It's a surname, I was watching a soccer match the other day and one of the players was called Cahill and it bothered me greatly how wrongly the commentator was pronouncing it

Gal-a-her, gh in the middle of a word like that in Irish makes the g silent and Gallagher is an Irish name :hee:

My Mum used to go mad when people used to say Galla- ger, or gallag-her instead of Galla- her.

...I’ve always pronounced it Galla-har because I’ve always done the silent g in names, like my dad did...I didn’t know it was any other way as a child...my mum adopted that way as well...
