I'd have thought it were obvious that a prerequisite of running a message board is a potential power to intervene when serious circumstances arise (for example, if members started conspiring to threaten/literally kill another member, it'd need to be proven for criminal prosecution)

You're wrong?? To reiterate....James stated that the facility is there for pms to be read but that he doesn't do so except in extreme circumstances and even then feels uncomfortable doing so. Slim Annie and I are correct in saying this. Annie has even quoted the post for you. Obviously if threatening or abusive texts are received then I would imagine people would be fine with Admin reading them. I would. I am also quite confident that otherwise my pms are exactly that. I'm not defensive about it because it really doesn't affect me. The simple reason being that I know I don't do stupid stuff that would require James to trawl through my pm's.

This is the crux of this particular issue for me. Let's say I accept that james did have to investigate and read Livia's pm's to get to the bottom of a serious allegation, why is the issue here with James, and not the person doing the crazy stuff who accidentally admitted doing what they were accused of, despite denying it forever?

We all post on here. Some people I get on well with, some not so much, but none of those people should ever have to fear me coming after them irl because of crap they might say to me on this forum, and neither should you or I.

Some people have made genuine friends here, they may wish you share personal infomation with those people. They may also wish to discuss personal matters over PM with the trust that those PMs cannot be read by others (as personal infomation). I don’t think that makes people crazy...

Shaun, Ammi and Annie would be the best choices.

Shaun's got the perspective to do it well, the only things that would hold him back is that he wouldn't want to do it and he wouldn't hold his tongue, I don't think.

Ammi has empathy in spades and always try to see things from all perspectives but I think she'd hate the act of moderating and infracting people.

Annie is probably the best option out of the three, I don't think she'd struggle with the downsides of moderating and I don't think she'd ever lose her temper.

I've always thought that I'd be best off at a maintenance sort of role on here, without having to deal with infractions/warnings... just tidying up, merging threads, stickying them, keeping the boards organised etc. I wouldn't trust myself with the disciplinary side of things because I'm emotional and impatient (and abrasive).
