View Full Version : Breonna Taylor - 2020

On March 13th 2020, Breonna Taylor was fatally shot several times by Police Officers while executing a narcotics raid of her home. Taylor, who was an African-American emergency room technician, aspired to become a Nurse one day. However, that was tragically cut short due to a false tip off at her home, which lead to a judge signing a search warrant and allowing the police to raid her place of residence. The fact that she was shot at least eight times suggests the police were well aware of their actions and it was more than just an act of recklessness.

It’s sickening to say the least. There’s so many more people who have met the same fate at the hands of the police that it’s almost impossible to give coverage to a single victim

Oscar Grant III was a 22 year old African-American who was shot in the early hours of New Years Day in 2009 by Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Officer, Johannes Mehserle. This occurred when there were reports received about a fight in a train station and several others were detained along with Grant. officer Anthony Pirone struck Grant in the head and forced the unarmed Grant to lie face down on the platform. While Pirone held Grant down in a prone position, Mehserle shot Grant in the back with a pistol. He was rushed to hospital and died later that day. Another sickening, unlawful killing at the hands of the police. These events were later retold in a 2013 movie starring Michael B. Jordan, called Fruitvale Station. A really sad movie and for those who haven’t watched, it’s an emotional one

Sandra Annette Bland (February 7, 1987 – July 13, 2015) was a civil rights activist in Chicago, although she was from Illinois and had held various jobs. She had a degree in agriculture. She was apprehended during a traffic stop by an officer known to stop people for minor infractions in the hope of finding evidence to charge those he stopped. Sandra’s infraction was failure to signal during a lane change, although she had responded to the officer tailgating her at high speed and believed he wished to overtake her to attend to an emergency. Sandra filmed her arrest and later body cam footage found her to be non-aggressive, but challenging the reason she was stopped. She was arrested after being threatened with a taser and a bystander was asked to leave the area after the arresting officer was heard saying ‘Good’ following Sandra informing them she was epileptic. She was arrested for allegedly ‘kicking’ an officer and for being ‘argumentative and uncooperative’. Sandra later told her sister the officer had forced their knee into her back and had slammed her head into the ground.

She was placed in a cell on her own due to an apparent high risk to others. Three days after her arrest, Sandra was found hanged in her cell after apparently committing suicide by hanging herself with a plastic bag. Her loved ones disputed this, saying Sandra had no reason to kill herself, and that the platform she hanged herself from was shorter than she was. It is believed Sandra was already dead in her published mug shot.

She died in April 2011 after spending most of her life in a wheelchair.

Trayvon Benjamin Martin (February 5, 1995 – February 26, 2012) was a 17-year-old African-American teenager from Miami Gardens, who was fatally shot in Sanford by George Zimmerman, an insurance underwriter. This unlawful killing sparked outrage as Zimmerman reported Martin as suspicious to the police. Several minutes later an altercation occurred between the two, which lead to Zimmerman shooting Martin in the chest, killing him.

The shooting of John Crawford III occurred on August 5, 2014. Crawford was a 22-year-old African-American man shot and killed by Beavercreek police officer Sean Williams, in a Walmart store in Beavercreek, Ohio, near Dayton, while holding a BB gun.

Crawford picked up an un-packaged BB/pellet air rifle inside the store's sporting goods section and continued shopping in the store. Another customer, Ronald Ritchie, called 911 claiming that Crawford had been pointing the gun at fellow customers. Security camera footage showed that Crawford was talking on his cellphone and holding the BB gun as he shopped, but at no point did he aim the BB gun at anyone. After the security camera footage was released, Ritchie recanted his statement that led to the fatal shooting and stated, "At no point did he shoulder the rifle and point it at somebody", while maintaining that Crawford was "waving it around". Two officers of the Beavercreek Police arrived at the Walmart shortly after their dispatcher informed them of a "subject with a gun" in the pet supplies area of the store. Sean Williams, one of the two police officers that arrived, shot Crawford in the arm and chest. He was later pronounced dead at Dayton's Miami Valley Hospital.

The shooting of Anthony Hill, a black U.S. Air Force veteran, occurred on March 9, 2015, in Chamblee, Georgia, near Atlanta. Anthony Hill had 7 medals from the US Air Force. He attempted to save children by running into an explosion. Hill, fatally shot by US police officer Robert Olsen, suffered from mental illness and was naked and unarmed at the time of the incident. The incident was covered in local and national press and sparked the involvement of Black Lives Matter and other advocacy groups who demonstrated their anger at the shooting. In January 2016, a grand jury indicted officer Olsen on two counts of felony murder and one count of aggravated assault. Nearing the fourth anniversary of the homicide, it was decided that Olsen's trial would be rescheduled for September 23, 2019, with delays including three successive judges having recused themselves in the case.

Dean and another officer were responding to an early-morning house call after a neighbor became concerned when they noticed the front door of a home, which belonged to Jefferson's mother, was left ajar and requested a welfare check.

Jefferson had been babysitting her 8-year-old nephew inside and playing video games. According to police and body camera footage, Dean failed to identify himself before firing his weapon, striking Jefferson.

The bodycam video released publicly shows the perspective of an officer outside the home, peering into a window using a flashlight and spotting someone inside standing near a window and telling her, "Put your hands up — show me your hands." A single shot is fired seconds later.

To some people who knew him, Michael Brown was an ordinary US teenager with much to like about him.

Court documents, however, portray him as a suspect in a convenience store robbery who assaulted the police officer who killed him.

These two profiles have framed the debate around his death on 9 August, when the black 18-year-old was shot dead by the white officer during an incident on a street in Ferguson, Missouri.

That shooting inflamed passions in Ferguson and across America, stirring up America's debate over race and justice.

School-leaver
In the weeks before his death, Mr Brown's life certainly seemed ordinary.

He had just left secondary school and was planning to study to become a heating and cooling technician.

In his spare time, he played video games, saw friends and spent time with his family.

Protests broke out across the US after the grand jury's decision
On his Facebook page he posted photos of himself with his baby niece.

His friends and family knew the 6ft 4in (1.9 m) teenager as Big Mike or Mike Mike - so big, friends say, they named him twice.

Neighbours at the Northwinds apartment complex where he lived remember him as respectful. "If his grandma said 'go upstairs', he went," Kevin Seltzer told the Los Angeles Times. "He didn't bother people."

Despite his size, Mr Brown is remembered as a gentle giant. By all accounts he shied away from confrontation, using his bulk to intimidate people from fighting with him.

Shortly before his death, at the urging of his grandmother with whom he lived and his uncle the Rev Charles Ewing, he embraced Christianity.

When a New York Times profile described Mr Brown as being "no angel", the comment sparked anger across social media, with people insisting he had only behaved as most teenagers do.

Some of the amateur rapper's songs contained violent lyrics such as "my favourite part is when the bodies hit the ground".

And then on 9 August he allegedly stole a pack of cigarillos from a shop, pushing the store clerk into a display case when confronted.

Shortly after this incident, caught on CCTV, police officer Darren Wilson received an alert in his patrol car.

Stopping Mr Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson for walking in the middle of the road, the policeman grew suspicious that he had carried out the robbery.

Reports vary on the exact details but all say there was an altercation, Mr Wilson's gun was fired and the pair ran.

The body lay in the street for four hours in a pool of blood before it was removed.

On Monday a grand jury ruled that they would not charge Mr Wilson over the shooting.

Mr Brown had received his leaving certificate only eight days before his death and had been due to start college that Monday.

His mother, Lesley McSpadden, told reporters the family had never had the time to celebrate her son's school-leaving. Instead they had had to organise a funeral.

If it's not widespread then why are these stories so common? these are just the high profile ones. I see stories like this every month on my timeline. this is more than just a few bad cops, this is a systemic issue that can't be solved by just locking up a few cops.

Some bad seeds do not make a whole unit racist/unjust/etc. Pretty common sense

There are MILLIONS of cases, THOUSANDS of injustices, and maybe HUNDREDS of unjust deaths. There should not be even ONE injustice or death but that's not something to scrutinize an entire police force over :skull: Those people work tough, intense jobs and so many of them actually do their job right for a lack of appreciation and life-risk of their own.

The outrage makes sense, the deaths are worse, and I'm outraged at George's death too especially when I first found out about it, it was sickening to watch. But that doesn't mean go off the rails and start blaming everyone & everything because some people are still racist & unjust in 2020. The cop who murdered George was an awful pathetic man, any others that ARE involved in these incidents are also awful but not millions of other cops who do right.

This largely comes down to whether you believe the actions against POC in the country warrant a political protest. You don’t seem to think so, partly because you don’t see it as an example of institutional racism, just a few individuals doing wrong. I think every unjust killing merits political and civil denunciation and I’m unsure why you happen to feel different.
