Probably a bit premature given that Cyberpunk will soon be unleashed, but what has been your game of the year?

In a year where we've seen The Last of Us 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake, my pick for game of the year is.... Hades.

I hate roguelikes but I loved Hades a lot. I liked the setting, the story, the gameplay was addictive and the cycle of dying endlessly wasn't aggravating like it usually is in roguelike games. It's just a well put together game that has few downsides to it and the level of detail in how characters interact with each other is just quite amazing for a smaller budget game.

What's your pick and why?

I never get to play many because I can't afford to fork out £40+ more than four or five times a year but I think the following have to get mentions:

- Animal Crossing: New Horizons - I don't know if we'd have survived the first lockdown without it... such a cathartic and soothing game and the first one I've played from that franchise so I guess I had a lot more to fall in love with.
- Fall Guys - a very brief fad, sure, but it completely dominated for a month and was a lot of fun before the novelty wore off
- Among Us - see above, except it doesn't seem to be dying any time soon

I haven't played Ghost of Tsushima, Miles Morales, Cyberpunk or TLOU2 yet but I'd imagine they'll rank highly. 'Dreams' looked like a real highpoint for the year, too, in terms of creativity. Bugsnax looks a lot of fun, too, and I want to try Watch Dogs: Legion.

I don't play too many games but other 2020 releases I played were Genshin Impact (fun, but too weeby), Spellbreak (fun, but dead), Rogue Company (fun, but buggy and not really unique) and Marvel's Avengers (just... a boring Arkham/Spiderman clone with annoying characters)

I expect Cyberpunk to rank highly and I loved Hades also, but when all is boiled down, I think despite the many somewhat-valid criticisms, GOTY 2020 has to be TLOU2. It really represents the technical peak of PS4 and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute... and was drawn in for several hours most evenings - which is a major indicator for me (as someone with limited gaming time) - that feeling of being unable to put it down. There are only a handful of games that happens with. This gen, off the top of my head, that's Fallout 4, MGS5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Spider-Man, RDR2, Death Stranding and TLOU2. A tonne of other games I've absolutely loved, but those are the ones that I remember itching to get back to. Massive hopes for Cyberpunk but I don't want to get over-hyped :joker:
