Myanmar military stages a coup: Elected leader
Aung San Suu Kyi is detained as her party
calls for protests and warns that the
country is headed towards a 'dictatorship'
Aung San Suu Kyi, the de-facto leader
of Myanmar, has been arrested along
with the country's president
Arrests were carried out by the military
early Monday as generals staged a
coup against the government
Comes after Suu Kyi's party won last year's
election by a landslide,
leading to fears among military leaders
that she would try to reform the
constitution to remove their grip on power
Military leaders struck just hours before
the new government was sworn in to office,
alleging voter fraud]

I had a lot of support for Aung San Suu Kyi when she was under house arrest for years. However, I have watched her preside over the genocide of the Rohingya Muslims and now I'm thinking.... maybe this is the universe punching her ticket.

Yes many are saying the same, as you.

What was done to the Rohingyas was beyond forgiveness so I don't have an ounce of sympathy for her, but I do feel for the people of Myanmar for their right to choose being stripped away from them.

Military and government should be two separate things for a reason. I don't think I know of a single military takeover that has led to good things for the people. I can only think of abuses of power.

the whole country is a mess. if she speaks out too loudly, she gets arrested, if she doesn't speak out loudly enough, the world condemns her. I have no idea where her true sympathies are, i'm not sure anyone does. All we can say is the people that have the most to complain about are the Rohingya Muslims and they wont get any better treatment any time soon

I’ve been to Burma. It’s a lovely country. Watching the sunrise over the Misty lands of Bagan surrounded by 1000s of temples is something rather special.

[2024 Feb 1 (Reuters) - Myanmar's detained
former leader and democracy icon
Aung San Suu Kyi is in good spirits
in solitary confinement "even if her health is not
as good as it was in the past",
her son was quoted on Thursday as saying.

Kim Aris said he'd received a photograph
of a hand-written letter via the
British Foreign Office from his mother,
who has been detained by the
Myanmar military since it overthrew her
government in a 2021 coup.

Aris reiterated calls for her release as
Thursday marked the third anniversary
of the coup that triggered a vicious cycle
of violence and economic strife in
the Southeast Asian country.]

Honestly some peoples just can't be trusted to have their own countries.
Bring back the British Empire tbh.
