Questions have to be raised about the search and how it was conducted, in view of recent events across the pond maybe the police have been instructed not to lay hands on suspects, looks like a very cursory search was carried out, how did they miss a gun? especially as he had ammunition

Can someone hide a gun up their rear? You get them small pistol type ones? Same way people smuggle drugs etc

Is he dead? The report I read was that he turned the gun on himself but survived.
Massive error not finding the firearm and terrible.for the sergeant and his family and also for the other officers present

...the weapon that wasn’t found in the search, though...the suspect was able to access while the booking sergeant was present..(...so presumably other officers as well...)..He was able to draw it and fire at the sergeant plus himself...so it wouldn’t sound as though it was hidden internally of his body...

Yet another example of ‘soft’ policing I wonder how many incidents like this have occurred in the countries with “ tougher policing “ ??

I thought police stations had those airport metal detectors?... schools have them :/ This is really tragic poor guy, there will be a review of search procedures now hopefully, or better still install equipment that takes the guesswork out of it.

They have the metal detectors at court but not in police stations and it’s usually a pat down at the scene and a proper search at the station.
Most concealments are in the groin area or bum area.

Somebody high up needs to lose their job and then get someone in to shake up the procedures— a get tough kinda person .
Things are gonna get an awful lot worse from now on .. you can sense the ‘unrest’ ..

...it’s really difficult to understand how the gun could have been overlooked somehow in searching him...but then he was still able to draw and shoot with his hands in handcuffs...it’s hard to try to imagine a whole situation with this...so very, very tragic, Matt Ratana’s family and loved ones facing their loss and grief in such a way......
...lots of questions and answers still to come but so much thought to his family...just tragic beyond words...

Especially given he was arrested for firearms offences and was being monitored by the terrorist guys
I was thinking that some heads should roll for this oversight but it could quite easily be down to him being searched by a couple of untrained or under-trained cops who will have to live with this forever

i'm trying to understand how someone who is handcuffed with their hands behind their back, is capable of then using a concealed gun to shoot an officer and then himself. It doesn't seem particularly feasible with multiple officers around him

I can see it if his hands were loosely cuffed in front and the gun was down his pants but how could he turn it on himself :suspect: There will be video footage which will be released in time I guess.

You can be hand cuffed from the front and behind it depends on how someone was arrested
If it was by force it will be from behind but if they don’t put up a struggle it will be by the front.
I’ve been arrested without having hand cuffs put on.

My cousin and I used to play Cops and Robbers all the time, with practice one can easily crouch down and "step" through cuffed hands so they're at the front.

Sorry didn’t read the report, I can’t see him being in hand cuffs to shoot the sergeant because you have at least one officer standing beside you at the booking in desk.

Like it's a given there have been failings... :/ They were following procedures like every station every day, so sick of the sanctimonious posturing following something like this. No support, just finger pointing. Pffft.

I think he'll get a whole life tariff if he doesn't get diminished responsibility. Dale Cregan got whole life when he killed the two officers in Manchester. I think the courts will come down hard on a cop killer

I do think he should feel the full force of the law no question.
However, it's hard not to make comparisons between the two threads in discussion at the moment one is murder as they intentionally shot someone ....and the other?
Croydon police shooting: CCTV 'shows events' of fatal shooting of police officer Matt Ratana by handcuffed suspect...
Four addresses are being searched by detectives investigating the fatal shooting of a police officer in a custody suite in London.
Metropolitan Police sergeant Matiu Ratana, 54, who was known as Matt, was shot in the early hours of Friday when a handcuffed gunman opened fire before turning the weapon on himself.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said a 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident at Croydon Custody Centre remains in a critical condition in hospital.
"Due to his state, we are not yet able to speak to him," he said during a news briefing at Scotland Yard.
He said the gun used had been recovered from the custody suite."We also have the CCTV from that custody suite, which shows the events," he said.
"And we have body-worn video of our police officers who were involved in the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the suspect.
"Our special investigators are carefully reviewing all of that footage, which will be considered alongside the accounts of the officers."
The four locations being searched are:
The custody centre where the shooting occurred
An area of London Road in Pollards Hill, south London, where the suspect was initially arrested
An address in Southbrook Road, Norbury
An address in Park Road, Banstead, Surrey
Enquiries at these locations include "rigorous forensic searches which are expected to take days to complete", police have said.
Sky News reporter Sadiya Chowdhury was told by a neighbour of the property raided in Norbury that police conducted a raid on Saturday morning and that they had been "coming and going all day".
The family had lived in the house "for a long time", the neighbour said, adding that the family was "alright" and had never been in trouble.
In Banstead, a neighbour said police raided a house in the early hours of Saturday morning, and some residents nearby reported hearing a loud bang.
One person said it sounded like a gunshot but others thought it was a bomb or explosion.
The property had been empty for "some time", according to another neighbour.
Sgt Ratana, who died in hospital, has been described as "big in stature, big in heart, friendly, capable, a lovely man and highly respected by his colleagues".
Friends say he was looking forward to imminent retirement, which he would have become eligible for in two months.
No police firearms were fired and the case is not being treated as terror-related.
A murder inquiry was launched by the Metropolitan Police, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog also began an investigation.
Prior to the shooting, the suspect had been arrested by regular officers following a stop and search, then handcuffed behind his back before being taken to the station in a police vehicle.
Sgt Ratana leaves behind a partner and adult son.

They have arrested a man who supplied that Gun.
As Ammi has posted
Suspect in killing of Croydon police officer named...
The suspect in the fatal shooting of a custody sergeant at Croydon police station on Friday is 23-year-old Louis de Zoysa, sources have told the Guardian.
He remains in hospital in a critical condition, and so cannot yet be questioned, the Metropolitan police said on Sunday, after the force’s chief commissioner, Cressida Dick, paid tribute to the fallen officer.
A second man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying the revolver used in the fatal incident, and is being held in a south London police station, the force added.
Speaking on National Police Memorial Day, Dick said it was “her sad duty” to confirm the death of Matiu (Matt) Ratana, 54, who had spent nearly 30 years working in the force as a uniformed officer in the capital.

No wonder they did not find his Gun (Antique Revolver)
it was under his arm.
They searched him
but failed to tap under his arms?

told the jury on Wednesday the defendant
had been suffering an autistic meltdown

"did not mean to or want to
kill Sergeant Ratana, or to cause him really serious harm".]
