The only thing that concerns me is how many resources from this game will be used in the RE4 remake
But yeah, it looks fantastic. I'm a bit saddened that Capcom have said that it's more action-y since I think RE's recent renaissance came from a return to horror in RE7 and 2 and I hope they don't stray too far from horror again but everything about that trailer was intriguing. I imagine the more supernatural elements will alienate the fans that are determined to hate RE7 but I really like it especially since you know that it's all going to be psychological rather than supernatural.

Tbf Resident Evil in it's inception has always blended Action with Horror, Resi 8 is just going back to the first 3 & Code Veronica's style in a more modern format by the sound of things.
And about the players that will hate the Supernatural elements of the story, I never understand why people pick a Game with Zombies and all sorts of other monsters if they don't want that kinda element in their Video Games?:joker:
And for me personally I love all of the Resident Evil Games that I've played, even 5 & 6 as they're well made Games still imo, even if the Horror content in them are incredibly low.

I agree on 5, I still think its a fun game and I enjoyed it a lot at the time... It just isn't actually scary at all, but otherwise I think it's a good game.
6... I think has design and pacing problems that go beyond that and make it a definite dip in quality for the series. It has some sections that are great, but far too many that aren't.
Scarlett.

I really enjoyed Resident Evil 5, despite the fact it was completely action, it was still well-made and had fun modes. RE6 was... disappointing, it threw too many things at the wall, and none of them stuck.
After 6, they needed to dial everything back, I really enjoyed RE7's more local scenario, instead of a worldwide threat, it was a more personal story.

I agree with your assessment on 5.
My biggest issue with 6 personally was sometimes playing the same levels out with different characters, I remember the boss fight on the rooftop where I had to take it on in both Jake & Chris's mode which was deeply frustrating.
I did really enjoy Leon & Jake's modes overall though, and Ada's bonus mode was great I thought.

I think what Resi 7 benefited from was having a brand new protagonist as it gave the franchise a more fresh perspective I think which was needed in the franchise.

I agree Scarlett.
I would imagine so, because the events in his first Game will have probably toughened him up for his second Game I reckon.
And it looks like Ethan and Chris weren't fully seeing eye to eye on one of the trailers too which is interesting to me.

The showcase outside of the Village stuff was utter dirge but Village is looking excellent. RE7 for me, was a top tier RE game, and so I'm excited to see what they do next. I'm planning on getting a PS5 sometime in April so this game will be a Day 1 purchase when it's released a while later.

I think I believe Capcom said at some point that Chris trains Ethan between the games, so that's why Ethan seems a lot more capable this time around.

I have STILL never finished Resi 7 :joker:. I might plough through it for the story on PC, throw an infinite ammo trainer on it or something so I can just blitz through... I was enjoying the story more than the gameplay. I'm not actually the biggest fan of the switch to first person, I wish they'd gone back to Over The Shoulder like the REmakes.

Good luck :joker: I've all but given up hope, they're being scalped by shopping bots... it'll be impossible to get one until the market is saturated. Might be OK by April I guess!
Honestly at this point if big PS5 exclusives start coming out I might just pay over the odds :worry:. I hate enabling scalpers though.
I might buy one from a scalper then petition it on eBay, put a crack in the plastic on the back or summat (purely cosmetic) and then ask for a partial refund :hehe:.

There was a PS4 gameplay video released a few days back.
I63jgpg7-hw
It doesn't look like a massive downgrade from the next gen footage we've seen so it'll probably be an option if you don't have a PS5 by then, plus I think they've already said a free upgrade will be included so you'll be able to upgrade when you do.
As for getting a PS5, my advice would be to watch out for Argos, I got mine from there and it was pretty easy, plus they offer same day delivery for like £3.

Likely differences will be lower framerate and fewer/lesser lighting effects; we're only in "early days" new console territory, the devs take a while to catch up and we won't see the full potential of the PS5 for another couple of years.
As far as I can tell it's just the exact same flavour of RE Engine as Resi 7 so if you were happy enough with how that looked/played on PS4, this is going to run exactly the same. On PS5 it'll be the same but with a few extra bells and whistles. We won't see big differences on the PS5 until games are being built for next-gen game engines (so probably no last-gen version at all).

One thing you have to watch with that is that not every game has transferrable saves when you upgrade from PS4 to PS5... it's hit and miss, some have it and some you'd need to start again from the beginning. Also trophies don't transfer between versions (if such things are important to you) so if you get say 30% of a game's trophies on PS4, then the other 70% after transferring the save to PS5, you won't get 100%/the platinum... you'll have to replay the start of the game to get the other 30% of the trophies.

I'd like to see them do Outbreak in the style of the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, but I was very fond of Resistance. It's a real shame they didn't try to sustain it. They definitely should have released a version of it separate from RE3 at some point and tried to turn it into a free to play game. It would have done quite well since the core concept of it was very fun.

The Village part of the demo was quite good, it felt very brief but it was an interesting taster. I'm looking forward to the Castle Demo.
Speaking of which, IGN have confirmed that Lady D and her daughters will actually take the role of Mr. X styled stalker enemies that will patrol the castle in real time while you're going about exploring it.

Mehhh I hope it's not constant. Like it's fun in places but I do also like being able to explore areas unharassed and take them in, it's becoming a bit of a "thing" to trade the ability to do that in Resi for the "constant threat of a scary" which in my opinion stops the story from ebbing and flowing like it should. Constant tension just becomes "the norm" which makes it all LESS tense... you need more straightforward sections to make the "highs" actually high.
Tom4784
20-04-2021, 03:04 PM
It'll be like Mr. X, I expect, they'll be active at parts but other times you'll be fighting Lycans and those zombie creatures. I was expecting Capcom to treat her like they did with Nemesis in the remake and make her and her daughters part of set pieces rather than a constant threat.
From the clips of the recently revealed previews that I've seen, I don't think they'll be constant pursuers like Mr. X was in the police station. It sounds like they might patrol around certain areas and part of the gameplay in the castle will be drawing their attention elsewhere so you can solve puzzles and such.

The one mixed review I’ve seen said too actiony (they all say there’s more of an action element than 7, and a plot history thing mentions that Chris has been giving Ethan military training)) but that’s not a negative for me to be honest, I found the balance in 7 a bit too “hide and seeky” for my liking, Resi always had big gunz. It made it feel too much like a different game series.

All the horror based RE games eventually become action-y, RE7 was pretty much the only one that didn't. Things don't tend to scare you that much when you've got a shotgun, a bazooka, automatic weapons and enough of an ammo stockpile to use them freely.
I have heard that there's supposed to be one extremely scary part though, which I'm interested in seeing as, judging from what Capcom has said about her, I think it's probably gonna have a lot to do with the lady with the creepy doll.

Are you guys on Virgin Media by any chance? I've had similar issues and VM had to replace the router a few times in the past.
I got rid of Sky and switched to Plusnet and it’s been utter garbage. For a start they only give me 32mb (minimum guaranteed 29) saying the line can’t do more, when I was getting a solid 44mb (minimum 35) for 3 years with Sky. And now it’s just totally packed in. I suspect it is the router because it’s cheap trash and they couldn’t find a fault with the line. I’d buy a decent 3rd party one (because at least, unlike Sky, they do let you use your own router) but I’m hesitant in case that’s not the issue. If they end up sending me a new router and it fixes it, I’ll probably upgrade to a better one.
Honestly wish I hadn’t switched... Sky was a rip-off because I don’t use telly but I can count on one hand the number of brief connection issues I had in 3 years... and never a major issue like this . The wireless signal was abysmal but bad wireless is better than bad internet full stop!

I've got into the castle and met the big lady herself. I'm really loving it so far, It's not been scary at all really, I felt a bit nervous with the lycans at the beginning but so far it's not really put me on edge like RE2R or RE7 did.

Personally I'd say 6 was a bit of a "blip", I loved RE5 despite its flaws, they just took it too far with 6. I mean yeah it had its issues - a big one being that having a constant companion ALWAYS makes a game distinctly un-scary ... I guess similar to how walking down a country lane in the pitch dark isn't that scary with a friend but ****-your-pants terrifying alone :umm2:. Being armed like Duke Nukem didn't exactly add to the tension also. It was a bit goofy but it was still tonnes of fun IMO. Resi 6 was just over-long and ... not really fun at all.

Resi 5 is my least favourite RE game. It's decent enough with a friend but aggravating alone and it just didn't feel like RE at all. RE6 has the benefit of having some good moments to it, but I found RE5 to be a bland experience from beginning to end.

Very similar vibes to the Resi 4 las plagas villager attack (I suspect it was a deliberate throwback to that, right down to the ending, Resi 4 bell ringing and Resi 8 summoning from the castle). On playthrough 1 it was about evading and surviving, playthrough 2 you can easily fight back, and by playthrough 3 it's a massacre :joker:. It can actually end with you killing all of the villagers rather than timing out.

i’m shocked lady D died so soon i thought she was the main antagonist :skull:
She was thought to be the main antagonist until Miranda was mentioned, and then a few weeks before launch, Capcom detailed the four lords which strongly hinted at the fact that Lady D wouldn't be around for the whole game. Still, she was a bit of a queen for the screen time she had :clap1:

You better ready your knickers for the next part though, I'm not gonna say anything about it since I wouldn't dream of spoiling it but yea. You'll see what I mean when you get through it though.

I'm loving the various Resi 4 references scattered throughout - I got a little nostalgic chuckle when The Duke feigned a gruff voice and said "What are ya buyin'?"

The duke serves CEX
he’ll buy a gun off you for 20,000 then try to sell it back to you for 70,000

I was shaken to the core when I first met him and had maybe 6k or something and I spent 1k on "shotgun shells" expecting a BOX of shells and it was... one shell!
But to be fair, income does pick up dramatically in the castle, you get scraps and pennies in that first village section.

i swear the miranda boss fight is literally impossible on hardcore
I have like 18 shotgun ammo/20 sniper ammo/90 handgun ammo/5 mines/2 med kit things and not enough resources to craft anything else :worry:
I’ve got past the bit where the room turns black and she starts lunging at you but can’t get any further

Idk how but I somehow managed to miss the merchant/save room the entire time during the Lady D part. I really thought they were cutting back on saves to make it harder :skull:

I didn’t find beneviento scary, as soon as they take your gunz you know all of the scares will be scripted events/“running away” so it’s just not that scary. That said, I’m playing through with my wife so maybe being “not alone” makes it less scary.
We just finished the factory so I assume are very near the end.

The scripted stuff isn't what makes it scary, plus if you're playing on your own with headphones on, it really ups the effect that house has. It's when things DON'T happen that Beneviento's at it's most terrifying. When you first arrive at the house and it's all silent and unassuming, every time you solve a puzzle and the basement changes a little, and the worst part was the Well room. It's just tension on top of tension. When Ethan turned around to descend the ladder, I thought the Mia doll would be standing there looking at him, and then nothing happened and then when you got to the bottom only to not be jumpscared but to have the sound of a baby crying until you exit, to find that everything is dark and doused with a red light? I literally had to take a break. The baby monster was nothing, all the 'big moments' weren't a bother, but the slow building tension and the fact they eschewed jumpscares throughout to cultivate a genuine sense of fear and dread? A+

Finished last night :hee: easily the best Resi game since 4.
Had enough CP for infinite dragoon, plan is to do another run or two to get enough for infinite ammo for grenade launcher and Wolfsbane plus all the food buffs and then take a run at Village of Shadows...
I reckon hard will be a cakewalk with Dragoon and Grenade Launcher...

Was it just lack of ammo that got you? Because there's a bit where she makes a sort of energy ball above her head as an attack and you can shoot it and it explodes and does huge damage. I didn't know that until after I finished the game!
Apparently it is TECHNICALLY possible to beat her using just a knife. Lolz. Probably not without all the health/guarding buffs and the speed buff though.

Yeah coz i only had 2 med things and sniper/shotgun/handgun ammo  didn’t have any magnum ammo and didn’t have the resources to craft explosive rounds

But i think if i had the health buffs i would have managed it
The only health buff i got was the slight increase coz i didn’t know where to find the juicy game (until i googled it later but after you enter the factory you can’t go back into the village)
I had so much fun playing on hardcore though like every enemy encounter was really tense
I think where i slipped up was in the factory i literally killed every single enemy when i was going back to the casting mold etc... but most of the enemies in the factory are completely avoidable
So that’s why i ended up with not enough ammo/meds/resources

I did find that the factory siphoned away an absolute tonne of ammo and resources, literally right before the final bosses - I don't know if that's intentional or not. I had a boatload of handgun ammo and not much else... used all of my shotgun ammo an explosives against propellerhead.

In case anyone hasn’t realised yet - you can cheese some of the challenge points so easily :joker:
First off the crafting ones - you can just keep reloading. Load a save where you have plenty of crafting supplies, craft stuff (say 10 items), quit, reload, craft the same 10 items... they all count. Just reload until you get master survivalist
Cat Burglar the same. Save near a lock that needs picked, keep reloading and picking the lock.
Poacher - same near some animals.
Butcher
Executioner
Pew Pew
Boom Stick
Sharp Shooter
Fire in the Hole
30 Big Holes
Dakka Dakka
Pineapple Ace
Mind Your Step
So long as you have a decent stock of ammo for each gun/explosives, you can reload either the village wolf attack or the wolf stronghold section repeatedly and get ALL of these in no time. Just quit and reload when the ammo for the one you’re getting runs dry...
I’m not sure if this is intentional because it makes a tonne of the challenges ridiculously easy but

Mercenaries is also quite fun, just got my first S (village). HOW you get SS or SSS I have no idea since I’m not losing my combo streak at all and being as fast as humanly possible to get the S?
It’s not a patch on Resi 4 mercenaries though.

Does anyone else think they’re gonna do a DLC with the duke as a boss fight
Tom4784
29-05-2021, 07:22 PM
Probably not, I don't think they've done any meaningful RE DLC since 7, and I don't think any were mentioned in the big leak they suffered a while back.
My guess is that they'll move on and we'll get an official announcement about the RE4 remake or 'Outrage' in about 5 months or so.

Nah I think he’s supposed to be a parallel with The Merchant from 4 (he even mentions him being “an old friend”) so I think their allegiances and motivations are essentially supposed to be unknown... they are eternal fence-sitters who aren’t really on either side. I’d assume we’ll see other merchants in future games and they eventually might dig into the lore of the link between them as a group and maybe their intentions.
Also The Duke’s shop is part of the Mercenaries game mechanic so it would be odd to have you fight/kill him and then still trade with him in that mode.
Scarlett.

Just dropped 8 achievements in one speedrun . Knives-only casual speedrun, finished in 2hrs 46min.
https://i.imgur.com/gqbi894.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/rkfj1zF.jpg
In the order above,
- Use 4 or less healing items (I only used 2)
- Finish in under 3 hours
- Spend less than 10,000 lei (I didn't even open the shop)
- Knife only, no gunz
- Craft no items
- Don't organise your inventory at all
- Finish 3 playthroughs (this was my third - Standard, Hardcore, this speedrun)
- "Overachiever" is for getting 70+ achievements, the other 7 took me to 74 :hee:.
I also got the "beat Heisenberg in under 4 minutes" achievement on this run too, he's pretty soft on Casual and you still get to use the little tank thing, as an exception to the "knives out" rule.

Did the “Kill Moreau in under 1 minute” achievement on casual using a fully upgraded infinite ammo WCX assault rifle... he dropped in less than one full clip, it can literally only have been 5 to 10 seconds, making it hilarious, and totally on brand for the character :joker:. “Raaaarrrr I’m gonna kill y- oh no I died.”

Moreau was such a disappointment, they could have done so much with his section, but it all felt like an afterthought. I can only imagine his section was one of the last ones to be finalised since it's such a downgrade from the others.

No... and they're three different guys :joker:. One in the village, one in the wolf stronghold, then a 3rd you fight as Chris. The concept art makes it clear that they're different fellers (the first one was the village chief, the second his brother... I'm not sure who the 3rd was meant to be).
Heisenberg just looks like a normal guy, but he has X-men magneto powers, then mutates into that massive Megatron thing.

I do get similar vibes for that section; during the knife-only speedrun I did the whole section in 7 minutes . And that's with the boss fight taking about 2 mins 30 because of only using the knife, and having to dodge enemies for the boat key... if you blast those out the way with a shotgun and use upgraded weapons against the boss I reckon you could clear the whole section start to finish in 5 mins.
For comparison, the castle took 25 mins and the factory 30+. You can do the house pretty fast on a speedrun but that's because it's puzzly and once you know the solutions you can skip half of the puzzling.
Also all three other sections are significantly longer if you watch the cutscenes... the reservoir only has like 2 very short ones.
