[BBC investigating as 'seriously unwell' Martin Bashir
'photographed after visiting takeaway'
Diana's brother says he was shown false
financial documents by Martin Bashir to gain
access to her before the Panorama interview.

The BBC says it will investigate after a photo emerged
reportedly showing journalist Martin Bashir
following an alleged visit to a takeaway
and wine shop, despite the corporation
saying he was too ill to respond to claims
made by Princess Diana's brother.
The Mail on Sunday published the image,
which it said was taken on Friday evening
outside the 57-year-old's north London home.
It comes amidst allegations made by the
late princess' sibling, Earl Spencer,
that he was shown false financial documents
by then-Panorama reporter Bashir to gain access
to her prior to her bombshell TV interview on
the current affairs programme in 1995.

In a statement issued on Sunday,
the corporation said: "The BBC has made clear it will
investigate the issues raised and that this
will be independent. We will set out the terms
of reference in due course.
We will do everything possible to get
to the bottom of this.

"Martin Bashir is signed off work by
his doctors as he is currently recovering from
quadruple heart bypass surgery and has
significant complications from
having contracted COVID-19 earlier in the year."]

I feel like if Diana was as compassionate as they say she was, she would have wanted this to be shelved until he's physically recovered. Tabloids taking photographs of someone who has recently had major surgery to "prove" that they're fine to enter a rag dispute does not sit well. Yuck.

Agreed.

There is no doubt in my mind that Diana wanted to do that interview. By that time she was very media savvy and knew exactly what she was saying would be sensationalised and I think she wanted it all out.

His methods may have been dodgy, but it doesn't change the content of the interview which was the main thing. Investigative journalists methods have always been dodgy and always will be.

Also, Spencer was proven over and over to be a lying, nasty twat, so whats the game now, there is clearly more to it than what is firmly in the past

Why has it took so long , and only now all this information is coming out .

Bashir knew exactly what he was doing, I've never liked him. He's corrupt and greedy. All he cares about is his big scoop . He gives journalism a bad name.

He probably twisted the knife with Diana behind the scenes.

Martin Bashir ‘groomed’ Diana over several months into doing the interview to get his ‘coup’ by playing on her vulnerabilities and undermining those she trusted so that she believed they were plotting against her. He told her a decision had been made that the Prince of Wales’s reputation was to be saved by attacking Diana and her family, that her aides were spying on her and being paid do so so, that Charles was in love with and having an affair with their children’s nanny, that her phones were being bugged, that there was a tracking device in her car, that she was being followed, that her closest girlfriends were leaking stories about her.
Horrifically, he even told her that her own son William had a watch with a recording device which he used to trace her whereabouts for his father.
He produced fake bank statements that apparently showed her closest aides had been in the pay of the security forces to ‘destroy her’.

Diana felt in danger and betrayed by everyone and eventually agreed to the interview. That led to the Queen insisting she and Charles divorce, it led to her RH title being removed and her Royal protection gone - and finally led to her dying in a Paris underpass. If it wasn’t for that interview she could still be alive today.
Bashir is a disgrace and should pay heavily for what he did.

Half of ep 2 was a rehash of ep 1, we saw the same footage 4 or 5 times over the two nights ...felt sorry for the forger, he was the only one who lost out in the sorry tale, but Diana knew what she was doing particularly after Charlie gave his interview to Dimbleby

Completely agree, by the time this interview was given Diana was fully media savvy, she knew the public adored her and exactly how to play it to garner sympathy and more love.. The Queen of Hearts line made me cringe then and still does now, it wasn't an off the cuff remark, it was a PR invention.

I don’t understand the witch-hunt particularly as the forged bank statements were already known about, I don’t recall it from the time myself but it made front page back then

I don't understand it either. Pretty distressing for William and Harry as well too to drag the interview and all the bitterness back up.

Yeah MJ was too trusting but I'm glad he had the smart idea to have his own camera man , so he must of known things could get manipulated but I'm guessing he didn't know it would be on such a high scale .It's very sad when he let Bashir into his life and home and look at how he got treated .

I haven't watched the princess Diana program yet ,not sure if I have the patience at the moment :bored: .

The awful Bashir betrayed and used both Diana and MJ for his own glorification.

The Diana 2 parter really is worth watching, its very interesting and informative.

Yeah I might eventually watch it , I just hate how even when Bashir is exposed yet again he seems to get away with it . Nobody in their right mind should ever trust him again or ever work with him again.

And It's annoying how it's took so long for all this to be revealed .

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54937006

The forged bank statements were used to gain the trust of Diana's brother to gain access to Diana....it was the way he fed Diana's paranoia to secure the interview which is the most disturbing aspect of the case.

If the princess was unaware of or untroubled by the forgeries, or the alleged deceit, it will help the BBC's defence: it says the original investigation was into whether the princess had been misled into giving the interview.
A note from her saying she hadn't would clearly weigh heavily. But the note does not address Earl Spencer's central allegation.

He alleges that the forged documents were part of a series of lies he was told by Bashir, lies that were meant to win his trust and thus gain access to Diana.
What we know of the rediscovered note from Diana doesn't address the serious allegations of journalistic misconduct Earl Spencer has made.
Nor does it help resolve the question of how much the BBC knew back in 1996 when it said the forgeries played no part in securing the interview.........

........Our correspondent Jonny Dymond said the notes appeared to record Bashir "spinning lie after lie about members of the Royal Family, and its staff, in an attempt, Earl Spencer says, to win his trust and that of his sister".
These claims, described by the Mail as "preposterous lies", include that Diana's private correspondence was being opened, her car tracked and phones tapped.

It was also claimed that her bodyguard was plotting against her and close friends were betraying her by leaking stories to the press.

The Princess of Wales died on 31 August 1997, aged 36, in a car crash in a Paris underpass.
