Dozens of staff at software giant Ubisoft’s Montreal office are allegedly being held hostage. A police operation is taking place in Montreal, Canada on Friday as armed officers have shown up in the area.

Local broadcaster CBC News reported that the incident is believed to have been connected to an armed robbery that happened close to the offices earlier on Friday.

TV helicopters showed people on the building’s roof, amid claims others are being held hostage inside.

Those staff members appear to have barricaded themselves on the roof of the building – Ubisoft’s global headquarters – with office furniture, amid reports staff still inside have also tried sealing themselves inside conference rooms.

Ubisoft employee Eric Pope said to French-Canadian news source TVA Nouvelles that he was on a call with employees when he had to ‘leave abruptly.’ Pope also pointed out seeing his team on the roof through the news, but he said some employees fled through the roof exit.

Another employee on Twitter said that the ‘team here is safe.’ Montreal police have requested that civilians stay clear of the area while they assess the situation. ‘There is an ongoing police operation at the corner of Saint-Laurent and St-Viateur,’ the police tweeted. ‘We ask people to avoid the area.’

Ubisoft is a successful video game developer, famous for making popular titles like Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed. Most of the company’s staff are said to still be working at home because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Oh my goodness, and the fact this is happening on the 5th anniversary of the Paris terror attacks and in the middle of a pandemic doesn't help any.

Soldier taking his legion save to the next level.

I lost one too many good people, Slim. And I thought... I don't know what I thought... I just.... I thought if I could get some of those programmers, someone from Ubi, they could restore a hidden autosave or something... bring back at least a couple of my guys.

I should never have turned on Permadeath.

If I don't win, the other person CHEATED and it was RIGGED. You know that Ammi. If I don't win ML2022 prepare for a long, thorough legal battle.
