I absolutely love Avatar and the idea of filming 2, 3 & 4 at the same time ..

Sadly I’m not as enamoured with the news that Kate Winslet is involved ..

Honestly, it's a mystery why Disney are putting so much money into these sequels when people's reactions to the original outside of the technology was just 'meh'.

3D is old hat now, I really do think these films will end up bombing if they rely on the 3D gimmick again.

Probably because it became the biggest grossing box office film of all time. I don't think the sequels will make nearly as much though, it has been too long.

What’s this obsession with 3D ?

I’ve never seen anything in 3D certainly not Avatar ... even the massive Disney area of Avatar doesn’t have any 3D attractions that I recall ..

I just thought 3D was a failed idea years ago

No, it's pretty much the official view on things, you can't say 'well it's a matter' of opinion' to numbers. Just because you haven't heard of something before, doesn't make it less true.

Avatar pioneered 3D technology for cinemas that had not been seen before, lots of people paid a premium to see it in 3D and the word of mouth about how impressive the 3D was drove ticket sales to the extremes.

It's why, in the years that followed, every film tried to force lesser 3D versions into cinemas because the 3D tickets led to more profits but the phase died out pretty quickly, thankfully.

There's a reason why most people don't remember much about the film bar the technology.

It's not "awful" but it's just a mediocre sci-fi flick... and yeah, the main draw was the novelty of 3D which is old news now. FAR too long between the originals and sequels... half of the target audience probably haven't even heard of the original. To succeed, and if they really are filming three films at once, Avatar 2 needs to be exceptional and wow the critics. Otherwise the rest will absolutely bomb.

I thought it was a decent film although the 3D element made it miles better. The 3D fad died out because they started just making normal films that really didn't need 3D into 3D films and it's just became annoying

Disney must have given Avatar a real boost when they gave it it’s own area / attraction .

It was a new attraction in Disney World, do you expect it to not be popular? Also I believe the ride has some unique technology and animatronic stuff that makes it more unique. I think, just like the film, it's success is less to do with the Avatar property and more the experience of something new.

But they could have chosen just about any film / theme yet chose Avatar ...

Presumably the three new movies were influential in that decision...

The original took about 40 minutes to set the scene and introduce the main characters.. as soon as the the story moved into the Avatar world it was marvellous, I felt

The sequels will be all set in the avatar world which will be amazing imho

It is still the most popular attraction of all the Disney resorts worldwide after 5 years !!

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new Avatar 2 promo was viewed 148.6m times on its first day of release, which is more than the trailers for the recent Star Wars movies, The Incredibles 2 or Black Widow got.

Enjoy the Disney extravaganza !!

Avatar: The Way Of Water has made $1bn (£831m) at the global box office in just 14 days, becoming the fastest film to pass the milestone this year.

The long-delayed sequel has proved a hit with audiences despite wildly varying reviews.

It is only one of three films to surpass $1bn this year, after Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion.

However, director James Cameron has said his technologically innovative movie needs to make $2bn to break even.

The film picks up after the events of 2009's Avatar, which is the highest-grossing film of all time, with box office receipts of $2.97 billion (£2.47 billion).

Analysts say the new instalment is unlikely to beat that figure, as cinema attendances are still down, post-pandemic.

But based on current performance, the film is likely to overtake Top Gun: Maverick as the biggest film of 2022.

That news may come as a surprise to critics, some of whom panned The Way Of Water as a "lumbering, humourless damp squib of a movie" in which "nothing meaningful happens" and "the story is really pretty stupid".

Others were more enthusiastic, calling the film an "eye-popping, jaw-dropping spectacle" and a "fully immersive waking dream".

Zizu

Looks like there’s gonna be at least another THREE Avatar movies :)

:/:/;/:/:

Cameron somewhat roped himself into making another three Avatar films as the long-awaited sequel has dominated the box office since its premiere on December 16.

"I'm gonna have to do these other sequels," Cameron said earlier in January. "I know what I'm going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we're going to be okay."

In our 8/10 review of the sequel, IGN said: "Avatar: The Way of Water is a clear improvement on its predecessor and, though its story isn’t breaking new ground, its jaw-dropping visuals make this an irresistible return to Pandora."
