Paris Hilton has been released from prison after serving just half of her sentence.
All smiles on her way homeThe socialite smiled and waved at the massed ranks of waiting media as she emerged from jail.
She shook hands with well-wishers, some of whom shouted "God bless you Paris", before running to her mum Kathy with arms open.
The family's SUV then sped off, pursued by media helicopters and reporters in cars.
Hilton served 23 days of her 45-day sentence for violating probation from a drink-driving arrest last year.
She was given 22 days' credit for good behaviour and because of overcrowding at her women-only prison. She was released shortly after midnight local time (8am BST).
Earlier this month, there was an outcry when Hilton was released three days into her sentence because of an unspecified medical problem.
The 26-year-old was tagged and placed under house arrest.
But the decision was reversed by a judge and she was ordered back to jail, screaming "it's not right" as she was led away.
In a phone call from prison, she told TV personality Barbara Walters: "I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute.
"It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me."
The Federal Aviation Administration has promised to keep a close watch on the paparazzi helicopters likely to track her every move after her release from jail in Lynwood, California.
Hilton, who has starred in her own reality TV show The Simple Life, is set to tell the world about her time behind bars.
She has reportedly shunned payment and will sit down with journalist Larry King for his talk show later this week.
