it's been banned due to them using images of the Jamie Bulger child murder apparantly. .. if its true, its a bit sick, to say the least.

Video game pulled over Bulger image
Tuesday, June 19, 2007
A computer game which appears to show a CCTV image of murdered toddler James Bulger being abducted has been withdrawn from sale.

His mother, Denise Fergus, complained to the manufacturers of Law and Order: Double or Nothing about the game which she criticised as "sick".

The photograph features as a background image on a noticeboard for the game which is based on the US TV series of the same name which is broadcast in the UK.

It has a striking similarity with the footage captured at the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Merseyside, which was the last sighting of the two-year-old before he was led to his death by his killers Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.

Ms Fergus, 37, wrote to Global Software demanding that the offending image be removed. She complained the game dehumanised the memory of her son and that he was being treated as if he was public property. She had only become recently aware of the game, which was first published in 2003.

The California-based developer of Law and Order: Double of Nothing, Legacy Interactive, is reported to have apologised for any distress caused and said the photograph would be removed from future copies. The game has been withdrawn from sale by its UK distributor Global Software.

Chris Johnson, a spokesman for Ms Fergus, told BBC Radio Merseyside: "It is something she feels strongly about, that images of James should not be used and abused in this way as if he is some kind of public property.

"It is as if it dehumanises James and it seems like his death enters into some kind of myth or legend. To her it is very real and an ever-present emotion that she lives with every day of her life."

Thompson and Venables, both aged 10 at the time, lured James away from his mother while she was shopping in 1993. They walked him to a railway line and battered him to death with bricks and an iron bar, then left his body on the track to be cut in half.

After being convicted of murder, the pair spent eight years in youth custody before being released in 2001 with new identities.

Game axed over ultra sadism

AN ULTRA-violent computer game based on a murder spree has been banned from shops.

Manhunt 2 was rejected by the British Board of Film Classification because of its “casual sadism”.

A spokesman said: “It constantly encourages visceral killing” with “unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying”.

The game involves a psychiatric patient who goes on a killing rampage. It is the first time since 1997 that a violent video game has been banned.

The parents of tragic 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah believe the first Manhunt game inspired killer Warren LeBlanc, 17, to stab their son to death.

Stefan’s mum Giselle said: “I am absolutely elated at this decision. Manhunt represents a genre of games that are not fit for public consumption. The imagery they depict is of human suffering and violence. It is brutality for brutality’s sake.”

David Cooke, director of the BBFC, said: “There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.”

Manhunt 2 never reached shops, and the BBFC ruling means it cannot be released in its current form.

Manufacturers Rockstar Games have six weeks to appeal.

Despite the ban, copies of Manhunt 2 were last night up for sale at £27.99 on the eBay auction website.

Although illegal to supply the game in the UK, it will not be illegal to possess it, meaning gamers can buy it abroad or via an overseas website.

Ok..... if it has images of Jamie Bulger being lead away this is in very poor taste and is disgusting.

However, violence has been around since humans have.

Violent video games do not cause murders.... its the people playing the game that do this. I have been playing violent games for many years and I have never gone out and hurt of murdered someone.

There are far more violent films on the market..... natural born killers, hostel, audition, itchie the killer..... ultra violent films in which graphic scenes of murder, slaughter and pure evil is shown. Yet these are in our cinemas and homes in some of our dvd collections.

My personal view on violent games is that it is catharcism

Rockstar responds to 'Manhunt 2' decision

Wednesday, June 20 2007, 09:55 BST

By David Gibbon, Gaming Reporter
In reponse to the BBFC's decision to ban the release of Manhunt 2 in the UK, Rockstar Games has said it is "disappointed" with the decision.

The Grand Theft Auto publisher has stated it disagrees with the ban, claiming adults should be allowed to make up their own minds about a game.

A statement from the company read: "We are disappointed with the recent decision by the British Board of Film Classification to refuse classification of Manhunt 2. While we respect the authority of the classification board and will abide by the rules, we emphatically disagree with this particular decision.

"Manhunt 2 is an entertainment experience for fans of psychological thrillers and horror. The subject matter of this game is in line with other mainstream entertainment choices for adult consumers.

"We respect those who have different opinions about the horror genre and videogames as a whole, but we hope they will also consider the opinions of the adult gamers for whom this product is intended.

"We believe all products should be rated to allow the public to make informed choices about the media and art they wish to consume.

"The stories in modern videogames are as diverse as the stories in books, film and television. The adult consumers who would play this game fully understand that it is fictional interactive entertainment and nothing more."

Manhunt 2 was refused a rating by the BBFC after the board said that "to issue a certificate would involve a range of unjustifiable risks, to both adults and minors".
More

exactley adults should be aloud to play it

Re: Manhunt 2 banned

Games should not be banned for being "over violent". I watch things on TV and at the cinema which are violent, and it doesn't make me a sadistic killer. I am aware of the difference between fantasy and reality.

If the concern is for young people playing these games, then I think that has to be down to the individual parents. If irresponsible parents allow their children to watch or play unsuitable games or films, then we (the rest of the adult population) should not be penalised for that. What's next? Ban drink and cigs because of the underage smoking and drinking problem?

I don't agree with living in a "nanny state" where someone else decides what is and isn't suitable for me to see or play.

Re: the Jamie Bulger footage in the Law & Order game

That was in poor taste and was completely unnecessary. I fail to see how any "real" crime footage is necessary in a game. Fictional scenes can be created just as easily.

Absolutely agree. The problem with this country is that a lot of parents aren't doing their job and then when the kids go off the rails the govt. look for someone else to blame.

The problem this game had was that it will always be linked to the murder of Stefan Pakeerah even the game was never linked to the murder in the trial.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/3934277.stm

One thing that is never mentioned is that the murdered kid (14) was the one who owned the game. it's all very well the perants campaign for games like this to be banned, but get your own house in order. Why did your son have an 18 game in the first place?

I'm particularly disappointed with this decision. In fact I announced how much I was looking forward to this game in this thread

http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=58089

Now that the game has been banned it will gain even more notoriety and be probably going for 70-80 quid on e-bay. That is what happened to the original Manhunter game.

I do not support Manhunt but i feel as though it should be released because Hostel 2 is being released and that shows people being tortured and has been described as 'torture porn'. I feel that violence towards pixels is a lot less worrying then the violence portrayed in the hostel films and other films like it..
