View Full Version : Is it time to abolish the monarchy?
Kate!

What with Harry and Meghan choosing to disassociate themselves and Prince Andrew under investigation is it time to partially or completely abolish the monarchy system.
Are they a drain on Britain or are they still an asset?
Thoughts....

No, and anyone who thinks so needs abolishing.

Yes... people will still come here, they visit other countries who did away with royalty. Post covid yes they will just be a huge drain.

The current Queen has been a magnificent monarch and William and Kate will also be excellent

Yes but rarely do they exercise their powers. Queenie should have intervened over Covid when her government didn't know what the **** they were playing at.
They are just happy to sit on their arses and be pampered. Also there are way too many hangers on.

Agreed she's not head of state... she does nothing none of them have any role doing anything that benefits the country in any meaningful way.

Should have been scrapped decades ago, and there isn't even the "good for tourism!!" excuse for keeping them around any more since no one will be allowed to go anywhere ever again :joker:. The Queen is one thing - although we all just ignore the fact that she's married to a quite blatant white supremacist - but the second-tier Royals at this point are a gaggle of alcoholics and (allegedly, allegedly) paedophiles and the generation after that are just a bit sad and lost.
Put them out of their misery, they have a level of personal wealth that means they can carry on with the philanthropy (if they actually want to) anyway, and in a position of power (even fake power) all they do is reinforce the Oh So British idea that some folks are "born better". Fling tae fuque.

I'd hate to end up having a President.
No thanks.
I prefer how things are.
There are many decisions that politically have been bad over the decades.
I think if this Country abolished the Monarchy, it would be a decision deeply regretted.
Despite their faults, I still would always support retaining the Monarchy.
Some things can be and are special.
For me, our Monarchy is one such thing.

They’re the ultimate benefit scroungers, get rid
i have no respect for the royal family, however i have no respect for the government either so i'm not their audience. i think the royal family becomes less relevant every passing year so they will eventually just fade away from public view

I'm just trying to imagine someone like Boris Johnson being elected as President of the UK.
That in itself would throw me into the Monarchy camp.

It's just an illusion to mask the reality though, The monarch has no real power and will sign whatever needs to be signed... it's not like it offers any actual oversight. It's purely charade. It doesn't have to be either the current system or a US-style presidency, we could have more or less the exact system of government we have now (a party elected with a lead representative, not an elected president) without the pantomime of the Royal Family being involved. Although I personally would suggest that we don't want the exact system we have now either, and there should be a more radical overhaul of our democracy, which is barely fit for purpose.

same, but what our crown princess amalia is being paid by next year, 1.6 million a year
she gets that without doing anything, and crown princess of belgium goes into their military forces and refused that extra bit of money
what a difference you have with monarchs in other countries too

maybe an idea from William/Kate's children when they are little older again
to enlist them in either royal marine academy, or royal military academy

Most of them do a little stint in the armed forces, to be fair. Harry drove around in tanks etc. and I think William flew helicopters and played soggy biscuit.

can't see our crown princess Amalia go in army or navy at all LOL
i mean she is very much showing to be bit vain, fashion diva-ish with lots of taste for luxurious french brands :fan:
maybe only one who can see here doing army or navy, Princess Ariane but that is because i find her bit tomboyish, not too obsessed regarding latest fashion trends

Well yes, I agree we could.
However I'd still support the Monarchy.
The question on this thread doesn't ask about alternatives to a President however other than a Monarchy.
It asks about abolishing the Monarchy.
Option 1 abolish the Monarchy and have a President.
Option 2 keep only the Queen.
Option 3, leave all as it is.
Hence my opposition to a President, in answering the question.

I think its very niave to think they sit on their arses and get pampered...they do a lot behind the scenes. The Royal family..its history its pomp and ceremony doesnt get matched by any other country...they are a massive draw for Tourism.
As far as covid is concerned...this country or others have never dealt with anything like this before. Whoever was in power and had to make decisions would no doubt have made as many unfavoured decisions as Boris imo. Its very easy to sit there and critisise dealing with a crisis we have never had to deal with before.

It does.. The French had an extremely popular royal family...well until the revolution.
Not saying that should happen here
... Princess Eugenie is pregnant, if I could just pop that in here as a general Royal news thread....wishing her a healthy pregnancy.....
