When two children go missing in a small German town, its sinful past is exposed along with the double lives and fractured relationships that exist among four families as they search for the kids. The mystery-drama series introduces an intricate puzzle filled with twists that includes a web of curious characters, all of whom have a connection to the town's troubled history -- whether they know it or not. The story includes supernatural elements that tie back to the same town in 1986. "Dark" represents the first German original series produced for Netflix.

Dubbed but I'm pretty sure you can turn back the original language and put on subtitles on Netflix

The dubbing is pretty good though, German looks a lot like English, if you know what I mean

...this was on my list of possible next watches...plus The Fall, has been a recommendation so I’ll try to get them both watched soon...as soon as I have enough focus...I’ve just got the dvd for the second season of Big Little Lies, so that will be the first in the list, though...

The Fall is very good too Ammi. Dark only has 3 Seasons in total with 8 episodes in each

Ammi

..I like shorter ones and I like the look of the synopsis, so I’ll definitely move it up the list...(I think...)...the Fall is about a serial killer, which I know is my thing as well ...but I’m just not really in serial killer vibe atm to have started to watch...Big Little Lies/season 2, I think, will have that touch of ‘lightness’ as well that I’m looking for...plus, they’re characters who I already know and love.....

I think the type of story that Dark is, it's one that needs to have had the whole story mapped out start to finish before they even started filming, it's one where if they decided to drag out the seasons if it got popular they would ruin the story. It feels well planned, everything links up perfectly

Ammi

...actually, I can watch the dvd any time so I might watch Dark first...okay, SOLD, I don’t even need it wrapped...

...isn’t it lovely when you watch stuff with your children or have both watched the same so that you discuss it and how you both see things...and it’s interesting from different age perspectives as well...?...to think he’s that age...(..already, what happened there...)...is just so lovely...that you’re both watching and discussing the same things .....

It's an excellent series but, without spoiling anything, the last season left me conflicted. I'm okay with how it ended but it did feel rushed. They really could have done with another season.

Do you think so? I actually really liked it, I found that it was good pay off from Seasons 1 & 2 to have a lot happen in all the episodes of the last season (plus Gavin gets bored of TV shows really quickly so it helped me out a bit too)

Even though it wasn't satisfying (but not in a bad way, if that makes sense) I liked that we saw that most of the characters simply don't exist in the real world because their existence is reliant on paradoxes and it took me a few minutes to realise where most of the cast was and just how many characters simply don't exist now.

If it was down to me, I'd have had the third series be based around Eva and her world and a shorter fourth season be based around undoing the knot. It felt like they were running out of episodes towards the end and, while I enjoyed it, the last but one episode gave me whiplash by how fast it went through the timeline, explaining everything

I think a lot of characters also got the short end of the stick too because there wasn't enough episodes to cover everything properly. A five or six episode season 4 would have been perfect, I think.

I've watched the first season and really enjoyed it, but am stalled on around episode 2 or 3 of the second season but should get back into it sometime soon. It strikes me as the sort of show that could get waaaaaay too convoluted and chasing its own tail.

I did have to do a bit of googling afterwards to get the proper view of the characters family tree's to see why they wouldn't exist I'll admit but i didn't mind that

I read a really interesting theory about the ending actually, not sure if you've read this one but it's basically that Martha and Jonas didn't have free will at the end and neither did Claudia, that this was what they were always supposed to do. The idea is that when Tannhaus makes his machine with the objective of preventing his son and families deaths that his machine found the solution and it worked, that it's solution was exactly what happened leading back to his family being saved by people that the machine, as such, created

That's an interesting theory, I like it although the thought of Martha and Jonas having no choice makes it more depressing. I like the concept but I think it makes me happier thinking that the resolution came because Martha and Jonas chose to make it happen.

I'm conflicted yet again

The theory reminds me a lot of an episode of Black Mirror about dating apps, actually.

We loved the first season be we watched it on release, and I think there was like 18 months between season 1 and 2... so by the time S2 rolled round and we watched the first ep, we had to stop half way through because we had no idea what was going on :joker:. Will need to watch it again now that the whole thing's out, and rewatch season 1 first.

Subbed over dubbed though always :nono:. The show has a very "German" feel to it, doesn't feel right to have them speaking anything other than German .

I get too distracted to read subtitles also my eye sight isn't fantastic either. I did think the dubbing worked well with German though because English looks similar to German when it's spoken, the voices suited the characters too i thought. It was much better than Money Heist but I actually found the bad dubbing added to the charm of that

(If I'm remembering it right) the starting year is meant to be modern times (2019 - actually a couple of years in the future when the series was first released)?

I know it does still FEEL like it's old-fashioned-ish but I'm sure the dates are explicitly mentioned. Also the teenagers have smartphones etc.

Nooo... (spoilers below are for anyone who hasn't watched, not for Ammi who is just confused and should know these parts :p )

Mikkel (the son of Ulrich) is from 2019 and got stuck in 1986. It's Ulrich's younger brother, Mads, who went missing in 1986 (and whose body turned up in 2019)

I hope you read the one that wasn't actually a spoiler and was causing confusion! I'll just post it since it's not a spoiler;

...thank you for that, TS...I hadn’t seen it being posted but I had realised...I’m finding some of it quite hard because it’s so atmospheric in that the screen is literally dark, too dark to see everything...so...

...is Ulrich dead, was that him in the car....?....I still don’t understand how Helge can still be alive, I mean that’s just not possible and he’s walking around with his injuries...Katherina, younger Katherina is pretty grim and a bully, which is what older Regina meant when she said to the children...‘that’s your real mother...’... in the woods when Alesandra has the gun and stopped her, Katherina was pretty awful to Regina and a complete bully...I’m just starting Season 2 now, when young Noah killed...(not sure of the name..)...with a pick axe....grim...
