View Full Version : Kay Burley - 60th Birthday Party rule break
Cherie

The Sky News presenter Kay Burley has apologised after she admitted to holding a 60th birthday party that broke Covid regulations on Saturday night.
Burley, who was facing an internal inquiry on Monday night over the incident, went to the Century Club in Soho, London, to mark the occasion in a group of 10 that included Sky colleagues Beth Rigby, Inzamam Rashid and Sam Washington.
The group sat at two tables, of six and four, before going on to a nearby restaurant, Folie. A smaller group of four then returned to Burley’s home to continue the celebrations.
All of the Sky staff are now facing a review of their conduct by their employer, which said it was “disappointed” by the incident.
On Monday evening, after the Guido Fawkes website published the story, Burley – who has held a series of politicians’ feet to the fire over lockdown rules this year – admitted to breaking tier 2 restrictions, tweeting: “I want to apologise to you all for an error of judgment. On Saturday night I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid-compliant restaurant. I am embarrassed to say that later in the evening I inadvertently broke the rules.
“I had been waiting for a taxi at 11pm to get home. Desperate for the loo, I briefly popped into another restaurant to spend a penny. I can only apologise.”
Burley is understood to have blamed the situation on misunderstandings in planning and organising the event. But she did not address why a group of four people, including Rashid and former Sky News royal correspondent and Huawei PR executive Paul Harrison, returned to her home after the dinner, a claim that is not believed to be in dispute. Other Sky News staff are understood to be irritated by details of the event.
Burley has been a stern interrogator of politicians who have been perceived as making excuses over lockdown breaches this year.
In May, she conducted a widely shared interview with cabinet minister Michael Gove about the Dominic Cummings affair, repeatedly asking him to clarify what the government advice would be for a member of the public “struggling with Covid-19 and you think you’ve got a problem with your eyesight”, in reference to Cummings’ explanation of his trip to Barnard Castle.
She also interviewed the health secretary, Matt Hancock, after Prof Neil Ferguson was forced to resign as a government adviser and asked: “What did you think when you read it? Did you bang your head on the desk?”
A Sky News spokesperson said: “We place the highest importance on complying with the government guidelines on Covid, and we expect all our people to comply.
“We were disappointed to learn that a small number of Sky News staff may have engaged in activity that breached the guidelines. Although this took place at a social event in personal time, we expect all our people to follow the rules that are in place for everyone. An internal process is under way to review the conduct of the people involved.”

tbh my country's justice minister also broke the rules by not cancelling his wedding (which had more than 100 guests) and he wasn't sacked either, even more so he got defended by our PM Rutte whom believed his excuse to be genuine enough

True, I firmly believe this is why the public were behinx the 1st lockdown but not the 2nd... when Cummings and others broke lock down it ruined the feeling we were all in it together. And there were different rules for some.
That was the nail in the coffin for the government expecting compliance after that.

As Sky New’s internal investigation causes angst inside the Osterley campus, a Sky mole gets in contact with Guido to add fuel to the fire; pointing out that not only did Kay’s birthday bash break Tier 2 laws, the broadcaster’s North of England correspondent Inzamam Rashid had to travel down from his Manchester home to attend. A 206 mile journey which would was not by any means essential. Ironically, Inzamam in English means ‘to get together with friends’…

Sue them for her breaking the law? How dumb.
She'll have a clause in her contract about bringing the show/channel into disrepute by how she conducts herself in public.

Really what would you be suing them for ? your own idiocy ~ totally ridiculous , she'll never get taken seriously again ~ hope she enjoyed her party ~ was it worth it ? wrecked your own career. Bye Kay.

SkyNewsHD Breakfast now
Now Kay Burley bit in the corner of the screen
shoved in the Cupboard
Latest snippets
Some of Kay Burley's colleagues at Sky News are said to be angry at the perceived leniency of punishment against the presenter after she was taken off air for six months for breaching Covid rules during her 60th birthday party.
One industry source described the outcome following Saturday night's event in London as a 'mild rebuke', while bosses refused to comment on reports that the trio would remain on full pay while she is off-screen.
Kay Burley will be off air for six months after breaching coronavirus rules with her 60th birthday celebrations
Colleagues Beth Rigby and Inzamam Rashid will be off air for three months after Saturday's party in London
Presenter Samantha Washington also attended the party but she is expected to be back on air next week
Miss Burley says she is 'sorry' and 'made a big mistake', while Miss Rigby says it was 'wrong' of her to attend
All three Sky News journalists will be on full pay during their time off air, according to unconfirmed reports

She’s effectively lost her only ‘trump’ card in that she asked embarrassing/ awkward questions that most people wouldn’t dare ask or she’d just be persistent in her attack if she knew they’d done something wrong .. she just doesn’t have that at her disposal now

I don’t get the ‘but Dom’ argument here either, her job is to hold the government and opposition to account, she is now voiceless and if she does return will have to couch her words carefully as she has left herself in a precarious position, that some people are going yay Kay is a bit of a strange view

We love junior colleagues :clap1:
The idea that she had 'no idea' she was breaking rules, and so many stupid people on FB kept going on about her being in a 'covid secure' restaurant and that no rules were broken as she just had to pee :hee:
T WAS an opportunity for revenge on an over-mighty colleague that proved just too good to ignore. When a group of resentful junior production staff at Sky News heard star presenter Kay Burley boast about plans for 60th birthday celebrations which would break strict lockdown rules, they didn’t hesitate to pounce – and set in motion a chain of events that would lead to her being banished from the air for six months, her reputation severely tarnished.
As the £600,000-a-year presenter yesterday started an African safari holiday, away from the British spotlight, The Mail on Sunday can reveal the full story of how Burley was the unwitting architect of her own downfall and how she was ambushed in what has been described as the ‘perfect inside-job coup’.
The plot by colleagues – long disgruntled by her imperious ways – began when they overheard her talking in advance about last weekend’s night on the tiles, which culminated in her and three other Sky News journalists partying at her home in Knightsbridge, Central London.
They secretly recruited a paparazzi photographer to take pictures of Burley breaking lockdown rules and created an encrypted email account to leak the story to the media.
For years, Burley, who turns 60 on Thursday, has been the queen of Sky News, having been part of the team since the channel first broadcast in 1989. Hugely professional and respected by her bosses, she has, however, attracted envy among colleagues. Words such as ‘divisive’ and ‘untouchable’ are used about her – as they so often are about successful people.
And so it was that nine days ago, at Sky’s vast headquarters in Osterley, West London, that Burley was sharing her excitement about her plans to celebrate her birthday, leaving colleagues in no doubt that she would be dining inside a venue with people from outside her own household.
She was overheard explaining that she would be visiting the Century members-only club, a celebrity haunt near Piccadilly Circus, with a group bigger than six. ‘It was a case of boom, this could really bring her down,’ says a source. ‘They thought, “If she gets caught, that would be the end for her.” ’
BURLEY named certain people she had invited, including Beth Rigby, Sky News’s political editor and Burley’s best friend since joining the channel from The Times in 2016. The plotters acted swiftly. Just over 24 hours later, photographers from the top celebrity paparazzi agency Eroteme were in place outside the club, waiting for Burley and her chums.

What's not to get?..there is an obvious comparison.
His job was to enforce a government message and he failed, he rendered the whole covid restrictions during lock down requirements toothless.
He kept his position and that ended public confidence, nothing they proposed after that had any gravitas with the public.

However Kate Burley will find it extremely difficult to execute her tactics in her role after what she has done... unlike Cummings.

You are suggesting she can't hold the govt to account for her personal failings and I'm suggesting that the personal failing
(Durham trip) by Cummings by the same token made it almost impossible for the govt to hold the public to account for breaches of lock down rules.
She can't hold anyone to account now, which was all she ever did ... i can't see her able to do that type of interview ever again
...so some colleagues knew of the plans and put the media story it would bring above any public health/safety concerns by trying to prevent the gathering from happening by informing their employers...the whole thing is so distasteful, their actions as well...which seem quite reprehensible also...the prime concern would have been informing for public safety, surely...

The public should be able to think a little bit outside the box no? it's their jobs and businesses that are going, MPs will still have their job for another 4 years, so carry on saying I can do what I like because of Dom, it's not affecting him or his ilk , but it is affecting your life or if not yours per se, someone you know

Exactly that is the point Rusti, Cummings is not interviewing MPs or trying to get them on the back foot which is her reason for being on Sky
