The coronavirus pandemic has increased the spread of dangerous conspiracy theories in Britain, the U.K. government’s Commission for Countering Extremism (CCE) warned.

According to a report published by the CCE on Thursday, the pandemic has increased the visibility of anti-vaccine, anti-5G and anti-minority conspiracy theories, and spurred the proliferation of extremism.

The report highlighted a 21 percent increase in hate crime toward East Asian and South East Asian individuals in the U.K. since the pandemic started, and “a worrying rise” in hate crime and incidents targeting Chinese people. According to the report, far-right individuals have also encouraged others to deliberately infect Jews and Muslims with the virus.

Extremists have “fully exploited the lockdown to promote dangerous conspiracy theories and disinformation, most notably online,” said Lead Commissioner Sara Khan in a statement. “They seek to mainstream extremist narratives in society, for the sole purpose of inciting hatred … and a breakdown in community cohesion.”

The CCE said a false social media post accusing Muslims of flouting lockdown rules was shared 2,700 times, while social media companies didn’t take action on over 90 percent of posts containing misinformation after volunteers flagged them.

The short and long term impacts of the pandemic could create conditions conducive for extremism,” the report warns. “Extremists will seek to capitalize on the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 to cause further long term instability, fear and division in Britain

The report also warned that funding cuts to youth services “may result in younger people becoming more vulnerable to extremist narratives, and it is also making it less likely that risk factors would be noticed,” adding that the U.K.’s coronavirus lockdown “has proved challenging to those delivering counter-extremism interventions.”

The CCE called on the government to include clear plans to counter extremism in its response to the pandemic and in future crises, and to publish a new counter-extremism strategy.Disgusting but not surprising, some people use any excuse to push their racist agenda

like one member said on dutch forum, who's quite sick and tired of the whole ''far left, far right'' thing (apparently one racist gesture been banned from a call of duty game also what extremists want in their views of PC world)

either centre left, centre right are good if everyone can one of those 2 but no more extremism in the world, is what we all can dream of

Imagine jumping to the defense of the far right just because it has 'right' in it's name. So weird.

Oh shut up, the thread starter found one mention of the far right in the whole story and posted it due to that one rather far fetched claim about infecting Jews and muslims...

All the other incidents neither mention left or right...but nobody better dare blame the left for any off it eh!!!

I'm sure there are some far right idiots who think all that stuff and probably try to spread hate and plan nasty things  but they're more likely typing from their mother's basement before jacking it to hentai rather than being an actual threat.

The first three rude words you've pathetically used to myself in your response above.
I will respectively ask you to possibly apply to yourself since you choose to use them.

Extremely rude.

Did it though? BLM made themselves look like morons, but I doubt Joe Average bears any ill will toward Rayquan Average for the negatives happening during the protests.

BLM is only a 'bad thing' if you value property over black lives and if you're a hypocrite that will defend the police by making out that the corruption is just from 'a few bad apples' while simultaneously judging a whole movement by some looters.

We're not in the 1940s, while some things need to change it's not as bad as things were back then, and then same tactics don't need to be employed. Vandalism and violence is going to make the police force hire and train better staff.
