoiseach told a media briefing: “If you’re visiting a public amenity, try not to stay too long at the site or have picnics. Please do your exercise and then go home.”
By ignoring his own government’s guidelines, the PM’s cavalier approach to the lockdown is very much a condescending case of do as I say, not as I do. If nothing else, he was being a pompous, elitist fool and setting a bad example that will only encourage others to ignore the rules.

Brendan O’Neill, a columnist for Spiked Online observed while discussing the differential noted that he was not particularly bothered by either supposed scandal, but asserted that the double standard in media coverage of the two incidents was a result of the different political positions the two men hold.
While Varadkar has enjoyed prominence and favourable over to his position as a media darling as the anti-Brexit, first openly homosexual PM of the Republic of Ireland, Mr Cummings has long been a target for the media establishment for his role in the Vote Leave campaign in 2016, which helped secure the Brexit referendum.

The Austrian PM as well...
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen apologized Sunday after he and his wife were caught by police breaking curfew rules at a restaurant.
The country has mandated that restaurants and bars shut down by 11 p.m. as a coronavirus prevention measure, but police told the Kronen Zeitung that the couple still had drinks at their table after midnight on Saturday night. The restaurant — which was officially shut down at the time, according to the newspaper — could face a fine of up to €30,000 for breaking the rules.
Van der Bellen said in a statement on Twitter that he had gone out to eat for the first time since lockdown began with his wife and two friends.
“We lost track of the time while chatting and unfortunately overlooked the hour,” he wrote. “I am sincerely sorry. It was a mistake. If the restaurant host suffers any damage from this, I will take responsibility for it.”
Municipal authorities must now decide whether the restaurant faces a pena

I don't know why you're banging on about this LT (well I do but. . .) He didn't break any rules. We are allowed to meet up with people from different households outside since the the 18th, I met up with 3 of my friends outside too last weekend, we even sat on a wall, got coffees and chatted :o

if it's allowed in Ireland like you say Niamh, then it's ok
that Austrian PM is more in the wrong, i guess as i do know that Austria has quite strict lockdown rules (one of the first countries in europe also to go in lockdown as i remember correctly, them besides Denmark)

This story was reported in the press so I don't see why so many people have implied it shouldn't be discussed. Why can't we talk about it on here? I mean we discuss every cop in the USA who discharges a firearm.
We can discuss any news item. Oh, except if we are critical of the Left, because who's got time to read all the cutting replies? There was no thread when Labour MP Stephen Kinnock MP drove from Wales to London for his father's birthday party. I wonder why?

What has American police officers killing people got to do with breaking lockdown...explain the logic that links these two topics.
There was no thread but Kinnock was discussed and there was no support for his actions either. The two situations were very different, Kinnock was not ill, he had no child to palm off on his parents, he did not go sightseeing...
The rules on travelling while you are displaying symptoms are for me what sets the two apart, he has admitted he was ill therefore that is clearly the reason for the anger among the public.
Again you insist on politicising this issue while criticising others who question decisions made.
