View Full Version : Alf's top 40 countdown of the greatest footballers of all time.

Alf

I'm gonna do this soon, I just need to do a little bit more research. And it's not gonna be from all time as the title suggests, I'm gonna do it from 1950 to the present day. Pre war stuff is hard to judge, not as much information.

Something for the footie fans.

Ledley King number 1

Alf

Ledley King number 1I liked Ledley, great defender, very unlucky with injuries in his career. Could have been an England regular even with Ferdinand and Terry about.

This is a difficult list to compile.

Gonna be interesting to see what order you put the big four in - Messi, Pele, Maradona and Ronaldo. I'm curious to see where you put the other Ronaldo. He was the best pure striker I've ever seen. Also, Zidane, Pirlo, Van Basten, Baresi, Maldini, Shearer, Gascoine, Zlatan etc. These are among the best players I've ever seen. Its going to be interesting to see who is left out.

Diego is 1. The rest is up for debate.

Alf

I will settle the Messi vs Ronaldo debate, once and for all.

Alf
16-12-2020, 05:18 PM
I will be judging players what they did in their era's. What they won, how influential was they, their reputations/legends, their individual as well as team statistics and footage I've seen of them.

Ryan Giggs has to make it on that criteria. His name was not my mind when I think of top 40 of all time.

That means theres gonna be a load of Man Utd players. Ryan Giggs has to make it on that criteria. His name was not my mind when I think of top 40 of all time. Not necessarily so. While Giggs was a great player, he wasn't the most influencial player in the team, he was one of them, but not the most.

I don't know my list yet, but I can say with certainty that as good a player Giggs was, he won't make this list.

He scored with his head, blasted 'em from 20 yard or dink over the keeper. He scored all types of goals Surely he's in. Gullit has to be in too as one of the most complete players in any position. So interesting to see who you've left out.

I did consider him, but he didn't make the cut.He had more than a couple of years at the top. This was at the time when Berlusconi was President of Milan and the turnover of players was ridiculous. Do you remember they bought Jean Pierre Papin and he was European top scorer when they bought him and then they didnt play him. There was much speculation that Milan were buying players just so other teams couldnt get them. That Milan team was a dominant a team as I've ever seen and Gullit was a big part of that dominance. I'd even go as for as to possibly include Roberto Donadoni if I was to make a list like this cuz he too was incredible in that team.

Had English clubs not been banned from Europe at the time, that Milan team might not have been as successful. Up until the ban, English clubs were dominant in Europe and Liverpool still had a great team around the time of Milan's dominance. Those were great Liverpool teams in the 70's and early 80's but I dont remember great Liverpool teams in the early 90's, so no, I dont think many teams in history could have lived with that Milan team. They are possibly the best team I've ever seen. They were physical, their offside trap was so well orchestrated teams hardly got a shot on goal, and they even changed the rules to stop their offside trap, and up front that had two of the greatest of all time.

The player who also deserves mention was Ancelotti. Underrated player. And i I was to list the managers in the Premiership in terms of how good a player they were, only Lampard comes close to Ancelotti. Dont get me started on Guardiola being a great player. Guardiola was a good player not a great player.

Other than Gullit, the only player I would have who is not on your list is Andrea Pirlo. For me, as good a midfielder of this generation as Xavi or Iniesta. I think in a few years we'll appreciate how good a player he was.

Great list, Alf. Cheers for sharing it.

Mine would be in no order:

Milan 88-92
Man Utd 2008, better than 1999 IMO
Arsenal Invincibles - of course
Barca for the Pep years
Ajax 94 - team that produced Kluivert, Davids, Seedorf, both De Boer twins. great team put together by Louis Van Galle
Czech republic team of 2004 - remember that team with Milan Baros, the 6 foot 8 tree Jan Koller, Pavel Nedved - Fond memories of that team, very exciting team that didnt win anything.

I might have a think about this.

According to my kid....526 of Peles 1282 goals were from unofficial matches so shouldn't have counted in goal count.Totally true. It was something that was pushed for years but has now been roundly debunked. The 1000 goals were not in competitive matches, alot of friendlies and exhibition games.

The 1000 goals were not in competitive matches, alot of friendlies and exhibition games. In the early sixties, Santos toured Europe and played all the best European teams. Benfica at the time were the top European team, with Eusebio in their team. I believe Santos gave them a whooping in their own stadium, I'm not sure but I think Pele might of scored a hat trick.

I think your insistence on individual awards affected your judgement and ultimately the list. Michael Owen has a ballon d'or, so these things don't always indicate who the best players are. A good read though, Alfred.

A good read though, Alfred. That was one criteria I used, but also took other things into account. There's quite a few players in there than never won a Ballon D'or, Dalglish for one. Dalglish was in because he was the most influential player in the Liverpool dynasty of the late 70s early 80s, which was dominant in Europe. Most are there because they played influential roles in dominant teams. Some are in there for their performances at World cups, such as Garrincha. Some are there just for their freakish talent.

So, I have 50 players picked out for my all time Premier league players.

I just need to try and arrange them in order, then I'll get posting.

Note, just because Ronaldo finished second in this list, doesn't automatically mean he'll win the Premier league list. I will be judging solely on their Premier league careers, not from what they've done elsewhere or at international level.

James

A relief for us all.

Yeah, I better tell Niamh at this point, that no Irish player made the top 40. I did consider Paul Mcgrath and Roy Keane, but it wasn't to be.

I fully support the no Roy Keane decision,.

What about the goal machine McCoist? or maybe the greatest Scottish keeper ever, Goram? Stuart McCall was also a very good Rangers player.

Think he only had a couple of seasons, but he did have some great moments.

Davie Cooper was kind of before my time. Loads of people said had one of the best left-feet and could have played in any top-team. He didn't play in a great Rangers side for some of his career.

QAVHCvotIOk

Goram and Mccoist would be close to top-three favourite. McCall was good too.

I would come up with different placings in this now. Messi now has a World Cup winners medal and a South American championship winners medal since I did this. He would therefore have to be higher. I also think I did Maradona a disservice only having him at number 3. He was much better than that. How did I put him behind Cristiano Ronaldo? I must have still been on the pot at that time.
