View Full Version : SNP faces fresh claims high-ranking party figures conspired against Alex Salmond

[The SNP is facing fresh claims that senior
party figures conspired against its former
leader Alex Salmond.
One of its own MPs has told Sky News
that high-ranking members
of the party shared dozens
of messages about the former
first minister in a social media group chat,
calling themselves the "Vietnam" group.

In text exchanges before last year's
criminal trial of Mr Salmond,
which resulted in his acquittal,
it's claimed they discussed the reluctance
of an alleged victim to give evidence
and efforts they could take to give her encouragement.

The new claims are made by Kenny MacAskill,
the SNP MP for East Lothian and Scotland's
former justice secretary.

He has told Sky News that content
of the digital communications has long
been a subject of open discussion within
SNP circles, and he has backed calls for
Scotland's Crown Office to release
the text messages as written proof.
Of the unpublished messages,
Mr MacAskill told Sky News:
"There has been long-standing talk in SNP circles
about WhatsApp and text messages
and I've been in correspondence
with the Crown (office) about it.
There's a WhatsApp group that
was called the 'Vietnam' group that i
ncluded SNP staffers and even members of government."]

[Alex Salmond may pull out of Holyrood committee
hearing after evidence removed from
Scottish parliament website
The former first minister's lawyer says the removal
of evidence could have a "material bearing" on his
committee appearance.]

[Some 474 words appear to have been removed
from the former first minister's evidence,
which was published on Monday evening.
Mr McKie said he needed clarification in order
to "properly advise our client and make
further representations".
He added: "These could have a material bearing
on whether he is able to attend tomorrow."]

Her husbands evidence contradicted hers in the original trial, it would be nice to get to the truth, if she did conspire to have an innocent man imprisoned that would attract a jail sentence for her in itself I would have thought? and if she didn't let the evidence be heard so it can be put to bed

What is the reason for the suppression of evidence do you know?

I am not saying he is innocent or not innocent but I don't understand the conflicting accounts given by Nic and her hubby or why this is not being allowed to go foward?

I'm not saying there isn't also political-shenanigans... isn't there always... but it's been used by certain groups to paint this narrative of pawsy-Salmond as the victim (or even some sort of hero), his accusers as liars, etc. and it's pretty disgusting.

The whole thing is muddied with Unionist agenda, which makes the media reporting difficult to wade through, and Social Media ramblings pretty much worthless. In short, this is internal politics and has absolutely nothing to do with Scottish Independence - however it is being deliberately used as an anti-Independence vehicle by Unionists on both sides of the border, which makes it at this point a complete cluster**** of misinformation. I personally have no real idea what's gone on. What I've mentioned in this thread is all that I'm relatively sure of.

1) Salmond's poor-me-I'm-persecuted act is absolute nonsense, I very much believe the claims that he is a misogynist **** with wandering hands.

2) The reporting is more about unrelated political agendas than the facts on either side.

 Probably. They all are. I'd still rather be under a corrupt SNP in Edinburgh making Scotland-centric decisions than a corrupt Tory government in Westminster ****ing over everywhere other than London & The South.

Of course ideally, none of them would be corrupt, but that's dreaming the impossible dream I sadly suspect.

To clear up what's gone on there needs to be transparency and Nicola has done everything she can to subvert that. I've never liked Salmond, i've never liked Nicola and each is playing games right now and it's not a good look for either of them. If unionists take advantage of their mess, why shouldn't they. The SNP have been quick as lighting to stick the boot in when they saw the slightest opportunity

Because it’s banal tit-for-tat politics... it has literally nothing to do with the independence debate. As I’ve said multiple times recently, I’m against the rush for independence currently as I think the Brexit situation is already too volatile. I’m pro-devomax which isn’t even an SNP stance. But it being used to get London-centric Tory unionists a foothold would be a disaster for Scotland.

More QSalmond from the Daily Mail. I had once hoped that 2021 would shake off the Trump-era media and politics... apparently, not yet. That article refers to Scotland as a "banana republic" and "one-party state" :joker:... I can't decide if it's genuine stupidity or just being disingenuous? Do they know what a one-party state is? Hint: It's not a state where the other parties just legitimately fail miserably to secure votes because no one wants to vote for them .

The idea that there's some sort of elaborate cover-up to frame a 100% innocent Salmond for political gain is just more conspiracy theory junk, straight out of the same playbook as the US "ELeCtiOn FrAuD". I find it somewhat amusing that English politics/press is now all aboard the "poor Salmond" train... it's not long since they were asking if Salmond was "a de-facto Russian agent". And that at least had legs as a theory, given that it's only a few years since he was fannying around on Kremlin-sponsored television.

I have some major suspicions... his entire life was about independence back when there were no whispers of Brexit etc... then when he was out there were those bizarre ties with Russia... and now post-Brexit he's resurfaced in a "political scandal" that will, at the very least, risk completely derailing any talks of indy-refs? His "life's work"? I find it highly suspicious especially with the timing... one might almost suspect that Scottish Indy was useful to certain parties as a destabilizing effect when the UK was an EU member, but those parties would prefer the union to remain in place now that the UK and EU have separated. That's veering into Q territory though :joker:

She came across, strong, determined and in my view convincing too, in the exchanges yesterday at this inquiry.

I had to cringe at the questioning from Labours Jackie Baillie.
Unbelievable.
Of course Nicola Sturgeon had wiped the floor with her while she was acting leader of Labour.
When she was pressing in a supportive way, the Salmond side of events on this in a Holyrood session.

When Nicola Sturgeon fired back with, something like, 'she doesn't know when Jackie Baillie had become the spokesperson for Alex Salmond considering when HE was First Minister, Jackie Baillie never believed a word he said in Holyrood'.

I like that Nicola Sturgeon will admit she could have made mistakes and freely without any pressure apologises if she has.

They're the kind of politicians needed.
So I hope this inquiry ends this Salmond attempt to, what I feel, ( just my view), scupper the success of someone who is likely going to be far more successful than he ever was.
Re the Party and Country.

He was found not guilty of the charges brought to him.
Any false allegations proven so in court is a good thing.
So in that, I was pleased for him.

HOWEVER, he doesn't appear to have gone about things before his trial in the best of ways.
Nor has he since it, again just my view.
