Sunak to unveil £2bn home insulation scheme

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EcVSB_1WkAQgTpH?format=png&name=small

[Hundreds of thousands of homeowners
will receive vouchers of up to £5,000 for
energy-saving home improvements,
with the poorest getting up to £10,000.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is due to set
out a £2bn grant scheme in England for
projects such as insulation as part of a
wider £3bn plan to cut emissions.]

[The Treasury said the grants could help to
support more than 100,000 jobs.
Labour said renters appeared to be left
out and called for a "broader and bigger"
plan to cut carbon emissions.
Under the Green Homes Grant, the government
will pay at least two-thirds of the cost
of home improvements that save energy,
the Treasury said.
The Conservative manifesto had
pledged £9.2bn for improving the energy
efficiency of low income housing and public buildings.
Shadow business secretary Ed Miliband welcomed
the plan but stressed that it was not "comprehensive".]

[It was revealed last month that
Mr Sunak is considering a temporary VAT cut
to get the high street back on its feet - something
that's been called for by trade body
the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
Businesses would also be able to defer
their VAT spending for another three months,
under the economic blueprint.

Some report that a six-month VAT cut could
also be on the cards for pubs, restaurants,
hotels and other in the hospitality industry.

VAT currently stands at 20 per cent.]

Renters being left out, surely installing insulation is a bigger job than someone can have done to their rental home? Like, having different doors out in, decorators, and gardeners is fine, but structural things should be down to the landlord?

The job placements scheme will be useless as it only serves for free labour for companies with no incentive for them to take on jobseekers beyond their placement and plus jobseekers will inevitably do more work then they are getting paid for on universal credit.

You've also got the issue that such schemes always impede jobseeking efforts as it makes jobseekers less flexible in when they can interview and such and it gives them less time to actually job search.

Schemes like these exist only to make employment stats look better as you know they'll count people on these placements as being in work.

[VAT cut for some sectors from 20% to 5%
Sunak says it's important to get the hospitality
sector "bustling again" while making
sure we "enjoy summer safely".
"At the moment, VAT on hospitality and
tourism is charged at 20%.
So I’ve decided, for the next six months, to cut VAT on food, accommodation and attractions," he adds.

"Eat-in or hot takeaway food from restaurants,
cafes and pubs, accommodation
in hotels, B&Bs, campsites and caravan sites,
attractions like cinemas, theme parks and zoos.

"All these and more will see VAT reduced,
from next Wednesday until
January 12th, from 20% to 5%."]

£10 per person discount as part of
'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme
Sunak says his final measure has
"never been tried before in the UK" but that in
August, meals eaten at any participating
business - from Monday to Wednesday - will be 50% off,
up to a maximum discount of £10 per head for everyone,
including children.

Businesses will need to register, and can
do so through a simple website,
open next Monday, he adds.

Each week in August, businesses can
then claim the money back, with the funds
in their bank account within five working days.]

I didn't say that homeowners are rich - I said the people who are struggling the most are not property owners. Yes, mortgage payments are often lower than rent, but you need a half-decent income to secure a mortgage in the first place. Owning property isn't even on the radar for people who are unemployed or insecurely/intermittently employed, or for those on disability unless they have another source of income.

I think he's struck on paper a reasonable continuance of what's in place and done as much as possible, to strike a balance of looking to build the economy again.

If that needs to be done at this particular time, is debatable.

I fear there's a reigning in of him now starting to rear it's head.
Rishi Sunak for me has done really well so far.

Personally, I remain more concerned on the lives and health of people.
I don't think a price should be put on that.

As with budgets from all Parties.
A lot sounds good on the surface.
The presentation was certainly very good.
However the detail, maybe less so.
I doubt this will make much difference thoughI hope it will, however also doubt 'real ' jobs will be saved for long.

Also though, Labour needs to now to offer an alternative.
Personally, my thoughts are this is designed to just get people out and spending.
At this time, with the virus still claiming hundreds of lives a week.
With still no adequate testing really being done.

This budget and its plans may be premature.

More safety, security and still the help in place, is needed.
As they said in March.
No one should be penalised for doing the right thing.

I hope this Chancellor still now will battle on with that stance, no matter the pressures from his Party's other sources.

joeysteele

I'd also like to add.
How I wish Rishi Sunak was in fact the PM in this government.

I think he represents the better side of the Tory party at present.
Him dictating overall policy, would be much more welcome to me.

You've far more faith in Johnson than I ever will for sure.

Johnson, in my view, has gone along with Sunak's plans, at times seeming to not even know what they were.

He had to rely on a more compassionate approach once this pandemic hit.

I think Sunak is much more his own person.
He knows what was necessary and was given the free reign, for the present.

If you really believe Chancellor's and PMs aren't at odds with each other, you're mistaken.
Governments are riddled with Chancellors at odds with the Leaders and Cabinets.

Tony Blair desperately wanted to join the Euro.
His Chancellor Gordon Brown flatly refused.

Geoffrey Howe, even came to be at odds with Thatcher.

I doubt Johnson, deep down, has ever wanted to see done what's already been done by Sunak.
I still believe Sunak will eventually be reigned in.

arista, what are your thoughts may I ask.
On Sunak.
Do you see a move here to get him seen as a Leader.
I personally do.

There's those in the Tory party who wish he was now.

This pandemic has given him a status, that may have been impossible for past Chancellors.

You are a more balanced usually CON supporter.
I'm just curious would Sunak be a choice of yours.

For me, he does seem to have really grasped mood and need in this pandemic.

As for the above however, it seems that lady isn't that impressed.
