The teenager had posted a grisly video of the
severed head on social media before being
shot dead by police, AP reported.

A teacher has been beheaded in a suburb north-west of the French capital Paris, reports say, with the attacker shot dead by police.
The victim in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine was a teacher who is said to have shown caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to his students.
The anti-terrorism prosecutor has been called in to lead an investigation into the attack.
The incident occurred at about 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT) near a school.
French President Emmanuel Macron is to visit Conflans-Sainte-Honorine later on Friday evening.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, travelling to Morocco, is returning urgently to Paris.
France's AFP news agency, quoting police and prosecutors, said the victim had been decapitated.
What do we know of the attack?
A man wielding a large knife is reported to have attacked the teacher in a street, cutting off his head. The attacker then ran off, but local police alerted by the public were quickly at the scene in the nearby area of Éragny.

A history teacher has died after being stabbed and “decapitated” in the street in a suspected terror attack near Paris, according to police.
The victim is believed to have shown his students caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad during a lesson earlier this month.
France's anti-terrorism prosecutor is investigating the incident in the town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, around 25km north west of the capital.
The attacker was shot dead by police about 600 metres away from the scene of the stabbing, close to the town of Eragny. He was armed with a knife and an airsoft gun, police said.
A police source also told the Reuters news agency that witnesses heard the attacker shout Allah Akbar, or God is Great.
France’s education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said the “despicable assassination” was an attack on the French nation.

Might sound daft but like many places have defibrillators I'm wondering if there couldn't be in schools and such emergency tasers for terrorist attacks?
It might saved this guys life, who knows..

Unfortunately it's pretty hard to change the way a religion is being followed.

We don't have the full details yet and it sounds confusing from what we see here in France. Regardless of the context, it's heinous and horrible for a person to be killed because they were teaching free speech, and specifically regarding the cartoons of Prophet Muhammed that led to both of the attacks in Paris in 2015. Horrible horrible horrible.

I wonder how they found out he talked about those caricatures? Was it a student of his that killed him?
....you just can’t in the most dark of imaginings, think of his family’s world atm and what they’re feeling....the person who did this evil thing, their death was swift with a bullet../bullets...but the images this man’s death will fill his loved ones forever...’in the name of any God’..?....No...

Purge of what people?
France teacher had received 'days of threats' before his brutal killing...
Samuel Paty, a father, had taken a class about freedom of expression earlier in the month, reports say.
He is said to have shown the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad while talking about the Charlie Hebdo case, and had reportedly advised Muslim students to leave the room if they thought they might be offended.
Some Muslim parents complained to the school and at least one reportedly took to social media to call for Mr Paty's sacking. French media report that Mr Paty had received a number of unspecified threats in the days after taking the class.
Flowers were being laid at the entrance to the College du Bois d'Aulne on Saturday.
Students were said to be distraught at the brutal killing of a well-liked teacher. One father wrote on Twitter that his daughter "is in pieces, terrorised by the violence of such an act. How will I explain to her the unthinkable?"
One of Mr Paty's former students, Martial, 16, said he had loved his job: "He really wanted to teach us things - sometimes we had debates".
The French presidency said a national tribute would be held for Mr Paty, and the hashtag #JeSuisSamuel (I am Samuel) began trending on social media, echoing the #JeSuisCharlie call for solidarity after the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Frankly those reactions show why lessons like that should be more compulsory.

...just going back to this...I’m reading that some of the children were asked to show who he was, to ‘identify him to the person who did this to him’...to ensure the ‘correct teacher’ was being slain...

...so much unimaginable...the hate involved in taking a life, in seeking someone out to take their life... but having to ask for them to be pointed out because it’s not known who they are...

The victim, Samuel Paty, was a 47-year-old teacher of history, geography, and civics at Collège Bois-d'Aulne for five years.[15] He was married, and the father of a child.

4 Pupils held over beheading
Police carried out some 40 raids on the homes of suspected radicals on Monday and more raids are expected.
Four school pupils who may have helped identify Mr Paty to his killer in exchange for payment have been detained, a judicial source told the AFP news agency on Monday.
This brings to a total of 15 the number of people taken into custody in the aftermath of the murder.
The killer's grandfather, parents and 17-year-old brother were detained shortly after the gruesome attack.
The father of a pupil who reportedly launched an online campaign against Mr Paty and a preacher described by French media as a radical Islamist were among six people arrested on Saturday. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused the two men of having issued a "fatwa" against the teacher.
