View Full Version : Breonna Taylor killing: Officer facing criminal charges 6 months after shooting...
A police officer has been indicted on criminal charges following the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in March, which led to months of protests across the US.
Ms Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, was woken from her bed before being shot several times after police burst into her Kentucky apartment at night using a so-called "no knock" arrest warrant that did not require them to announce themselves.
Police typically use them in drug cases over concerns that evidence could be destroyed if they announce their arrival.
The warrant used, however, was connected to a suspect who did not live there, and no drugs were found inside the home.
The use of no-knock warrants has since been banned by Louisville's Metro Council.
Ms Taylor's death sparked months of protests in Louisville and across the US, with the demonstrations intensified by the high-profile killings of other unarmed African Americans by police, such as George Floyd in Minneapolis and Daniel Prude in Rochester, New York.

The fact he’s getting charged for firing bullets blind into her apartment and someone else’s, but not for murdering her when they shouldn’t have been there in the first place is the epitome of the American justice system for black people

6 months for murder that was premeditated, they went to that house knowing fair well the person they were looking for was in custody yet still went and shot and killed a innocent young woman for no reason

it was murder though, but as it is a police officer, a 6 months sentence
if it was a random individual, i am pretty sure it would be a longer sentence, but justice system is just a fail in even when cops commit crimes they get protected which is what they know so they can do this over and over again, since they won't receive harsh punishments anyway
and bad cops makes the police force look bad in general either (re: those 2 innocent policemen being shot, that one is on corrupt cops their hands)

I feel sorry for Breonna. This is all her boyfriends fault.
Of course the police office is going to be **** scared and ready to fire at anything that moves with the potential of that monster around.
It's not right but the police office was just trying to save his own life.

A lack of adequate justice seen to be done is what leads to vigilantism, I'm not condoning it but if you can't rely on the rule of law to be applied equally regardless of status or role in society then it will happen.
We are conditioned to demand retribution.

They left her to bleed out for 20 minutes before phoning anything in, they went to the wrong house, for the wrong person, somebody they already had in custody, they shot and killed an innocent woman, yet all they care about is that the cop wasn’t totally accurate with his bullets and her white neighbours property was damaged, it’s a complete shambles

Except a majority of black people now believe that OJ was guilty. OJ happened in a different time, without camera phones showing OJ stabbing her, and I would guess that conclusion is a result of their own daily interactions with police.

Because she wasn't shot in bed. She was standing out of sight of the cops, and was killed when they returned fire after her boyfriend shot at them.
Edit: to be clear, while it wasn't murder, it wasn't okay either. It was manslaughter. The cops shouldn't have fired blind. Return fire? Well duh. But in a way to take out their assailant, not firing elsewhere.

A police officer involved in the fatal shooting of black woman Breonna Taylor has sued her boyfriend for emotional distress, assault and battery.
Jonathan Mattingly was one of three officers who took part in a raid on Ms Taylor's home in Kentucky in March.
Boyfriend Kenneth Walker said he feared they were intruders and allegedly fired a shot injuring Mr Mattingly. Returning fire, the police killed Ms Taylor.
Mr Walker's lawyer condemned the civil lawsuit as "baseless".
Ms Taylor's death has been one of a number of incidents that have spurred protests in the US and around the world by the Black Lives Matter movement, amid wider calls for police reform.
The incident took place in March during a night-time drugs raid by police on an apartment in Louisville, Kentucky where Ms Taylor was staying with Mr Walker.
In an interview with police, Mr Walker said he believed at the time that Ms Taylor's ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, had broken in, according to the New York Times.
What does the latest lawsuit say?
In a statement, Mr Mattingly's lawyer alleged that his gunshot wound nearly killed him, and as a result he was "entitled to, and should, use the legal process to seek a remedy for the injury that Walker has caused".
Mr Mattingly is one of three Louisville Metropolitan Police officers involved in Ms Taylor's death. One officer has been indicted and fired from the police force. A grand jury was not given the opportunity to consider homicide charges against the men, according to an anonymous juror.
Mr Walker was initially arrested and charged with attempted murder, but the suit was later dropped. He is currently suing Louisville police and seeking immunity from prosecution under Kentucky's "Stand Your Ground" law.
The controversial legislation grants people the right to defend themselves, with lethal force if necessary, if they believe they are under the threat of bodily harm or death.
"If Kenny can be sued for defending himself, make no mistake, all lawful gun owners' rights are at risk. And that should scare everyone," his lawyer told the Louisville Courier Journal newspaper.
Why did officers storm the home?
On the night of the raid, police were executing a search warrant as part of a drugs investigation.
The warrant obtained by police included Ms Taylor's name and address. Authorities believed Mr Glover was involved in a drug ring and had used her apartment to hide narcotics.
No drugs were found at the property, though Jefferson County Prosecutor Thomas Wine said the search was cancelled after the shooting.

That cop has some balls, I'll give him that.
Of course the boyfriend should have been allowed to do what he thought was defending his home against an intruder, just like the cops should have returned fire.

Unfortunately the charges don't include the deserved manslaughter charge, the closest is unconstitutional use of force.
