Constantin Film has set in motion a new adaptation to add to the ever-expanding Resident Evil movie franchise. Constantin and writer-director Johannes Roberts said Tuesday that have conceived an official origin story adaptation with faithful ties to Capcom’s classic survival horror games. This story is set in 1998 on a fateful night in Raccoon City.

Starring in the roles of the iconic game characters will be Maze Runner‘s Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield alongside Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin.

“With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences, said Roberts, the filmmaker behind shark thriller 47 Meters Down and its sequel.

Franchise producer Robert Kulzer will produce again on behalf of Constantin with James Harris from Tea Shop Productions and Hartley Gorenstein.

Said Kulzer, “After a dozen games, six live-action movies and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City.

Sounds awesome! Good cast too!

Tom Hopper just can't escape the Umbrellas...

I hope its better than the original movies. Interesting that we're getting Resident Evil 8, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness series, Resident Evil live action series and a new Resident Evil movie so close together xD

Sounds cool.

And almost definitely will be better than the Milla Jovovich ones.

Neal McDonough definitely a name we see a lot these days

not that i'm against that, he's a great actor

i liked him on Arrowverse + Legends of Tomorrow as Damian Dahrk, but also his role on The 100 was fab too

i kinda know he was in the ''Chun Li'' movie too as main villain, idk if i have title correct

I've seen a lot of people have a meltdown about the racebending of Jill and it's just embarrassing, typical racist gamer bull****.

Funnily enough it's Claire's casting I'm a bit iffy on :joker:. Leon's also, not so much a race thing as the floppy mousy blonde parting being iconic and I'm not sure how they're going to get that; he's very dark-haired.

Most of the cast looks decent though. Honestly the whole thing could go either way but I'm happy for any live-action adaptation that sticks closer to the actual lore than the mess we've had before.

I actually really like Kaya as Claire, tbh. I think it's a good fit.

I saw someone do a mockup poster yesterday of the actors as their characters and Leon's actor looked quite spot on. I think he'll still have the hairstyle with blonde touches, I think. The outrage about Jill is particularly racist though as the actress (Who played Ghost in Ant-Man 2, for reference), actually looks a lot like Jill, stick her in a shorter haircut and Jill's costume and she'd look a lot like her.

My hopes aren't too high since the best video game films (Mortal Kombat & Silent Hill) were still only decent at best, but I am intrigued to see how they'll handle doing both RE1 & 2. Will RE1 be covered in flashbacks? Will it be a pre-credit sequence? Will the film make it so that both stories take place concurrently? Who knows.

It would surely be quite difficult to adapt it for both to take place concurrently, since Claire's whole reason for being in Racoon City is to find Chris who has gone AWOL after the mansion incident. I do enjoy that minor plot point that's never really addressed in Resi 2: that Claire has put herself in the middle of a zombie outbreak out of concern for her brother, who has actually ****ed off to Europe without bothing to tell his family :joker:.

But yeah anyway... they'd have to make some quite big alterations to the timeline to have Chris and Claire in Racoon City at the same time... Chris is supposed to be long gone before Claire comes to town.

If both stories are happening concurrently, I'd assume that they'll change it so that Claire is already based in Raccoon City rather than only going to the city to find her brother when he goes missing. She'll basically get caught up in the outbreak and will probably run into Leon and they'll end up at the police station to try to contact Chris in the mountains, that's my guess.
