I wonder if it's related to flooding? There was a bit of debris on a few roads this morning, possible that something larger like a boulder has been washed onto the tracks/mini-landslide.

Related to the storms and rainfall last night then (it was absolutely crazy, I've never seen anything like it in the UK). I can't help but think that they should have been more cautious with running the trains though... the weather was so obviously extreme that landslides seemed to be not just possible but actually likely. Like I said above, a fair bit of minor land debris on the roads today and railways are even more prone to it.

Problems of the track near that area
The Extreme rain last night has effected much of the track
this train is reported as first early train
after 6AM.
And The River near that track has burst its banks.

Horrible news the poor driver and victim, he must have done all he could or this would've been a lot worse judging by past derailments and the speed of trains today.

but then another landslip started

Its a shame as the amount of Flooding in Scotland
the night before was a massive warning.
So far 3 dead

They need to Fly Drones
and check tracks before the trains start.
Ch4HDnews reported the Conductor also died

has changed the amount of workers that commute

Indeed... UserSince appears to have forgotten that (thankfully, in this case) many people are still working from home because of Covid. If that has been a normal pre-covid commuter train there would have been a lot more people on board.

not everyone can work from home though
someone responsible here i suggest take a look at maintenance records of this specific train, maintenance crew for those train-rails too, or look at weather stats like if the track was damaged due to a recent storm what occured before this incident

From reports so far it seems that they are carrying out a safety review of parts of the rail network that are at risk of the same thing happening. Part of the problem is that the rail network across the whole UK has some very old routes, being one of the earliest countries to have a rail network, and so there are stretches of track where if you were building one in modern times, you just wouldn't even build there.

Getting a Rail crane in there, to help.
[6.38am: Despite heavy rain overnight in the area,
the train left Aberdeen station as normal, bound for Glasgow Queen Street.
6.53am: The train calls at Stonehaven station as normal,
before departing and heading south.
Between 6.53am and 9.40am: After leaving Stonehaven,
the train continued south, before encountering a landslip, caused by torrential rain.
It began to return north to Stonehaven, initially remaining on the
southbound line before crossing at Carmont onto the northbound line.
It then hit a second landslip and derailed while returning to Stonehaven.]
