In answer to the OP, I don't eat Avocado much anyway, only if I'm out somewhere and it comes in the dish, I don't think I've ever actually bought one (except in Guacamole)

...is that one source/one supplier in Kenya...I don’t eat avocado but I would always try to look at fair trading and sources with these things.../...I wouldn’t necessarily stop eating as such...

You have to admit that it seems a bit odd that you would find a year and a half old article about Meghan eating Avocado's to use to raise awareness about not eating them though? Surely posting the information about why they're a problem would be a better way to raise awareness? Or is that too much of an "in your face approach"?

I do like avocados, but I always remember the old doris trying to ripen them by sticking them in brown paper bags and putting them in the airing cupboard over night, so just seemed like too much hassle.

No you can read bit of that page

[The British owners of an avocado farm in Kenya that
supplies supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Lidl — and until
recently Marks & Spencer — are being sued over a string
of alleged human rights abuses.
Guards working for Kakuzi, a farming estate the size
of Manchester, are accused of extreme violence against
the local community in 79 claims.]

[The allegations, dating from 2009 to January this year,
include battering a 28-year-old man to death
for allegedly stealing avocados, the rapes of 10 women,
and attacks on villagers walking on paths through Kakuzi land.
Former employees of Kakuzi are among the claimants.]

Ah thanks, Arista, that's a much clearer article about what the problems are. I think Ammi asked a good question earlier though, is it just this particular region or is it a problem everywhere?

Why dont you air your opinion on the subject....

These atrocities have been going on for a long time, and are still going on so posting old stories about the subject highlights that fact.

The original post also highlights that some people will still eat avocados no matter what.. therefore it's very relevent to the ops question.

...I guess it would be the same with meat eaters though as well...and some atrocious things in that industry...would meat eaters stop eating meat completely or would they always source carefully...

I don’t eat Avocados they don’t look particularly appetising to me to begin with. I just don’t get why that particular article had to highlight the fact that Megan (or even if it were to be any other celebrity) eats them is all.

The meat industry isn't the most ethical is it?

With those whose business is the production of goods there will be good and bad. We as consumers have choices, pay more get a more sustainable product. If we all weren't clamouring for fast food and cheap produce there wouldn't be as bigger market for these exploitative practices. Name an industry that doesn't have a seedy underbelly.

who said it was?

the point I made was that even going vegan is not a cure all for protecting the planet, we need to be conscious of where and how products are produced, slapping a vegan tag on it is not good enough
