...so far as I know, he was referred to as ‘the black one over there’...’black’ translates to ‘negru’ in Romanian...so he would have used that word...

Right OK, you would think a Champions league official like that would know better though, especially in the climate we're in at the moment

Wouldn't it be the standard thing though for an official to use the players number? They're printed pretty largely on their jerseys

You do realise that word is a Romanian word for a racist slur?

If he can't read the gigantic numbers, he probably shouldn't be a linesman

ridiculousWhy?
Personally, I think this was inevitable. It was just a matter of time before the players left the pitch forcing the game to be abandoned. After England's game in Bulgaria last year there was always going to be more incidents.

he is pitchside and if you have watched football from a touchline and their is a melee its difficult, the ref wanted an immediate response if that player is behind 3 players he cant see it.
To say that a young, pro linesman in a champions league game is a racist and is prepared to be racist is ridiculous imo
I feel sorry for him - poor guy must feel awful

I have watched plenty of games from the sidelines, in fact those games I watched were school boys leagues with my son so not professional games and even then I've never heard any of the referee's refer to any of the players by their skin colour. I haven't made any claims on whether I think the linesman is racist or not but what I have said is, as a professional in his game he should know better than to refer to players by the colour of their skin. Especially right now when racist issues in football is being addressed a lot.

They cant say 'The Chinese player' surely we can all see why that's not acceptable.

Officials cant even see a ball clearly going over their own heads when its out by 2 balls worth (west ham at weekend) so how anyone thinks they will be up to date with the latest woke language is a real stretch - especially from eastern europe

ridiculousAs a professional match officials he should be used to working with different ethnic backgrounds so I dont see an excuse.
I dont understand what you mean by 'woke language' surely you can see that he cant just refer to players by race. How would that look?

if he knew neither then how does he tell the ref who is to be sent off?
he may well have said the ginger chap, the small guy the big lad or the guy with the pony tail.
Lets face the truth, the guy in question was sent off in a crucial game and that was at the root of all the outrage....

thing is Mock we dont know very much about the incident because for some unknown reason the linesman has not been able to speak about it
as is usual for this period of history social media has already made up its mind based on the reaction of players who also did not know the full story and add in the racial hysteria that is playing out currently (based on video judgment and mob mentality) we have opinions based on nothing more than supposition.
Best to wait until actual facts emerge

I think the problem lies in the different standards that have to be met in various countries in Europe, personally I don't think the official meant to be racist but he didn't see the issue in pointing out the offending player by colour, if the offending player had been white and he referred to him as the white one I don't think there would have been any issue  My hairdresser is Romanian and the last time I had my hair cut she told me they had moved area and it was better as there were more white people there, I was like :umm2: but she didn't appear to realise that what she was saying was wrong and she has lived in the UK for a while :umm2: and that she felt she could just come out and say that, like she would probably have been sacked if I kicked up a fuss about it which I could easily have done, as it was the salon was closing so she is out of a job anyway.

No Cherie that isnt good enough. If someone says the black, the Indian, the Chinese then why not the N*gger, the P*ki, the ch*nk and when asked the person can simply say - Well, thats we call them where I come from'. Surely you see the problem.
After England players were abused in Bulgaria this issue was always going to come up again. Someone who works with different ethnic cultures has to be a a bit more aware of what they're saying

Also players cheat and lie all through the game, pretend to be tackled, beg refs to send players off, try to injure players when the ref isnt looking and in general do anything they can to gain an advantage. A player was sent off in a crucial game and all of a sudden this happens and we are all supposed to believe everything they say and do?
Lets wait for the facts and context

The players run round with names on the back of their shirt, in big bold writing and a number to identify who is who and yet the official still chose to use that term?
I’m glad the players chose to walk off.

I agree but it seems the issue is he called the player black which he is, and the translation can be misinterpreted, when we are in Spain and I am attempting to speak Spanish, I never use the Spanish word for black in case it come out wrong! I am sure Spaniards don’t even think about it

Sorry, no, that's ridiculous. Indian, Chinese and black are not offensive words. Let's not make out they're anywhere in the vicinity of the n and p words.
It wasn't appropriate for him to use the player's skin colour as an identifier in the circumstances but that doesn't mean someone being white, black, Chinese or Indian is an offensive descriptor. It's not.

With the way the Football climate is like at the moment I'd stay well away from race related descriptions of a player.
