Paris Hilton has been released from prison after serving just half of her sentence.

All smiles on her way homeThe socialite smiled and waved at the massed ranks of waiting media as she emerged from jail.

She shook hands with well-wishers, some of whom shouted "God bless you Paris", before running to her mum Kathy with arms open.

The family's SUV then sped off, pursued by media helicopters and reporters in cars.

Hilton served 23 days of her 45-day sentence for violating probation from a drink-driving arrest last year.

She was given 22 days' credit for good behaviour and because of overcrowding at her women-only prison. She was released shortly after midnight local time (8am BST).

Earlier this month, there was an outcry when Hilton was released three days into her sentence because of an unspecified medical problem.

The 26-year-old was tagged and placed under house arrest.

But the decision was reversed by a judge and she was ordered back to jail, screaming "it's not right" as she was led away.

In a phone call from prison, she told TV personality Barbara Walters: "I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute.

"It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me."

The Federal Aviation Administration has promised to keep a close watch on the paparazzi helicopters likely to track her every move after her release from jail in Lynwood, California.

Hilton, who has starred in her own reality TV show The Simple Life, is set to tell the world about her time behind bars.

She has reportedly shunned payment and will sit down with journalist Larry King for his talk show later this week.

Paris Hilton has been released from prison amid scenes more suited to a Big Brother style eviction.

Beaming with joy the 26-year-old jail bird strutted out of the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, to a cheering reception of hundreds of fans and the world's gathering media.

Swinging her hips on her catwalk of glory, a well-dressed Hilton, ran towards her family waiting in a blacked-out van, flanked by two prison guards.

Wearing her hair in a side plat, she waved and high-fived fans, who lined the exit route for a glimpse of the controversial star.

Hundreds of photographers scrambled to take a snap of her as she climbed in to her people carrier.

Paris was released after 23 days of a 45 sentence because of good behaviour.

Paris is expected to head home to celebrate in 'a quiet gathering of family and close friends.'

Her next public appearance will come tomorrow night when she is due to speak on CNN's chat show Larry King Live for an hour.

Earlier in a statement Hilton said: 'I am thrilled Larry King has asked me to appear on his program to discuss my experience in jail, what I have learned, how I have grown and anything else he wants to talk about.'

Her music is more of a crime than the one she commited.

Good job my karma is off or it'd be obliterated today.

Even though she was let out (twice) early, I now feel more respect for her.

I hope she has learn fromthis experience and uses it for good and doesnt go back to her selfish ways.

I am sure that prison has changed her for the better
