BEIRUT (Reuters) - A huge explosion near the centre of Beirut killed at least 10 people, injured hundreds and sent shockwaves across the Lebanese capital, shattering windows and causing apartment balconies to collapse, witnesses and security sources said.

The most powerful explosion to hit Beirut in years shook the ground, leaving some residents thinking an earthquake had struck. Dazed and weeping, some of them wounded, people walked through streets checking to see if relatives were hurt.

The blast occurred in the city's port area, where there were warehouses housing explosives, Lebanon's state news agency NNA and two security sources said. A third security source said there were chemicals stored in the area.

Footage of the blast shared by residents on social media showed a column of smoke rising from the port district followed by an enormous blast. Those filming what initially appeared to be a big blaze were thrown backwards by the shock of the explosion.

At least 10 bodies were taken to hospitals, a security source and a medical source told Reuters. The Lebanese Red Cross said hundreds of people were taken hospitals for treatment.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun called for an emergency meeting of the country's Supreme Defence Council, according to the presidency's Twitter account.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze that set off the blast or what kind of explosives were in the warehouses.

Beirut: At least 50 killed and thousands injured after huge explosion in Lebanese capital...

At least 50 people have been killed and 2,700 more injured in a huge explosion in the Lebanese capital Beirut, according to the country's health minister.

The prime minister has called it a "big catastrophe" and vowed for those responsible to pay the price for what has happened.

George Kettan, head of Lebanon's Red Cross, added there are victims "everywhere - in all the streets and areas near and far" from the blast.

Footage posted on social media showed the moment a building several storeys high exploded, sending a vast shockwave across the city that was heard and felt as far away as Cyprus - more than 200km (180 miles) away.

Pictures also showed a scene of devastation with cars upturned and emergency crews gathered around the gutted building.

The explosion appeared to be centred around the city's port area containing warehouses, and rippled through several areas of the capital.

Lebanon's internal security chief Abbas Ibrahim said it happened in a building containing highly-explosive materials, according to news agency NNA. Earlier reports had suggested the building was a fireworks storage warehouse.

Witnesses said a number of people were injured during the widespread destruction across the city, with residents reporting collapsed ceilings and shattered windows.

A huge column of smoke was seen rising over the city following the explosion.

Wounded people were seen on the ground near Beirut's port, according to a photographer at the scene.

Local media also reported one hospital has declared it cannot take any more patients and is appealing for blood donations.

The cause of the blast, which happened just after 6pm local time (3pm GMT), was not immediately clear.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab has called for a day of mourning on Wednesday.

Sky News' Middle East editor Zein Ja'far, who was in downtown Beirut at the time of the explosion on Tuesday afternoon, said the "huge explosion" caused windows to "cave in".

"It tore apart the facade of the building we're in, and once the dust settled we managed to get ourselves and others in this block outside," he said.

"It was really quite a worrying sight.

"The sounds of sirens of the fire brigade, ambulances, the police and also the military has been pretty incessant for the last 45 minutes and a huge number of emergency services and security forces are rushing to that area now.

"A lot of very dazed, very bloodied people are walking around trying to gather their bearings."

One local, named Fady Roumieh, was stood in a car park of a shopping centre around 2km (1.2 miles) east of the blast.

He said: "[It was] like a nuclear bomb. The damage is so widespread and severe all over the city.

"Some buildings as far as 2km are partially collapsed. It's like a war zone. The damage is extreme. Not one glass window intact."

As night fell, a fire still blazed in the port district and ambulance sirens sounded across the city.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the UK is "ready to offer help and support" to those affected.

Israel's foreign minister said the country had "nothing to do with the incident" and its defence force added humanitarian and medical assistance is being offered as "this is the time to transcend conflict".

The explosion comes as Lebanon experiences its worst economic and financial crisis in decades.

It also comes amid rising tensions between Israel and the militant Hezbollah group along Lebanon's southern border.

...yeah it was unacceptable and I’m sure that those responsible will face ‘the maximum punishment’ as he’s said ...but it won’t change the dead and it won’t change the injured and it won’t change the destruction that needs to be rebuilt/the homeless etc...and that’s where his focus very much needs to be...

On a side note....you know how they are saying over 50 lives lost, so many lives lost, big catastrophe and a day of mourning. How come when the uk has that many and it was actually many more at the time dying each day our government thought that amount of people dying was showing success and they eased the lockdown and sent us all back to work and said it will be ok to go back to school....on a side note obviously I dont want to take away from this tragedy

Trump says Beirut explosion was caused by a 'bomb of some kind'...

At a coronavirus briefing on Tuesday evening, President Trump said an explosion that rocked Beirut earlier in the day was caused by a “bomb of some kind.”

Officials in Lebanon had previously stated the blast came from a large quantity of explosive materials that were being held in a warehouse, but Trump, citing conversations with top U.S. military personnel, characterized the explosion as an “attack.”

“I’ve met with some of our great generals and they seem to feel that it was — this was not some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event — this was a — seems to be, according to them they would know better than I would — but they seem to think it was an attack,” Trump said. “It was a bomb of some kind.”

What sort of bomb is preceded by a large fire though? In all of the videos if it, you can see that the fire is quite significant, with what looks like several small "crackling" explosions, for a significant amount of time before the main blast. Doesn't really make sense. Unless they're saying it was an explosive device planted in the building, knowing that it would cause a massive secondary explosion.

Also why bomb an industrial area? As much damage as there was and loss of life it would have been much higher if the blast centre was a populated area? It was a warehouse...

bots
05-08-2020, 11:07 AM
all of Trump's defense team haven't found any evidence of it being an attack. I think it more likely that Trump misspoke and then tried to justify it

Ammonium nitrate becomes more volatile the more it breaks down over time..it should have all been disposed of when confiscated, so the question I would be asking is why wasnt it.

Was it being stored to use later in an attack of some sort?

Was it being stored to use later in an attack of some sort?Given that the country has been in economic turmoil for years, the most likely explanation is that it costs more to dispose of safely than it does to chuck it in a warehouse.

Of course, the cost of this will far exceed either.

Beirut: Riot police fire tear gas at protesters as anger grows over port explosion...

Tear gas has been fired in Beirut as people protesting against the government's handling of this week's explosion tried to reach the parliament building.

Riot police took action as about 5,000 people gathered in the central Martyrs' Square and attempted to break through a barrier.

"The people want the fall of the regime," protesters chanted, adding: "Leave, you are all killers."

Makeshift gallows and nooses have been set up.

Sky News correspondent Alex Rossi, who is there, said residents have been "enormously angry" since the explosion happened, adding: "People here want to - metaphorically at least - hang their political class."
